E. R. Dut- Faithful Unto Death THE CHARACTER AND DEATH OF THE FIRST MARTYR OF THE-CHRISTIAN CHURCH 6-7. By NEWMAIT CAMPBELIr "AND IN those days, when the, number the disciples was multiplied, there arose murmuring of the Grecians against the Hebrews, because their widows were neglected in the daily 6:1. Quoting: from the Rev.

Wilbur M. Smith to Select "Notes: "At this time there was only one assembly that we know of, and that was Jerusalem. In this church there were a number of widows whose support had to be undertaken by other Christians, and there were two types of Jewish the strict Palestinian Jews, speaking and reading Hebrew, and the Grecian speaking Greek and mingling witfr the Thto complaint disturbed the good and they decided to do sometirinff about it, and they asked: "Wherefore, brethren, look oat among seven men of honest report, fufl of Hory Ghost and dom, whom may appoint over tins boiineeft. But we wffl conttnuafly to prayer, and. to the- ministry of the pleated the whole mdtt- tade "and they chose Stephen, a man ftdl of faith and the Holy Ghoat, and others, they set before the and when they bod pray- dress.

He gives a masterly review of God's dealing's-with His people, Israel. Nothing 1 in this entire speech could be" denied by the Sanhedrin before which he stood. He begins with a discussion of God's covenant with Abraham, at the dawn of Israel's history, goes on with a history of the people's from Egypt, with which, we have no space to repeat." Nevertheless, forced to acknowledge the truth of Stephen's defense and his rebukes because of their unbelief and wickedness, and when he "Ye stifCnecked and lin- circumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the.Holy Ghost Which of the. prophets have not your fathers persecuted? and they hsv.e slain them before the coming of the Just One; of whom ye have been BOW the betrayera and "When they heard 'these things they were cut to the heart, and they gnashed on him with their teeth. "But he, being fuH of the Holy Ghost, looked up steadfastly Into heaven, and saw the glory of, God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God." "Then they cried out a loud voice, and stopped their ears, and ran upon him with one accord.

And cast him. out of the city, and stoned MEMORY VERSE fattkfnl death, and I witt give thee a crovm of ed, they laid their on 6:54, "And Stephen, foH of faith, and power, did great wonders and among the 6:8. "Then there aroee certain of the synagogue, which if called the synagogue of the libertines, and Cyreniana, and Alex- andrians, and of them of Cilicia and of Asia, disputing with Stephen. And they were not able -to resist the wisdom end the spirit with which he spoke. Then they suborned (to induce to commit perjury) men, which Bald, "We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses, and against pie, the elders, the scribes, and came upon him, and caught him, and brought him to the council.

And set up they stirred up the people, and the elders, and the scribes, and came upon him, and caught him, and brought him to the council. And up false witnesses, which said, man ceeseth not to speak blasphemous words against this holy place, and the Acti I quote again from Dr. Wilbur M. Smith's Peloubet's Select JTofaw: "Stephen does not begin hia defense by any reference to himself; in fact he never re- era to himself in ihe whole ad- Acts Stephen died calling upon God, and saying, "Lord Jesus, receive my spirit. And he kneeled down, and cried with a loud voice, "Lord, Jay not this sin to their And when, he had said this, he fell asleep." So died this Christ-like man whose only "sin," as -his enemies called it, was preaching and living a sinless life, full of good deeds, of preaching and heeling-.

Christ told us to "love our enemies, do good to them that hate you. Bless them that curse you, and pray for them, that despitefully use Luke 6:28. We read In our sometimes about someone who. has a grievance against another and takes a terrible revenge, even causing death, to this "enemy." Let us search our hearts to see if we hold vengeful thoughts against anyone, and kneel down and aak God for strength to turn our thoughts to blessings for that person. This, I think, is the important lesson to be Impressed on both small children and older ones in our classes, striving always to follow Christ's teaching.

We wiH thus be much happier ourselves; and become the type of people that the world today badlr. ton. 11 a.m. The Service. Sermon: "You Haven't Seen Anything Yet!" 2:30 p.m.
