Rescuers broke off steering: wheel to extricate him. Edward Christy, 31, suffered head injuries, a broken leg and possible back injury his auto and train collided. Driver Seriously Injured When Auto Rams Train Pinned in his automobile after it collided with a Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad Co. switch train, a 31- year-old Salt Lake man was seriously injured Sunday at 8:10 p.m.

Car Accident In Nevada Kills Utahn Special to The Tribune WENDOVER, NEV. A one-car accident 10 miles southwest of here Saturday night claimed the life of a Salt Lake City man and injured another. MELVIN C. Hartshorn, 50, 225 Lambert PI. (354 South), was killed instantly when the car he was driving overturned.

A passenger, identified as George St. Clair, Salt Lake City, was treated for minor injuries and released. According to Nevada authorities Mr. Hartshorn had started to turn the car around to return to Wendover when it struck a culvert and overturned, Mr. Hartshorn was born Nov.

10, 1908, in Springfield, to Charles and Minnie M. Smith Hartshorn. He married Edna Barrett Aug. 7, 1937, in Salt Lake City. He was a member of the Mason Tenders Union Local 79 and of the Moose Lodge.

His survivors' include his widow, Salt Lake City; three sisters, Mrs. Margaret Young, Bell, Mrs. George E. Grant, Bountiful, ar. Mrs.

Ann Williams. Salt Lake City; three brothers, Jack Hartshorn, Hollywood, Harry Hart, Woods Cross, Davis County, and Robert Hartshorn. Long Beach, Calif. The driver was Identified as Edward Christy 31, 427 Park St. (540 East).

He suffered a compound fracture of the left leg, head injury and possible back injury. He was reported in poor condition at Salt Lake General Hospital. He later was transferred to St. Mark's Hospital in improved condition. The crumpled steering wheel of Mr.

Christy's car pinned him inside and it was necessary to break the steering wheel off before he could be removed from the wreckage. The accident occurred at 6th South and 5th West. Everett Nielson, 39, 1237 W. llth North, brakeman on the train, said he was riding an empty coal car at the end of a short string of freight cars being pushed northward by a diesel switch engine.
