4D DES MOINES SUNDAY REGISTER October 11, 1987 it BIG TEtl, DIG EIGHT AP PHOTO Texas' 7 throwaways lead to Oklahoma rout Indiana stuns Ohio State by 31-10 JS3! li By The Associated Press COLUMBUS, OHIO Fullback Tom Polce scored two touchdowns in the second half Saturday as Indiana defeated No. 9 Ohio State for the first time in 36 years, 31-10. Indiana (4-1 overall, 2-0 in the Big Ten) had not beaten Ohio State since Oct. 20, 1951. Ohio State (3-1-1 and 1-1) had won the last 23 meetings since a scoreless tie in 1959 and had won the seven games preceding that for a 30-0-1 record.

With the score 10-10 in the third quarter, Tony Buford's 40-yard punt return gave the Hoosiers possession on the Ohio State 19 with 3 minutes 9 seconds remaining in the period. Four plays later, Polce scored from the 6-yard line to make it 16-10. Pete Stoy-anovich, who kicked a 44-yard field goal in the first half, added the extra point. Brian Dewitz then intercepted a Tom Tupa pass at the Indiana 28-yard line with 13:19 left in the game and returned it 18 yards. Dave Schnell finished a 54-yard, eight-play drive with an 8-yard touchdown pass to Ernie Jones to make it 24-10 with 8:47 left.

Schnell. who completed 15 of 23 passes for 200 yards, threw a 7-yard touchdown pass to Polce to complete the scoring with 1:05 remaining. Indiana outgained Ohio State, 405-264, rushing for 205 yards, 126 by Anthony Thompson. Thompson scored on a 3-yard touchdown run in the first half. Ohio State's Jaymes Bryant scored the Buckeyes' only touchdown on an 8-yard run in the first half.

Matt Frantz kicked a 51-yard field goal, tying the Ohio Stadium record, on the last play of the first half. Statistics DALLAS, TEXAS (AP) Top-ranked Oklahoma handed Texas its worst passing day in the Longhorns' 94-year football history on Ssturday. The unbeaten Sooners intercepted seven passes in rolling to a 44-9 victory in the annual intersectional grudge match between Red River rivals. The seven interceptions tied an Oklahoma record and surpassed by one the previous Texas record for aerial futility. The Longhorns had six passes intercepted in 1944 against Randolph Field and again in 1978 against Baylor.

"You can't throw interceptions," said Texas quarterback Brett Stafford, who served up five of the interceptions. Texas Coach David McWilliams agreed. "We came in wanting to fight and compete hard," McWilliams said, "and we did a good job of that. You have to play an error-free game to beat Oklahoma, and we didn't come close to doing that." Ricky Dixon and Derrick Crudup each had two interceptions for the Sooners. Oklahoma, 5-0 and off to its best start since 1978, put the Longhorns away with three third-period touchdowns after interceptions.

With Oklahoma leading only 13-6, Dixon returned an intercepted pass 50 yards to set up Jamelle Holieway's 44-yard touchdown pass to Carl Cab-biness. The Sooners struck again 76 seconds later on Lydell Carr's 32-yard scoring run after a Troy Johnson interception. Crudup's interception, a 21-yard run by Holieway and Patrick Collins' 4-yard scoring run put the Longhorns away with a 21-point quarter. Carr, who scored two touchdowns, said the Sooners were upset with themselves in the first half. "And we said we were going to have a second half with some points on the board," he said.

"We had a little huddle before the offense went onto the field," he said, rr -m. i Save now Crimpy Statistics Oklahoma First downs 18 Rushes-yards 43-392 Passing yards 76 Return yards 158 Passes 2-8-0 Punts 3-42 Fumbles-losl 3-1 Penalties-yards 7-64 Time of possession 31:14 SCORING Oklahoma 0 13 21 13 0 FG Clements Carr 7 run (Lashar kick) O-FG Lashar 44 0 FG Lashar 22 FG Clements 46 0 Cabbiness 44 pass from Holieway (Lashar kick) 0 Carr 32 run (Lashar kick) 0Collins 4 run FG Clements 36 FG Lashar 29 0 C. Texas (2-3) went into the game as a 30-point underdog, largest in the 82-year history of the series. But when Wayne Clements' 52-yard field goal late in the first period gave the Longhorns a 3-0 lead, the surprised Sooners trailed for the first time this year. But they soon got over their shock, charging 78 yards with Carr scoring on a 7-yard run. Holieway's 32-yard pass to tight end Keith Jackson on third down and 12 set up the score.

Holieway rushed for 70 yards on 15 carries to become the top career rusher among Oklahoma quarterbacks. He has 2,093 yards, surpassing Steve Davis' 2,059. Holieway left the game with a jammed shoulder, but he returned with less than a minute to play. Oklahoma built its first-half lead to 13-3 on field goals of 46 and 22 yards by R.D. Lashar against a stubborn Longhorn defense.

Texas trimmed it to 13-6 with 17 seconds left in the first half on a 46-yard field goal by Clements, a sophomore transfer from Tulane. The victory was the fifth straight for the unranked Gophers, their best start since 1960, when they won their first seven games on the way to a national championship. Foggie's feats offset Byron Sanders' 295 yards rushing, the most productive rushing performance in the Big Ten this season. His total was second on Northwestern's all-time list only to Mike Adamle's 316 yards in 1969 against Wisconsin.

Foggie completed a 28-yard flea-flicker touchdown pass to Jason Bruce in the first quarter and a 33-yard touchdown pass to Chris Gaiters in a 17-point third quarter. He capped his display with an 80-yard touchdown pass to Bruce early in the fourth quarter. Foggie's touchdown run came with less than 2 minutes remaining in the game to clinch the victory. 7 interceptions doom Michigan to 17-11 defeat By Tlx Associated Press EAST LANSING, MICH. Michigan State's defense had seven interceptions, four by safety John Miller, as the Spartans upset No. 12 Michigan, 17-11, in a Big Ten game Saturday. The last interception, by safety Todd Krumm, came with 26 seconds left as the Wolverines mounted a desperation effort from their own 20-yard line. It gave Michigan State its first home victory over its intrastate rivals since 1969.

The next-to-last interception of a Demetrius Brown pass, by safety Harlon Barnett, came on the Michigan State 10-yard line with 3 minutes 9 seconds left in the game and aborted a Michigan drive that had covered 40 yards in 10 plays. Lorenzo White rushed for 185 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Spartans. White's touchdowns came in the first half after Michigan took the opening kickoff and marched 66 yards in plays to take a 3-0 lead on a 31-yard Mike Gillette field goal. For his first score, White bulled his way through the line and headed for the end zone, carrying safety Doug Mallory the final few steps. The 6-yard run capped a nine-play, 76-yard drive and, with a John Langeloh kick, boosted the Spartnns to a 7-3 advantage at the end of the period.

Three of Miller's interceptions came in the second quarter, with the second leading to White's second touchdown, a 2-yarder around the left end that was good for a 14-3 halftime edge for the Spartans. Brown's seven interceptions set a school record. The previous single-game high for a Wolverines' quarterback was five, set in 1959 against Wisconsin by Stan Noskin. Purdue 9, Illinois 3 WEST LAFAYETTE, IND. Jonathan Briggs kicked three field goals, of 44, 23 and 37 yards, in the first half to give Fred Akers his first victory as a Big Ten coach.

James Medlock rushed for a career-high 131 yards for the Boilermakers. Purdue recovered eight of 10 Illini fumbles, including one at the Purdue 1-yard line in the third quarter. The eight lost fumbles tied a conference record. Ball State slips by Kent State, 24-23 MUNCIE, IND. (AP) Freshman tailback Bernie Parmalee rushed for 123 yards and two touchdowns to lead Ball State to a 24-23 victory over Kent State in the Mid-American Conference Saturday.

Clark scored on a 4-yard run in the second quarter and Drennan bounced a 43-yard field goal on top and over the crossbar in the second quarter. Clete Blakeman, making his first start of the season for Nebraska, hit tight end Tom Banderas on a 16-yard touchdown pass and Clark added a 22-yard scoring run in the third period. Kansas (1-4) scored its only points with a safety when Clint Normore blocked a Craig Schnitzler punt attempt out of Nebraska's end zone with 13 minutes 14 seconds left to play in the game.
