By ELIZABETH OWENS REGISTER STAFF WRITER The candidates for Iowa House District 69 pledge to remain positive. Whether that will better serve freshman representative Walt Tomenga or first-time candidate John Calhoun will be seen in the Nov. 7 election. House District 69 is the northern half of Polk County, including Alleman, Elkhart, Grimes, Johnston, Polk City and parts of Ankeny and northern Des Moines.

HOUSE DISTRICT 69 Tomenga, Calhoun wage upbeat campaigns Tuesday, October 17,2006 Page 5 Republican Tomenga, 59, of Johnston served as the vice-chairman of the State Government Committee and on the Commerce, Regulation and Labor Committee, the Education Committee, the Health and Human Resources Committee and Ways and Means in his first term. Tomenga said he kept his campaign promises of two years ago: that he would be thoughtful in deliberation, accessible to constituents and willing to explain his position and actions. "The only thing that's really mine is my word, and I kept my word," Tomenga said. Democrat Calhoun, 57, of Polk City said his background is strong as a community organizer and collaborator. He created the Siouxland Human Investment Partnership in 2000, a Woodbury County board that focuses on health, human services, education and public safety.

Although officially retired, Calhoun has served as president of Provident Consulting, since January 2005 and as managing partner of Iowa Grandparents, L.L.C., a Webbased business that provides child development information to grandparents. Tomenga is owner of Three Dimensional, a Des Moines consulting firm, and he previously held executive positions at Farm Bureau and Blue Shield. He also was an adjunct professor of strategic management at Drake University.

Tomenga said he was a bridge-builder in the legislature and his ability to keep his word was noticed. "I did that also in the legislature, which I think gave me the opportunity to establish some credibility that my word was my bond," Tomenga said. Tomenga said he contributed to fixing retirement programs for state workers and public service employees in Iowa by making sure it was financially supported, and was instrumental in passing legislation for increased teacher salaries and for increased money to community colleges. Calhoun said if elected, he will push for a 6 percent increase in the payments state officials give to public schools. The legislature granted a 4 percent increase this year.
