Baylor dipped deep into its third string as it unleashed fresh runners on every series of downs. Seven different runners carried the ball with Ralph Stockemer scoring from 40 yards out and junior college transfer Randy Rutledge dashing 7 yards for another touchdown. Saturday's raw and rainy weather might have been suitable for ducks but that certainly doesn't go for Oregon's Ducks. They took a fierce pounding from Nebraska's football team, suffering one of the worst defeats in school history, 63-0, as the powerful Corn-buskers paraded 101 players onto the field. "I still do not believe we played as poorly as we did," said Rich Brooks, Oregon's dazed head coach. "I don't mean to take anything away from Nebraska, but our team just didn't show up. We didn't block anybody, and if you can't block a soul, there's nothing you can do.

"Nebraska's speed really hurt us," added Brooks. "That quarterback (McCathron Clayton is a good one, and the first-, second-, third-, fourth-and lOth-string tailbacks are all great." The Huskers, ranked 16th in the nation last week but playing like a No. 1 team, lost starting I-back Doug Du-Bose with a strained knee in the first quarter. But that did nothing to slow down their onslaught Paul Miles came off the bench to replace him and thundered to 156 yards in 17 carries, scoring two of the nine touchdowns one on a 46-yard run. Nebraska rolled up 589 yards in total offense, including 444 on the ground, and limited the Ducks to just 106 yards.

That last figure was a stunning one for Brooks, because his team had averaged 463 yards in its first three games victories over Washington halftime with an overwhelming 42-0 lead. It could have been worse. Oregon turned the ball over six times, and the Huskers did not capitalize on two of those opportunities early in the game. After fullback Tom Rathman's 1-yard plunge opened the scoring, Clayton lofted a 45-yard pass to wing-back Von Sheppard, paving the way for a 3-yard touchdown run by reserve Ken Kaelin. Clayton completed five of eight passes for 108 yards.

"We didn't throw the ball as much as some people would like," said Husk-er Coach Tom Osborne, "but we were very efficient and that's what I look at." Miles scored both his touchdowns in the second quarter, reserve quarterback Travis Turner plunged for one, and a 25-yard dash by No. 3 I-back Keith Jones boosted the count to 42-0. Sheppard scored twice in the second half, and one was an 8-yard thing of beauty on a late pitch from Clayton. Third-string fullback Dan Casterline finished the scoring on a short run in the last period. The game was played almost entirely in Oregon territory where 88 of the 100 snaps in the first half took place.

The Ducks didn't cross midfield until late in the third quarter. Nebraska, winning for the second time in three games, ends non-conference play at home next Saturday against New Mexico, but then will face a severe test in its Big Eight opener at Oklahoma State. DuBose's injury is not believed serious, although he may miss the New State and Stanford and a loss to Colorado. "The head coach has to take the responsibility for this," said Brooks. "I did not do a good job of preparing my team.

We're not this bad." Asked what he might have done better, Brooks said: "I'll have a long plane ride home to Eugene to think about that." This was close to being Oregon's worst loss ever. Washington holds that distinction, slapping a 66-0 defeat on the Ducks in 1974. The game began with an unusual sight empty seats in Memorial Stadium, although the paid crowd of 75,947 was Nebraska's 139th consecutive sellout. Light rain and a frigid north wind kept some of the Big Red faithful at home, and as the temperature dropped from 43 degrees at kickoff time to 31 degrees in the second half, there were many more vacant seats long before the game was over. Nebraska exploded for four touchdowns in the second quarter and left at IE 1 A North Carolina bops VMI, 51-7 CHAPEL HILL, N.C.

(AP) Tailback William Humes and fullback Brad Sullivan scored two touchdowns apiece Saturday as North Carolina cruised to a 51-7 victory over winless Virginia Military Institute. Quarterback Kevin Anthony passed for 268 yards as the Tar Heels climbed to 2-1 and sent the Keydets to their third loss. The Tar Heels broke open a scoreless game by converting on their last five possessions of the first half to forge a 27-7 halftime lead. Missouri was leading, 10-0, late in the second quarter when Allen, about 30 yards from the nearest defender, hauled in a Eradley pass on the 40-yard line and sped untouched into the end zone. Indiana took control in the third period by scoring two touchdowns and setting up Bradley's 6-yard touchdown flip to Tim Jordan that put the Hoosiers on top, 25-10, on the first play of the fourth period. Steve May recovered a fumble by Missouri quarterback Marlon Adler on the Tiger 26 on the first play of the third quarter.

Six plays later, Bradley scored the go-ahead touchdown on a 2-yard run. After a Missouri punt, Bradley engineered a nine-play, 80-yard march capped by Tom Poke's 6-yard touchdown catch that made it 20-10 with 5 minutes 45 seconds left in the quarter. The game ended in overtime with Brenda Warren's hands in the air signalling a touchdown as Omaha Holy Name defeated Omaha Flanagan, 14-8. "That was about all you could ask for in a game," Warren said as she left the field. "I think it was well-played and well-officiated." Officials of Nebraska School Activities Association and the Nebraska-, Iowa Referees Association said they were certain Warren's appearance as an official was the first for a woman.
