BARNARD AP Sports Writer ARLINGTON, Tex.

(AP) Two weeks ago the New York Yankees were hitting the ball like they were using folded-up newspaper instead of bats, but now the Bronx Bombers are living up to their name. The Yankees pounded out 19 hits, including eight doubles, Monday night in a 12-5 thumping of the Texas Rangers. That gave the New Yorkers 59 hits and 37 runs in the four-game series, which they won 3-1. "We had about 10 days where we didn't hit anything," said Yanks Manager Bill Verdon. "It seems like we never had more than five hits a night there for a while.

During our seven-game losing streak I was hoping 'It's just a but now we're hitting and I hope it's not a cycle," Leading the assault with four hits apiece for the Yankees Monday night were Roy White, Ron Blomberg and Jim Mason, who tied a major league record with four doubles. Chris Chambliss and Bobby Murcer had just one hit apiece, but both batted in three runs. Murder rapped a two-run homer. Mason, a former Ranger, joined many major leaguers who have hit four doubles in a nine-inning game. He grounded out in his other appearance.

"I'd feel a lot better if I didn't have those two errors," Mason said. "At least they didn't lead to any runs. I hit the ball real well tonight, spraying the ball to all fields." The game started like it would end 20-19, with the score tied 5-5 after just two innings. But Dick Woodson survived a shaky start to pitch 5 2-3 innings of shutout relief and pick up his second victory in five decisions. "Woodson did a hell of a job in relief," said Verdon.

"He was a little wild at first, but he snapped out on it." New York took a 3-0 lead in the first inning on Chambliss' three-run double and Texas came back with two in its half of the frame on Mike Hargrove's sacrifice fly and Lenny Handle's run-scoring hit. Gene Michael's RBI single and Murcer's groundout knocked Rangers starter Ferguson Jenkins out of the box in (he second and gave New York a 5-2 lead. But Texas got another run in on Pepe Tovar's single and had the bases loaded with no outs in the second when Woodson walked two runs in to lie the score but he survived with no further damage until being relieved in the seventh inning by Cecil Upshaw. Meanwhile New York pounced on Don Stanhouse for three more runs in the third inning on RBI doubles by Mason and White sandwiched around a run-scoring single by another former Ranger, Elliott Maddox. Murcer got his fourth homer of the year in the sixth off Stan Thomas and the Yankees added two more runs in the ninth inning against Jim Shellenback.

The Yankees traveled to Kansas City today to open a three- game series against the Royals, while Texas hit the road for a nine-game trip beginning with three against the Boston Red Sox. The Astros, sparked by Doug Rpi-'or's two-run home run and some fine defensive play, defeated the St.

Louis Cardinals, 4-1, Monday night. Griffin, who has lost only three times this year, scattered nine hits for the victory. The Cardinals' ace righthander, Lynn McGlothen, trying to join Los Angeles' Tommy Johns as a 13 game winner, was dealt his fourth defeat. "I didn't have my good stuff and I had to battle," Griffin said. Rader's ninth home run, a two-run blast off McGlothen, put the Astros ahead 2-1 in the Houston added two more in the eighth on Roger Metzger's triple, singles by Cesar Cedeno and Bob Watson, a fly ball and Milt May's infield hit.

The Cards scored their lone run in the first inning on a walk and singles by Ted Simmons and Joe Torre. Houston outfielder Greg Gross turned in a fine defensive play in the fifth inning. He nailed Lou Brock at the plate to complete a double play. Simmons hit a fly ball to Gross in medium right field and Brock tagged at third base and attempted to score after the catch. (AP) The Detroit Wheels have turned the tables on veteran pro running back Warren McVea. McVea, who showed up at the Wheels' training camp three weeks late because he really wanted to stay in Houston, says the World Football League club now has told him to stay in Texas. Wheels Coach Dan Boisture said Monday he placed McVea on indefinite suspension after he failed to show up for a practice session.

McVea, contacted in Houston, said Boisture told him by telephone, "Hell, stay down there you want to play for Houston anyway! We'll send your stuff back to you." McVea, one of the few Wheels with substantial National Football League experience, was placed on suspension shortly after he failed to appear at the opening of spring training camp in early June. TEXAS 76667 PHONE 817-688-364 Monday's practice session was to have been the last before the Wheels flew to Memphis to prepare for Wednesday's preseason opener against the Southmen. But McVea was in Houston. He said Boisture had approved his weekend trip so he could pick up some clothing.

"The coach gave me permission to come down here to get my stuff, but 1 had no intention of staying down here," McVea said. Boisture said he did not know McVea had left camp, although sources reported a team official drove the player to the airport. Sonny Grandelius, the Wheels' general manager, said he had not talked with McVea but planned to contact him later. McVea said his next move would be to have his lawyer contact the Wheels. "It looks like they never wanted me up there anyway," he said, vowing to stay in Houston until the matter is straightened out.

McVea had seven years of NFL experience with Kansas City and Cincinnati, and said he lingered in Houston in hope of being picked up there. (AP) The organized charities of Chicago could become the first casualty of the warfare between the 26 club owners of the National Football League and their striking veteran players. The College Ail-Star Game, played under the auspices of Chicago Tribune Charities, will be canceled as of 4 p.m. EDT, Wednesday, the sponsor vowed Monday, unless the warring sides agree "to allow the game to be played without interference." The cancellation threat followed the refusal of the All- Stars to practice unless the NFL Management Council, bargaining unit for the owners, and the NFL Players Association resume negotiations.

"That was a super throw," said Griffin.

"After Brock was tagged out, I threw hard and really felt built up after that." Metzger also made a great play when the shortstop fielded Reggie Smith's grounder on the second base side and threw him out in the seventh. "That kept them from scoring, just like Gross' play," said Houston Manager Preston Gomez. Rader said the ball he hit off McGlothen for the home run was a fast ball. "It was a fastball, a bad one," said Rader. He threw me two strikes on breaking balls and probably tried to waste the ball inside and it didn't get in.

He just made a mistake." Mexipro Holds On To Defeat VFW 11-9 Mexipro withstood a rally in the final inning to thwart VFW 119 in PeeWee League action Monday night at PeeWee Park. Dennis Brandl, one ofthebetter pitchers in the league, got into trouble a time or two with walks and by allowing timely base hits, but struck out the final batter with the bases loaded to preserve the win. Brandl went the distance for Manager Ronnie Fowler's Mexipro club. Eric Radde, who banged out a couple of doubles, sparked the winners at bat. For Leston Miller's VFW team, Dennis King and Jim Wright pitched.

George Johnson, who rapped out a hit, also shone defensively at second base with a couple of putouts. Tommy Johnson, Bubba Miller, Tim Posey, David Easterling, Michael Todd Miller and Jim Wright also trotted across home plate for runs. Wright rapped out three hits for VFW.
