SouthRidge 715. 9:30. 4 (,, 5 Wm After car crash, teen struck by train From The Register's Iowa Cm Bi reau Clarence, la. A teen-ager died when she was struck by a train Monday evening. Sandra Suchomel, 17, daughter of Jerry Suchomel of Iowa City, was killed instantly after she climbed up on some railroad tracks after being involved in a two-car accident near Clarence.

Cedar County Sheriffs officials said the cars of Suchomel and Sandra Brunscheen, 48, of Clarence, collided on U.S. Highway 30 east of Clarence about 6:15 p.m. Both cars ended up in the ditch between the highway and the tracks. Suchomel got out of her car and walked up on the tracks. Elsewhere: Linell Mclntire, 16, of West Liberty was killed Monday afternoon when the car she was driving left U.S.

Highway 6 near West Liberty and rolled several times, said Johnson County sheriffs officials. Wf made remarks that demeaned minorities and immigrants. The university has designated free-speech areas, MacKay said, where students and others may demonstrate. Protests in other areas are permitted, but only with approval. Movement leaders did not have that permission, MacKay said.

Conduct-code violations are handled through the university's judicial process, and students face hearings before they are punished, MacKay said. Students are likely to receive only a reprimand, she added. Movement leaders said only those students identified as "organizers" faced charges. "The more organizers, the better," said Milton McGriff, a movement leader. The group of more than 100 people walked from Memorial Union to Beardshear Hall, then sat on the steps and crowded around the mezzanine.

Warren Madden, ISU's vice president for business and finance, formally asked them to move their protest to an approved site. He said Jischke is willing to meet with the group. McGriff responded that the group wants a moderator or facilitator at any such meeting. Jischke "wants a meeting without a moderator. We don't feel that would be productive," McGriff said.

The group listened to speeches before dispersing. Half man. Half wolf. Total terror. There are designated free-speech areas on the campus, but Tuesday's demonstration was not approved.

By THOMAS R. 0'DONNELL OkTiif. Register's Ames Blwai: Ames, la. Dozens of Iowa State University students face possible disciplinary action after they crowded into ISU's main administration building Tuesday to protest the naming of Carrie Chapman Catt Hall. Protesters handed adhesive name tags to Dean of Students Kathleen MacKay so she could charge them with a violation of the student conduct code.

The students had been warned that they were holding an unauthorized demonstration when they gathered for a "town hall" meeting on the steps leading to ISU President Martin Jischke's office. MacKay had a sticky pile of the name tags when the protest broke up after about half an hour. The September 29th Movement, a group of students, faculty, staff and others, has been campaigning to have the building renamed. The case is not closed in the Monroe County sheriffs investigation of the death of an Albia couple. Glen Matters, 43, apparently killed himself in a car crash Monday after his wife of 23 years died of a heart attack two days earlier, said State Medical Examiner Thomas Bennett.

Although the medical examiner has ruled Matters' death a suicide, Chief Deputy John Riddick said it is "going to be hard to prove" that he intentionally ended his life. Foul play is not suspected. The couple's daughter said her" parents were best friends. "They're together now that's the way they wanted to be," said Jennifer Angran, 19, of Albia. Deborah Matters, whose death' was ruled a heart attack by Bennett, had a history of heart disease in her family, Angran said.

The Matters also had a son, Joe Matters, 22, of Albia. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the First Christian Church in Albia. Southwestern president quits; no reason given By MARK SIEBERT Register Staff Writer The president of Southwestern Community College in Creston resigned Monday night after a five-hour closed-door session with the college's board of directors. Richard Byerly had been president at Southwestern for 12 years.

He issued a short statement after the trustees voted unanimously to accept his resignation, but gave no details on his reasons. "I am resigning, effective immediately. 1 have enjoyed the staff, faculty and students immensely and will always cherish the memories of Southwestern Community College," his statement said. Byerly was not in his office Tuesday. He has an unlisted home telephone number.

Board President Larry Mark of Creston also was unavailable for comment Tuesday. Byerly's contract was not to have expired until June 30, 1997. According to the local paper, the most recent controversy at the school was the dumping of two dead calves in a local marsh. The calves, which were from Southwestern's new rodeo program, were dumped in a state-managed marsh south of Green Valley Lake. A college official pleaded guilty to dumping the carcasses.

The Creston News Advertiser reported that the official had been at a meeting with Byerly where the dead animals were discussed. The Southwestern board on Monday night appointed Barb Crittenden, vice president of instruction, as the school's acting president. The search for a permanent replacement probably will not begin until after the first of the year. fiM2f I 7:00 9:30 fun Package on aouow occupancy. American Airways to Wendover, 1 'I I 7 rA 1 W.

McGriff, a graduate student from Los Angeles, said there have been other attacks, including one in September on two Bangladeshi students south of campus. "Some people will probably be angry" that DeAntrious Mitchell may have fabricated the attack, McGriff said. "I'm hurt.

1 don't know that I'm angry." Mitchell, 20, had told officials that he was attacked by up to eight white men on the campus' west side after he saw one drinking alcohol and asked them for identification. The men called him racial epithets and cut him on his left arm, face and leg, Mitchell said. But on Monday, ISU Department of Public Safety officers said those wounds were self-inflicted. They charged Mitchell, who claims Phoenix, as his hometown, with making a false report and said he had admitted making up the report. "If his alleged confession is genuine and not coerced," then ISU's Black Student Alliance "does not condone his actions," said Alliance President Meron Wondwosen.

But "it doesn't mean racial attacks on campuses don't occur" or don't occur at ISU, Wondwosen added.
