That leaves the two candidates with about the same amount of cash on hand for advertising and other forms of electioneering as they prepare for the final 34 months of the campaign. "I understand it's pretty much a tied ball game. So we're pretty happy," said Phil Roeder, Campbell's campaign director. Campbell actually raised a little more money than Branstad did from June 1 through July 15, the latest campaign finance reporting period. Campbell's campaign contributions for the period exceeded $392,000.

Heading Campbell's list of contributors is Des Moines real estate executive William Knapp. His $50,000 donation during the latest reporting period boosts his campaign total to $115,000.

Another of Campbell's big financial backers, retired Younkers executive Joseph Rosenfield, gave $25,000, which raised his total contributions to $50,000. Several Branstad contributors were listed on the latest campaign reports as giving 10,000 each. They included Marvin Pomerantz, a West Des Moines businessman and former Iowa regents president, whose total 1 donations to the governor's campaign now exceed $38,000. Both candidates got big assists from national party organizations. The Democratic Governors Association gave $50,000 to Campbell's campaign and a Republican Party elections committee contributed $23,000 to Branstad's re-election bid.
