"It's something I need to correct," Castillo said. "Maybe I need to go out and warm up a little longer and get more mentally focused and prepared." But the story was Perez, who saw to it the Cubs did not get a runner past first base. This from a pitcher who entered the game with a 5.06 earned-run average. His ERA is 1.16 against Iowa.

"I can't understand why this kid's stats are where they're at," Patterson said. "He's beaten us twice. Our first two hits were in the infield. But the name of that ball game was pitching. You take away Frank's first inning and we've got a good game going." You've got to stay away from their strength." Oklahoma City got all the runs it would need in a strange first inning. Iowa starting pitcher Frank Castillo struck out the side, but the only problem was they were not the first three batters. They weren't even in succession. A triple, two doubles and a single provided the 89ers a 3-0 lead.

The first three batters set the tone for the inning Jeff Huson singled, Chuck Jackson doubled and Rob Ducey tripled. After that shaky start, Castillo settled down. In six innings, he struck out 10 and allowed only the three early runs. "It just seems like I wasn't mentally prepared to take the mound in the first inning," said Castillo, whose record dipped to 3-2. "After that I settled down and pitched my game." That has been Castillo's problem his last two outings.

Wendell (R) 6-3 2.77 By RANDY PETERSON Register Staff Writer Screech. So much for the Iowa Cubs extending their longest winning streak of the season. The Cubs were baffled by Oklahoma City pitcher David Perez and paid for it in a 6-0 loss Saturday night at Sec Taylor Stadium. A crowd of 9,446 was poised to see the Cubs increase their winning streak to seven games, but it didn't happen, largely because of Perez, who rapidly has become the Cubs' biggest nightmare. The right-hander increased his record to 7-9 with his first shutout and third complete game.

He is 2-1 against the Cubs. "The last two times we faced him, we couldn't even get a loud foul ball," Iowa Manager Rick Patterson said. "He's like Tom Seaver against us." Perez has allowed only one earned run and eight hits in his last two outings (both victories) against Iowa, the top-hitting team in the American Association. During that span, he has walked four and struck out 1 1 Saturday, he allowed five hits, but three of them, including the first two, were infield singles Tommy Shields' in the first inning and Mike Carter's bunt single in the third. The first hard hit, a single to left field by Craig Worthington in the seventh inning, broke Perez' string of 13 outs.

"It's just one of those things when the Cubs seem to come up when I have good games," Perez said. "You have to pitch them very carefully because up and down their lineup, they can hit. "The key was staying ahead in the count and hitting my spots. I was able to pitch inside tonight and force them to hit the ball off the handle of their bats. You've got to keep it inside against them because if you PLAY TO WIN! Today's Simulcasting Card Arlington AKsarben Ellis Park Hollywood 1:00 p.m.

Young was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a bad elbow. Iowa's first two batters reached base in the first inning, but were picked off first base. Shields singled behind second base, but was picked off by Perez, Kinnis Pledger reached first on a fielding error by third baseman Chuck Jackson, but also was picked off. "I don't have any problem with Tommy getting picked," Patterson said. "He was running.

The guy just gave him a good move. Pledger's I have a problem with. There's no reason in the world to get picked off if you're not running. If he was running on that play, I wouldn't have a problem."
