By SCOTT TOLLEY Palm Beach Post Staff Writer WEST PALM BEACH To F.P. Santangelo, baseball was not always a George Will soliloquy, dripping with images of Cracker-jack-smeared faces, white chalk on red dirt and the "crack" of the bat. Well, the first two images could do. But to Santangelo, the sound of baseball was the "ping" of the bat. 000 310 200 020 1003 01 7 SB Brunansky 2 (5), Qreenwell (7).

A 32,165. You know that ping. The sound of aluminum on baseball. That maker of .350 averages. That trademark of college baseball.

Matter of foot if tirQC nna the arrival of shortstop Chris Martin and his move to the outfield, Santangelo's offense held strong. Now, he's among the team leaders in nearly every category: .276 average (third), 101 hits (first), 56 runs (first), 17 doubles (first), 37 RBI (third), 20 steals (first) and .358 on-base percentage (second). Throw in four suicide squeeze bunts. "F.P.'s mechanics were like most aluminum-bat mechanics lot of top hand and hooked balls," said Expos roving hitting instructor Jay Ward. "We did a little work with him, getting him off the plate so he could use his legs.

As small as he is, he hits the ball hard because he really gets things generated with his legs. Power. I'd like more people to use their legs like he does." Sunday night, the Expos rallied from a 2-1 deficit in the fourth inning with two runs. Ken Lake singled, Rob Fletcher walked and Mike Weimerskirch singled. Lake scored on a John Mello double-play groundball and Fletcher scored on an error.

Lake added a solo homer in the sixth to help give David Sommer (10-4) the win. Pete Young pitched two innings for his 18th save. Cubs 5. Braves 4 son, Baltimore. 8-2, .800, 2.21; Bolton, Boston.

"There were some good moments, but there were more bad moments," Santangelo said. "I hit a lot of flyball outs and learned the hard way that in the Florida State League, balls just don't leave the park. That's not my role. My role is to get on base and hit line drives. "That season was gone the day I left here.

I had to get it out of my head. I could sulk and make excuses, but it comes down to performance. I decided I was going to do something about it." Immediately, Santagelo went to work. The body that was exhausted from two non-stop years of playing baseball began a strict regimen of two hours of lifting a day six days a week running stairs and hitting 200 balls a day off a tee in his garage. The added size (10 pounds) and strength (295 pounds in bench press) on his 5-foot-10 frame was put to the test this season.

But at first, Santangelo failed, dipping below .100 the first six weeks of the season. "He wasn't playing a lot early," Expos manager Felipe Alou said. "I'm sure he was afraid of his welfare. Santangelo then started showing what he could do. We changed things.

He earned (the playing time). We didn't give it to him." With the everyday time at shortstop and second base, Santan-gelo's numbers climbed. Even with Felder (14), spiers 8 bl- sumorr. J. Carter (13). fered his sixth loss in seven decisions since he started the All-Star game. Armstrong gave up five runs, eight hits and seven walks in six innings. Jeff King hit a solo homer in the eighth off Scott Scudder.

Armstrong has slumped, but Drabek has remained a consistent winner. He's 7-1 in eight starts since the All-Star break. The Reds were the only team he hadn't beaten this year his other start against Cincinnati was rained out. The right-hander is 10-0 against the NL West this season and 6-5 against the East. The Reds tried to downplay the sweep, pointing out they still have a large lead in the NL West.

"I'm not discouraged. I've got my health and we're leading," Armstrong said. The Pirates saw the sweep as momentum to build on their slim lead over the New York Mets. PIRATESfrom 1C (12-9), whose mistake to Bonilla was a hanging changeup.

"I wanted to stay out there. It was a good pitch for the count, but it was up in the strike zone, where he can do a lot of damage." Pittsburgh is 5-3 against Cincinnati this season after sweeping the series between the NL division leaders. The teams have another four-game series next weekend at Pittsburgh.
