TOGETHER Stowe earns degree at UW Madison William Stowe of Des Moines has earned a master's degree in engineering at the University of Wisconsin, Madison during recent commencement ceremonies. Mortice named to dean's honor roll Zach Mortice of Des Moines, a junior at the University of Missouri, was named to the dean's honor roll for the fall 2003 semester.

TMortice is majoring in journalism and minoring in English and film. He is a graduate of East High School and attended Central Academy. Vasquez presents Harkin with award Vincente Vasquez, 13, presented the 2004 YMCA Congressional Champion Award to Iowa Sen. Tom Harkin. Harkin has been a leading advocate on health and disease prevention for youth and families.

Throughout his career he has supported YMCAs in Iowa. He was selected for his part in helping to build strong kids, strong families and strong communities. Vasquez has been an active member of the YMCA for about four years and has participated in a variety of programs such as the YMCA Teen Leaders Club. The Greater Des Moines Community Foundation is a charitable public foundation established by community stakeholders for the purpose of improving the quality of life in greater Des Moines. The $65 million foundation initiates programs, coordinates resources and supports organizations that enhance education, community betterment, arts and culture, health and human services opportunities. Polk County board dispurses money The Polk County Board of Supervisors awarded $300,400 to 68 community and nonprofit organizations. Individual grants ranged from $1,000 to $20,000. The supervisors received 167 grant applications with requests totaling more than $2.2 million this year.

Polk County will disburse $500,000 in profits from Prairie Meadows Racetrack and Casino. Supervisors will award an additional $200,000 in April. More than 15,000 cancer patients received anonymous "Gift of Hope" bouquets in the Midwest Division, which includes Iowa, Minnesota, South Dakota and Wisconsin.

Joining Levitt in leading the foundation are new co-vice chairmen Marvin Pomerantz and Bill Knapp. Johnny Danos, Community Foundation president, also welcomed new board members Robert Burnett, Tom Press and Mark Oman.
