O'Grady 10 AM Thursday at St. Augustin Catholic Church Dunn's Funeral Home 244-2121 ilesfuneralhomes.com Merrie Lea Fielder was compassionate and strong, wise and resourceful, and a devoted friend to all, even people she had only recently met.

In countless ways, even throughout years of struggle with cancer, she opened doors for others and helped them manifest their dreams. Born in Des Moines, she attended primary school in Perry, Urbandale High School and the University of Northern Colorado, and then studied at the LanTing Classical Cultural Arts Institute in WuYi China. Always a leader, role model and adventurer, she came back to Des Moines to start Fielder and Associates, one of the earliest massage therapy practices in the metro area. She also taught Tai Chi at her own East West Bodywork School. A pioneer, she furthered the understanding and acceptance of the mind-body- spirit connection in Central Iowa.

Des Moines owes Merrie Lea tremendous thanks not just for her contributions in the healing arts, but also for her generous work in the community. Her strong hands helped build many of the 1840 and Future Farm sites at Living History Farms. Merrie Lea found the energy and passion to live life to the fullest. She was a backpacker, kayaker and fly fish-erwoman. She was the quint-essential cowgirl who immersed herself in every aspect of training and riding her horse, Scout.

She had dreamed of being the first person to ride the Continental Divide Trail from Canada to Mexico, hoping to send video and podcasts to hospitals across the country to inspire cancer patients to follow their dreams. "I want to share the joy of seeing the raptors soaring over granite summits, and elk and moose herds grazing," she said. "To give hope and a sense of the heights where so few people have tread, and to share that I know just how much it can take sometimes to imagine ever getting there." Merrie Lea died August 27, 2007, at home surrounded by friends in Des Moines. Fifty-three years old, she was preceded in death by her parents, Ron and June Fielder; and her older sister Vicki. The lives of so many have been enriched by Merrie Lea.

She is survived by her soul-mate and devoted life partner, Leslie; her sister, Renee (Mark) Meyocks; in-laws; nieces and nephews; her horse Scout and her collie Micha. Merrie Lea met every life challenge head on with the spirit of a warrior. She was a wonderfully strong presence in the universe and will be greatly missed. A Celebration of Merrie Lea's life will be held at the Greenwood Park Sylvan Amphitheater, near Grand Avenue Art Center on Saturday, September 1 at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to The Rainbow Center, 305 15th Street, Des Moines, IA 50309, in memory of Merrie Lea.
