By LISA C0L0NN0 Mu'SM" MAII ftR'll The Des Moines Menace will debut another rung on the development ladder for local soccer talent this spring. The Menace have added a Super20 league team for Che coming season, which will fall under the same I nited Soccer leagues umbrella as the un- der-23 Premier Development league Menace.

The Su(er-20 team will serve as a development squad for the PDL Menace and give area soc cer players from the ages of 1 7-20 between the high school and PDL levels another option for playing the sport during the summer months. The nice thing it is as they develop, we can move them up," Menace general man ager Alan Oatsvall said. "It's a great opportunity for players who are not quite there or were not recruited by the PDL team. It's a chance for them to show what they can do." The Super-20 League team also will be called the Des Moines Menace and work closely with the PDL team, but will have a separate coach, yet to be hired. The Menace now can develop players from the youth levels in the already-existing Menace Academy through the PDL.

It another step in the pyra mid," Oatsvall said. Local players are expected to make up the nucleus of the Super-20 League team, which will play about a 10-match schedule that has yet to be announced. Oatsvall does not expect the team to hold tryouts this season, but for players to be chosen through a selection process. "It something we can do to create more soccer in Des Moines," Oatsvall said. "There is a lot of good soccer here and a lot don't know it.

We want to win the division and to create more recognition nationally for the Menace and local players. It's all part of the development pyramid for soccer." The USL formed the Super- 20 League last season. The Menace will join the Mid west Division, which grows from five to 12 teams this season. The Menace's Super-20 team will play home matches at Waukee Stadium before the PDL team competes. Fans would be admitted to both matches for the price of one, Oatsvall said.

The Cyclones warmed up in the second half with 52 per cent accuracy from the field, considerably better than the 2H.6 percent they shot during the initial 20 minutes. And talk about ugly, Kansas State missed 19 of its 25 first-half shots. "Defense won the game for us, Medders said. It certainly wasn't much we did offensively." Iowa State never trailed, although there were four ties. Wieben broke the last knot, at 33-33, with a layup, and then gave the Cyclones a 44-37 lead with only her third 3-point basket against a conference opponent this season.

Haluska a HALUSKA, from Page 3C man team by the coaches. "It's definitely a great honor," Haluska said.

"I just think it's one of those things where my teammates did a great job all year." Haluska emerged as the Hawkeyes' most versatile player this season, helping Iowa to a 17-13 record, 9-7 in the Big Ten. He was forced to carry more of the scoring load after the departures of Horner and Brunner, but it was speculation surrounding Alford that could have left him shaken. Alford was mentioned as a possible candidate for the coaching job at Indiana a year ago, and then became linked to the vacancy at Missouri. "He was all bent out of shape, because he had transferred (after his freshman year at Iowa State) and he's extremely close to our coaching staff because of the type of person he is," Alford said. "He had a lot of concerns from that end, and we were just trying to reassure him that we're not going anywhere."
