The Des Moines RegisM CC Teens want to hear advice from their parents really Paq 6E Tuesday. March 27. 2007 PARENTING, from Page 1E Q. Why was II especially Important to have a class on communication with teenage males? A. Because teenagers for the most part rt ally yearn for that, hut I think that adults art scared of (hem.

They don't know what to say. We believe, as adults, that the teenagers of today's society look at us as big dweebs, and what do we have to offer? But yet the research shows that boys, and girls too want the parents to be involved. We still have, us parents, as adults, a big percentage of the influence to impact their life and we need to take that opportunity. Details WHAT: -Communicating With Your Teenage Muio What's Really Up?" WHEN: 5 30-8 pm. today WHERE: Meredith Middle School, 4827 Madison Ave Dos Moines.

The session will be repeated at the same time on three ditlurent dates at different locations. The three other dates and locations are: March 29: Merrill Middle School, 5301 Grand Des Moines April 10: Southeast Polk Junior High School, 8031 E. University Pleasant Hill April 12: Woodslde Middle School, 5810 E. 14th Dos Moines COST: Free CONTACT: Diana Sosalla at 261-4202 or sosaliaiastate edu to reserve a space, or you can just show up NOTE: Teens are encouraged to attend the workshop with their parents or mentors. A light supper will be provided from 5 30 to 6 m.

Child care is available upon request. Q. What are Ihi specific challenges when II comes lo teenage boys? A. I think they're as much ufraid of us as we as a society tend to be afraid of them. They're afraid to come to us, to talk about their vulnerabilities.

Our society still says lh.it guys have to be macho, we've got to have bravado. Guvs come to talk to somebody and start talking ubout hurt feelings or a bro-ken-up relationship or dysfunction in the home you know they're holding in a lot of emotion because they haven't been given permis-sion to say. "Hey. you know what. I'm not doing OK.

Will you help me?" The other thing is that I don't think people really know how to get kids involved. If you go into an office and sit with a teenager, they'll look at you like a deer in headlights. But if you go out and shoot hoops with them, or if you teach them how to drive a car, you buy a fries and hamburger from McDonald's, they're going to be more open to talking with you. As we share and self disclose, they will be open to that. too.

One of the things I've found in working with teenage boys is they're looking at udults to sny, 'You know what, I failed in these ureas, I struggled with this, I did this and it didn't They're looking at us as if we're kind of perfect and they're scared to their vulnerabilities because they're not having anybody role model for them how to address that. Q. What's thi blggast mistaki or misconception parents make when trying lo communicate with teen males? A. That their kids don't want to. That their kids would rather be with their friends, rather lw out at the mall, they'd rather be doing things than spending time with them.

I think that's the biggest fallacy that we have as udults to overcome. The research and the literature shows kids in high schools and junior highs, they want parental involvement. They want structure. They want somebody to set boundaries. They might resent (that), but that's part of being a teenager.

I think parents just kind of neath that. I don't think kids are looking for us to agree with them, but they're looking for us to say, "You know what, I don't agree with this, but you're your ow person and I want to help you become the best that you can be." Rtporlei Dawn Sigarlo tin be rtichl 11(515)284 S351 or dugirlotfdmtig com abdicute their roles as parents and say, "Well, I can't do anything, lie's not listening to me. I give up." Then the kid sees that as rejection, and carries that wound with him. Q. What's the most Important thing parents can do? A.

Unconditional acceptance. A nonjudgmental attitude. If they're Goth they're still a human being under life with inventive guile I Play dresses REVIEW, from Page 1E Communist regimes. Whatever else von Mahlsdorf accomplished before her death in 2002 is up for debate, but the skill with which actor Philip Lehl tells her story is beyond dispute. With little more than a 180-degree pivot or a simple shift in posture, he morphs into starkly different roles, including an American journalist ith a convincing Southern drawl, a Nazi commander and a smarmy talk-show host named Ziggy Fluss, Germany's answer to Tony Danza.

To tackle each role, Lehl draws on years of onstage experience as a student at Roosevelt High School, Drake University and New York's Juilliard School. Along with the play's cross-dressing heroine and dozens of bit parts, Lehl portrays Doug Wright, the play's creator, who based the script on more than 500 pages of transcripts from his interviews with von Mahlsdorf between 1992 and 1994.

Wright wrote himself into the play as a way to show how he struggled to figure out which parts of her story were true, which parts were exaggerated and which parts including allegations that von Mahlsdorf collaborated with East German spies were glossed over. Although Wright uncovers evidence suggesting she turned over one of her closest friends to the secret police, the playwright, a gay man who grew up in the Bible Belt, would rather focus on her acts of courage. "I need to believe in her stories as much as she does," he says. "I need to believe that a long time ago, in an attic a generous aunt handed her confused nephew a book and a blessing. That Lothar Befelde navigated a path between the two most repressive regimes the Western World has ever known." If the play has a fault, it's this too-easy dismissal of von Mahlsdorf 's shortcomings. The play shines a spotlight on the allegations against her in the second act, in fact, a single file of documents replaces the collection of antiques displayed onstage. But it leans a little too far in her favor. It's too bad the show doesn't leave more room for viewers to reach their own conclusions.

Still, the script didn't win a Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award for nothing, and StageWest's production gives it the thoughtful attention it deserves. Snippets of a Strauss waltz or the sounds of World War II bombs, combined with changing images on a pair of cleverly designed wall hangings, help the story's flashbacks come to life. When von Mahlsdorf plays a tune on an antique record player, she recounts how Thomas Edison invented the gadget nearly a century before. As the tinny melody envelopes the room, she demonstrates the grooved cylinder and pins of the gizmo's inner mechanism. With the same fascination, "I Am My Own Wife" describes what makes von Mahlsdorf tick, unlocking the secrets of how she found a way to express herself in spite of nearly impossible odds.

Although the story's particulars may seem unusual, it's ultimately about finding a way to fulfill the very basic, very human need to live life on one's own terms. And necessity, after all, is the mother (or dress-wearing father) of invention.
