May 9, 1986 THE DES MOINES REGISTER 3S REGISTER PHOTO BY HARRY BAUMERT IHSIDE REPORT i Yankees set a surprise from mischievous Reuss Los Aneeles Ditcher Jerry Reuss turned trade rumors into a wide-eyed practical joke at the visitors dressing room of Comiskey Park in Chicago, when he reported to INew York Yankees' Manager Loo Piniella. Ac cording to reporters, the Tuesday night exchange went this way: "Pleased to meet you," Reuss said as he put a Dodgers' equipment bag down in Piniella's office. "I Ditched Friday, so I'll do whatever you want, start or relieve. A startled Piniella asked Reuss what he was talking about. "Didn't George call?" Reuss tendon, which snapped Wednesday while playing badminton with UNI football coach Darrcll Mudra.

The 46-year-old Miller will remain at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo two or three days, then is expected to have his leg in a cast for several months. The nine undergraduates eligible for the NBA draft on June 17 are: Walter Berry of St. John's; William Bedford of Memphis State; Dwayne "Pearl" Washington of Syracuse; Chris Washburn of North Carolina State; John Williams of Louisiana State; Michael Graham of Georgetown and the University of the District of Columbia; Cedric Henderson of Georgia; Jerald Hyatt of Lincoln Memorial and Andre Morgan of Hawaii. Several could be among the top seven lottery picks, held by Boston, Philadelphia, Dallas, Phoenix, Golden State, Indiana and the New York Knicks. The Kansas City Sizzlers, box office failures in their first Continental Basketball Association season and even less successful in trying to sell tickets for next season, have notified the league that they are working on a move to Topeka, Kan.

Close to Home: Drake seniors Earl Snyder and John Patterson were named co-winners of the Scott Beck-with Award at the Bulldog wrestling banquet honoring this year's team. The Beckwith Award goes to the wrestler deemed to be the hardest -worker. Snyder was 35-7 while Pat- terson was 35-8, including a team- leading 14 pins. Juniors Pat Meyer and Barry Preslaski were also honored at the annual event. Former Iowa State football coach Donnie Duncan, now director of the Sun Bowl, is one of the leading candidates to replace Wade Walker as athletic director at Oklahoma.

Walker's resignation, effective Dec. 15, was approved Thursday by the Oklahoma regents. Miscellany: Calvin Griffith heads a list of five people to be inducted into the Minnesota Sports Hall of Fame on Monday. The others are John Mariucci, a member of the Hwkey Hall of Fame who was instrumental in the development of U.S. hockey; former Vikings football player Jim Marshall; 1959 Wimbledon doubles champion Jeanne Arth and the late Bruce Smith, Minnesota's only Heisman Trophy winner.

The Men's International Professional Tennis Council fined top-seeded Ivan Lendl of Czechoslovakia and eighth seeded Andres Gomez of Ecuador $350 each Wednesday. Lendl was given a Code of Conduct warning after he slammed bis racket to the ground in frustration Tuesday night, breaking it. Gomez, who was upset in Wednesdays second round by Brunc Oresar of Yugoslavia, was fined for "unsportsmanlike conduct." v' replied, referring to Yankees owner George Steinbrenner. When Piniella said he had received no word from Steinbrenner, Reuss added, "Then we better close the door and talk." Reuss then opened his equipment bag, revealing only a couple of towels, and confessed to the prank. Subject of repeated rumors this year he might be traded, Reuss said: "It had to be done.

If I have to suffer through all these rumors, I'm going to have some fun, too." Elsewhere in Basketball: Northern Iowa Coach Eldon Miller had surgery Thursday to repair his right Achilles Iowa hitting star John Knapp (center) is congratulated at die after he hit a home run against Northern Iowa earlier the plate by teammates Randy Frakes (left) and Rob Ed- this season. "The bieeest thine I've noticed is A'd vision of Fuqua John Knapp his maturity both mentally and physi-callv." Watson said. "I figured he had a lot of tools when he was a sopho more in high school, but back then ne was just a tall, skinny kid.

With normal maturity he turned into a good-sized kid with some upper body strength." Continued from Page One to get to Greene. Brown said the wrap on one of his hands was too tight just before the fight, and the re-wrapping cut into his warm-up time. And because of Greene's crouching style, Brown said he couldn't make his left uppercut work for points, especially when the fighters clinched. John McMurray, Brown's coach, said he told his fighter to throw a flurry of punches every time that Greene clinched. Greene lost both points in the third round.

Bates, who defeated two-time champion Johnny Tapia of New Mexico on Wednesday night, caught Singh with a two-punch combination and sent the New York fighter into the ropes midway through the first round. The referee gave Singh a standing eight count and the fight's outcome seemed assured after that. Bates said the big series was a big left hook that followed a lead right to the jaw. Despite having trouble with Singh's unorthodox fighting style, Bates said he felt good. "Because he was so awkward it was hard to get things together.

The ref wouldn't get his head up," Bates said. "I had to figure out a way to pick his head up and then take it off." Knapp had a rookie season second to none. He was a first-team all-Big Ten selection and made the freshman all-America team after batting .395 and leading the team in hits, total bases and doubles. His sophomore season wasn't as sweet. He hit only .286 and his production in every category dropped.

Eyes Pro Draft "It seemed like there was a lot more pressure on me after that good freshman year," Knapp said. "I hurt my back early in the season, and never had time to rehabilitate." "He was coming off a great freshman season," Banks said, "and I think he felt he had to do everything perfect instead of just going out and playing the game, Now he's able to relax and he enjoys playing again." How long he plays for the University of Iowa is a question. The pro baseball draft is June 2, and Knapp's stellar season has caught the attention of more than one major-league team. "I'm not sure what I want to do right now," Knapp said. "There are a lot of things to consider, like what round I'm drafted in, and how is the team going to be next year.

Everything rests on my shoulders. My father Paul told me to wait until the season was over, then make the decision that was best for me." "Every time he relaxes a little bit, the ball is hit to him," the coach said, "but doggone it, he's still going to drive in more runs that he gives up." "I think I need work on my defensive skills," said Knapp, a converted high school shortstop who has committed 22 errors this season. "Down the road, I would still like to play third, but I think I'm capable of playing the outfield. I think my arm is strong enough to play out there." He doesn't need to tinker with his production at the plate.
