East Waterloo's other choice was Fred Franklin, who, like Scott, was an all-Big Eight Conference pick. Named to the all-state tournament team, Franklin averaged better than 14 points and had the ability to dribble the basketball faster than most preps can run.

You almost have to wonder how good East Waterloo would have been if a court order last winter hadn't forced Jerry Nash to leave East and continue his schooling at city-rival Central. A fifth-team pick, Nash wound up this season as a unanimous all-Big Eight Conference choice while averaging 16 points a game. And, at 6-5, he would have given the Trojans what they needed badly, the good, big man. Wahlert's other honoree was 6-9 Scott Plondke, a transfer from Wisconsin, who finished as the Mississippi Valley's No. 2 rebounder and third-highest scorer.

4 Non-Seniors He's one of four non-seniors named to this year's honor teams. Burnham, Plondke and Maquoketa's Jeff Fleming, a seventh-team choice, are juniors while Kennedy of Cedar Rapids' Al Lorenzen, named to the seventh team, is one of the rare sophomores ever to be honored. In the past decade and a half, the only other sophomores who have been named have been Mark Gannon of Regina of Iowa City, Todd Berkenpas of Maple Valley of Mapleton and Chris Kern of Lincoln of Des Moines. So, the 6-7 Mi Lorenzen is in good company. However, he was instrumental in leading the Cougars to this year's Mississippi Valley Conference crown, leading the league In rebounding and averaging better than 14 points a contest.

Fleming, the son of Maquoketa Coach Bill Fleming, scored 19 points a game, assisted on more than that and was an all-WaMaC Conference selection. Curt Woods of Prairie of Cedar Rapids, a fifth-team pick, is another who has shown his versatility. He quarterbacked the Hawks' to last fall's Class 3-A football title. Fleming, at 5-9, is the shortest of the 35 players honored. The tallest is Tom Faber of Dowling of West Des Moines, the 6-10 center who was selected on the fourth unit Faber averaged 19 points and 13 rebounds although being hampered by a summer injury early in the season.

He helped the Maroons reach the sub-state final. Two other Des Moines players were honored: East's Curtis Morrow on the fifth team and forward Craig King of Metropolitan Conference champion Roosevelt on the sixth. All 35 players named to The Register's all-state teams will be honored at the Register-Iowa Basketball Coaches Association's annual all-state banquet April 18 in the Memorial Union at Iowa State University. Cyclone basketball Coach Johnny Orr will be the featu.ed speaker. HONORABLE MENTION Continued from Page Gne Steve Thein of Central Elkader and Chris Akers of 1-A runner-up Central City, center Blake Burnham of Lewis Central of Council Bluffs and guards Daryl Schnoes of Paullina and Milt Jackson of Fairfield.

Schneider was named the most valuable player in this year's Class 2-A tournament and has been the Royals' scoring leader the past two seasons. The 6-4 senior averaged better than 14 points and probably could have scored more on what had to rate as one of the state's most balanced teams. Three other Regis players, guard Dick Breitbach, center Dennis Paulsen and forward Brian Stephan, received either special or honorable mention. Prine Records The 6-5 Prine never had the distinction of playing on a winning team, but established numerous school records playing in the rugged Omaha Metro Conference, including 1,112 career points, 616 career rebounds and a single-game high of 44 points against city-rival Abraham Lincoln. His value was pointed out when he was sidelined during the Omaha Metro holiday tournament and missed playing in a one-sided loss to Benson of Omaha.

Then, in the regular season, when Benson was ranked second in Nebraska, he paced his club to an upset victory. Tillo was the only senior starter for the Stars as they earned second place in Class 3-A. A two-time all-Sioux Interstate Conference selection, he averaged better than 14 points a game and was No. 2 in rebounds. Scott was East Waterloo's floor leader and No.

1 scorer, averaging better than 18 points and leading the Trojans in assists. He shot better than 54 percent from the field and was one of the main factors in the Trojans' full-court press that forced many turnovers and earned the club its third-place finish in 3-A. Wurdinger, a 6-2 senior, was at his best in a semifinal-round loss to Assumption in which he scored 22 of his team's 34 points. A three-year starter, he was the Go-Hawks' leading scorer each of the past three seasons averaging 16.5, 17.2 and 18 points, was a three-time all-Northeast Iowa Conference pick as he led his team to three straight loop titles and led this year's squad with eight assists a contest. Special Mentions Space doesn't allow mention of all players on the seven teams, but a number deserve special mention.

Among those are third-teamers Burnham, Jackson and Schnoes. Burnham, a 6-7 Vi junior, is the highest of four non-seniors named to the honor units. The Lewis Central center already' has been a two-time unanimous Hawkeye Eight Conference selection and this season averaged 21 points and 16 rebounds. Jackson and Schnoes both are honored for their basketball exploits for the second straight year, Jackson being named to the seventh team a year ago, Schnoes the fourth. Jackson, of course, is better known as a football player, having been named to several all-American units this past fall and to The Register's elite all-state unit as a wide receiver.

The 6-1 senior is headed for Notre Dame on a football scholarship, but for the second straight year averaged more than 20 points a contest in leading the Trojans to the Southeast Seven Conference crown. Schnoes has been Kraayenbrink's running mate at Paullina for three seasons and a year ago was the leading scorer and rebounder in the Panthers' state tourney success. Iowa will field a full 12-man team when the National Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions opens Monday night. Thirty-two teams are scheduled to compete in the six-night event.
