Scoring 17 points in both the second and third quarters, Northern Iowa overcame a sluggish start to pound Wisconsin-LaCrosse, 41-0, in the Panthers' homecoming game at the UNI-Dome Saturday afternoon. UNI, winning for the third time in six starts, fumbled four times in the first half, losing two, before the offense got untracked in the second quarter to hand LaCrosse its first loss in six games. Despite rolling up 528 yards of total offense and working the long pass play for two touchdowns, the Panthers didn't get a rave review on their performance from Coach Darrell Mudra.

"I was kind of disappointed that we weren't a little sharper," said Mudra. The Panthers got on the board on their second possession of the second quarter, marching 75 yards in 12 plays. Chris Miliner, who kept the drive going with a key first down one play earlier, dove over left guard for the 1-yard score. Mike Molstead added the extra point, one of five he would kick along with field goals of 29 and 42 yards. After Doug Ware stepped in front it Darryl Goree, who had bis second straight 100-yard reception game.

Miller chose a new receiver near1 the end of the third quarter, hitting" senior halfback James Vaughn on a. screen pass that turned into a 67-yard1 romp. After catching the ball, Vaughn' got away from a would-be tackier. Miller, replaced by freshman Kevin Willard in the fourth completed 20 of 35 passes for 280.1 yards. Willard started slowly but quickly went to work with his tossing his first collegiate touchdown to high school teammate Bryan Taylor from 75 yards.

Following the slow start, Mudra said a tightened defensive unit and Fuller's punt return helped to provide the turnaround. The Panthers return to Mid-Con ti- nent Conference play at Eastern Illinois.
