4FDES MOINES SUNDAY REGISTER February 26, 1989 Here's an easy way to submit your request to participate in RAGBRAI route on; get in gear burn, all of it unplanned and the customary mind-boggling Iowa hospi dWIIP1 tality, Speaking of fun, I'm pleased to re Check the appropriate box in one area below, carefully follow directions, PRINT CLEARLY, and postmark by April 1, 1989. Read John Karras' article beginning on Page One of the EntertainmentTravel section, then use this form to help you submit your request to participate. We want to ride and let you carry our baggage. Number of riders $40 each Fill out the form below, print 'BAGGAGE' on the outside of your envelope and mail it to the address below along with your check and unstamped, self-addressed, business-size envelope. 1 (Each rider receives a wristband and a baggage tag, but no vehicle pass.) 2 We want a vehicle pass (only 500 available).

If we're not drawn for one, please refund our money and we'll stay home. Number of riders $40 each II Fill out the form below, print 'VEHICLE' on the outside of your II envelope and mail it to the address below along with your check and self-addressed, unstamped, business-size envelope. fl fl ill Number of non-riders 1 5 each $. 2. If you want The Register to carry your baggage, or are planning to go with a charter group, write "BAGGAGE" on the outside of the envelope.

If your names are drawn, all of those listed will receive baggage tags in their packets. 3. If you want to take a vehicle on the ride (a bad idea, really), write "VEHICLE" on the outside of the envelope. Include a check covering the cyclists' fees plus the fee for anyone accompanying your group as a noncyclist (again, see explanation above). Again, be sure to include a self-addressed envelope.

We will issue only 500 vehicle passes. 4. If you want to be considered for baggage tags even if you don't receive one of the 500 vehicle passes, write "OPTIONAL" on the outside of the envelope. Your request will go first into the vehicle drawing, then into the regular baggage tag drawing if it misses one of the vehicle passes. Send requests postmarked by April lto: RAGBRAI-XVII P.O.

Box 622 Des Moines, la. 50303 A coupon accompanying this article contains a form for your use in submitting your requests to participate in RAGBRAI-XVII. Two final points: First, the sole purpose of this ride is to amuse Iowa Boy Chuck Offenburger and me. If you go along, you go solely on your own responsibility and at your own risk. None of us assumes any responsibility for your belongings, well being or entertainment.

Second, the terms "The Register's Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa" and "RAGBRAI" are registered trademarks of The Des Moines Register and cannot be used without written consent, which, believe me, is very hard to get. Barring some incredible stupidity, such as another heart attack, I'm counting on being there again this year. Donald Kaul may even return. We'll see. Total amount Continued from Page IF 1980, when the ride ended in Gutten-berg, and in 1984, when the terminus was Burlington.

This will be our first finish in Belle-vue, where RAGBRAI Wagonmaster Don Benson and I have wanted to end RAGBRAI for at least three years. This will also be our first overnight in Clarinda, another community we've wanted to get to for three years; our third overnight in Atlantic; the second Jefferson and Story City; and the first in Cedar Falls and Dyersville. Counties touched by this year's route, from west to east, are Mills, Fremont, Page, Montgomery, Cass, Audubon, Guthrie, Greene, Boone, Story, Hamilton, Hardin, Grundy, Black Hawk, Buchanan, Delaware, Dubuque, Jones (just barely), and Jackson. Towns? Indeed, we have towns, some of which appear only on county road maps. At least two communities Larland and Crab Town aren't there at all.

Another Iron Hill, a group of houses exists but doesn't appear on the map. Again from west to east, the communities are Glenwood, Bartlett, Tabor, Randolph, Shenandoah, Norwich, Clarinda, Bethesda, Stanton, Griswold, Lewis, Atlantic, Exira, Wichita, Bayard, Scranton, Jefferson, Paton, Pilot Mound, Story City, Randall, Jewell, Ellsworth, Steamboat Rock, Welisburg, Dike, Cedar Falls, Waterloo, Dewar (maybe, depending on how we finally come out of Waterloo), Jesup, Independence, Winthrop, Manchester, Earlville, Dyersville, Worthington, Cascade, Garry Owen, Iron Hill, Andrew, Springbrook and Bellevue. We'll probably insert an optional loop between Story City and Cedar Falls for those who want to ride 100 miles that day, but more on that at a later date. You may be wondering about terrain. Yes, there will be terrain, four miles of it unpaved north of Stanton, (Each member of the party receives a wristband.

port that one version of it appeared to have declined last year. I refer, of course, to underage drinking. We're requiring once again that anyone under 18 on the ride have an adult sponsor. Also, as was done last year, anyone under 18 accosted with an alcoholic drink in hand will be summarily sent home, no questions asked. Also, once again, we appeal to your sense of fair play if your name is not among those drawn for RAGBRAI-XVII credentials.

We limit the cyclists to 7,500 for one reason and one reason only experience has shown that with many more than that the roads practically turn into bicycle gridlock. So if your name isn't drawn, please plan a vacation of another kind, and try again in 1990. Some of you will want private housing. Such requests have boomed in recent years. As they did last year, the host communities will honor only those requests that come from persons whose names are among the 7,500 drawn.

Included in the RAGBRAI package are certificates redeemable for official RAGBRAI patches. Each certificate is numbered. Only requests for private housing that include certificate numbers will be recognized. So here we go with the rules and procedures for applying to attend RAGBRAI-XVII. Wristbands will identify official RAGBRAI riders; unofficial riders will be banished to the shoulder: 1.

List the names, ages and addresses of everyone in your group, including the names of sponsors for those under 18. All riders under 18 must carry a medical release form (included in rider packets) signed by a parent or guardian. Families and other small groups should submit their requests as groups. Include a check made out to RAGBRAI-XVII covering the fees (see explanation above) for those listed. Include a self-addressed envelope.

Fill out the form below, print 'OPTIONAL' on the outside of your envelope and mail it to the address below along with your check and self-addressed, unstamped, business-size envelope. 3 We want a vehicle pass, but if not drawn for one, we still want to go, letting you carry our gear and leaving our vehicle home. In that case, non-rider fees will be refunded. fl fl El II Number of riders (a $40 each Number of non-riders 1 5 each Total amount (Each rider receives a wristband and a baggage tag, it needed.) Terrain continues, of course, but much of it from Bayard to Bellevue is flat, punctuated here and there by character-builders.

For example, long-time RAGBRAI riders will recall, some fondly, the character-builder just east of Pilot Mound. First-timers will discover it for themselves.
