My son is now on med ication, but nothing helps as much as Sheriff's crash causes uproar before election By JENNIFER MORLAN Register Staff Writer Residents upset by the Jackson County sheriff's involvement in a car accident last month have launched a understanding and acceptance by his peers and others. DEAR ANN LANDERS: Our 9-year-old son has Tourette syndrome. Last year he had a very hard time in school and was the subject of ridicule and embarrassment.

He makes loud noises, grunting, snorting and barking. When we go anywhere, people turn around to look at our son as if he is making those sounds to attract attention or to be annoying. I hope you will print this letter and educate a few million people. It would Anyone wanting information about this disorder should write to: Tourette be a service to those of us who live with the problem everyday. Today, Robinson says, it's important for police officers to tell politicians about the practical effect of their laws.

"When I first came here, it was startling," Chief William Moulder says of Robinson's political work. "Where I was from, the line was very clear you just did not get around politicians." The risk, he says, is clear. Moulder says Robinson understands the distinction. And Steve Roberts, a state Republican official, says, "At ings. Drug enforcement agents acting on a confidential tip searched Sistrunk's apartment July 14 and found 5 ounces of white powder in a shaving kit in the refrigerator. The powder tested positive for cocaine, authorities said. Sistrunk is accused of trafficking in cocaine in the year leading up to his arrest. If convicted, he could be sentenced to a maximum of 20 years in prison and would have to serve a minimum of 27 to 33 months.

The vocational coordinator for the Council Bluffs School District has been found dead of a gunshot wound to the head in southern Georgia, officials said Thursday. Lorenzo Harmon Tucker, 55, of By MELAME LEWIS Register Staff Writer A former University of Iowa football player charged with drug dealing failed to appear at a court hearing in Des Moines Thursday afternoon and faces arrest if he fails to show up a second time today. Sistrunk's lawyer, Alfredo Parrish, said he has had difficulty contacting Sistrunk, who has been free on $25,000 bond and allowed to return to his hometown of Dayton, Ohio. His trial is to begin Monday. The ex-Hawkeye reportedly board- ed a bus for Iowa Thursday morning, Parrish said.

Sistrunk was supposed to be in Des Moines on Oct. 31 to provide a hand-writing sample for federal but he failed to appear. "My office got a call that said he would be in Des Moines the next day, but he didn't show," Parrish said. U.S. District Judge William Stuart said he would issue a warrant and lhave Sistrunk arrested if he isn't in Des Moines by 10 a.m.

At Thursday's hearing, Sistrunk's lawyer was to argue that statements Sistrunk made to authorities at the the same as picking up a handful of charcoal. It blackens clothing, uphol political rallies, you wouldn't know that he was with the police department." Robinson explains, "One of the things I have to do is balance my job with the amount of political activity that somehow doesn't interfere with the job and become incompatible." But there are moments when the lines blur. Earlier this year, in a speech to the Iowa State Policeman's Association, Robinson joked that Iowa was looking for ways to keep criminals in prison while Massachusetts apparently was looking for ways to get them out, an obvious reference to Democratic presidential candidate Michael Dukakis' prison furlough program.

In 1981, in testimony before a U.S. Senate subcommittee, Robinson expressed his opposition to a ban on so-called "cop-killer bullets," which penetrate bullet-proof vests. Robinson said the ban would apply to popular brands of ammunition. He said he was representing the Des Moines Police Department, but then-City Manager Richard Wilkey and then-Police Chief Billie B. Wallace quickly countered that Robinson was speaking for himself.

At the end of the testimony, Senator Joseph Biden, who debated Robinson about the bullet ban, said, "You ought to be in politics." Well, how about it? Roberts says Robinson is such an accomplished speaker that he had state Republicans whooping and shouting when he ran for a second term on the state central committee. Robinson, ever the politician, is coy about his ambitions. He points out that his childhood hero in Wisconsin was a man who served as mayor, policeman, school board member and on the county board of supervisors at the same time. "As long as the police job stays fun and interesting, I'll likely have to resolve conflicts in its favor," he says. He pulls into a convenience store.

Two officers are talking to a group of men. Robinson identifies the man in the middle as a pimp. The pimp greets Robinson with a handshake, like they were long lost friends. "Two weeks ago, I had a fight with him you wouldn't believe," Robinson says later. Maybe politics and police work aren't so alien after all.

Both require organization. Both require an ability to persuade people. Both, at times, require hard-ball tactics. Both can, he says, be fun. "I'm having a ball," he says.

He gets back in his car to continue his rounds. George Bush is ahead in the polls. The streets are quiet. All is right in Kayne Robinson's world. stery, carpets, you name it.

scheduled in C.R. CEDAR RAPIDS, IA. (AP) -Shaker Nassif, accused of smuggling millions of dollars worth of heroin from Lebanon to Cedar Rapids, will enter a plea today in U.S. District Court in Cedar Rapids. Trial for Nassif, 42, who had pleaded innocent to 12 charges, had been set for Nov.

8, but an order setting up a time for a plea hearing was filed Tuesday. Nassif was arrested May 5 in Cedar Rapids after customs officials last October intercepted a package addressed to him. However, Doty said he realizes that being a write-in candidate lessens his chances of being elected. "A lot of people vote one ticket across the board and some might not want to take the time to write my name in." Lyons, who has served as sheriff for 20 years, said he doesn't consider Doty to be a threat. "I have no idea why he's running and furthermore, I Omaha was found by a hunter Tuesday in a rural area near Valdosta.

Lowndes County sheriff's officials have yet to classify the death as a homicide, although it appeared Tucker had died at another location and his body was dumped where it was found. Council Bluffs Superintendent Richard Christie said word of Tucker's disappearance and death came as "an absolute shock" to school officials. Tucker reportedly was last seen a week ago. He attended a school seminar and was seen about 2:20 p.m. cashing a check in Council Bluffs.

Officials don't know why Tucker was in Georgia, but Christie doesn't think Tucker went voluntarily. "I don't think anybody believes he voluntarily went to Georgia," Christie said. Christie described Tucker as successful in his field and popular with students and staff. "From a professional standpoint, he was riding the top of the wave," Christie said. "My impression was he was doing exactly what he wanted to do and had asked to do, and really was having some successes in that lAinn aboa iniMniPnf don't care," he said.
