Andrew Parker's mother picked the wrong game to watch her son play college basketball for the first time. Parker and his Iowa State teammates were at their worst Wednesday while suffering a 79-67 loss, to Alabama-Birmingham, which is in its first season of collegiate competition. "1 brought you bad luck, baby, and maybe I'd better not come see you play any more," said Mrs.

Annie Parker of Fort Lauderdale, who was at the game with Andrew's brother, Major, and two sisters, Dianie and Debra. The Cyclones (3-5) shot a frigid 36 percent and Parker, their usual scoring leader, made only three of 13 attempts and was held to 13 points. Even more disturbing to Coach Lyfln Nance than the poor shooting was the fact that the Cyclonens also took a whipping on the backboards, 44-41. Nance gave the team a tongue-lashing for 30 minutes before he left the dressing room to meet with the press. "This was a bad game," admitted Parker, "and he just gave us what we deserved." Even with all their shooting and rebounding problems, however, the Cyelones still held a 48-46 lead midway through the second half.

But Alabama-Birmingham ripped off 10 straight points at that point and outscored Iowa State, 33-19, in the final 10 minutes. 'Larry Spicer, a Moot 8-inch junior transfer from Baylor, collected six of those points while the Blazers were assuming command. He officially was credited with a game-high 24 But Spicer had only two points at halftime and most box scores along press row showed him with 18 in the second half. No matter. The youthful Blazers (t3) of Coach Gene Bartow were clearly the superior team down the stretch in posting their third straight victory.

We played well at Mississippi State the other night (an 80-70 defeat), but in this game we got a few shots blocked and then our players were afraid to go back to the basket. That's what I mean by lack of courage. We can't use playing on the road and being tired as any excuse, because you play half your games on the road and our players must learn to do better than this.

'You're always going to have off-nights shooting," he added, "'but there is. no excuse for us to be outrebound- Aggie's Curtis Dickey shifts directions and gears on By BUCK TURNBULL Rtviittr JtaH WrHar BIRMINGHAM, ALA. Texas A. and M. junior running back Curtis Dickey rushed for 276 yards in 34 carries and propelled the Aggies to a 28-12 Hall of Fame Bowl victory over Iowa State Wednesday at Legion Field.

It was the fourth straight bowl defeat for the Cyclones, who dropped to 8-4 for the second season in a row. Iowa State lost last year in the Peach Bowl to North Carolina State, 24-14, and had fallen previously in the Liberty and Sun Bowls under Johnny Majors, The loss halted a four-game winning streak for Iowa State, which was playing without 10 players three of them starters on defense because of academic ineligibility. The Aggies also finished 8-4 and put a successful finish to a strange season. Coach Tom Wilson took over as head coach after Emory Bellard stepped down after the sixth game of the season. Wilson was an assistant under Bellard.

The Cyclones trailed, 14-6, at halftime, but rallied early in the second half. Boskey Gets Fumble Linebacker Tom Boskey of the Cyclones recovered a fumble by Aggie quarterback Mike Mosley in Aggie territory but Iowa State couldn't take advantage of the break, Johnson failing on a 46-yard field-goal try. But Texas A. and M. soon muffed a scoring chance, too, after an Aggie punt hit Cyclone Cal Jacobs and was recovered by Don Wright at the Iowa State 37.

Dickey gained three yards, then lost wo, and Mike Mosley was the absence of this man could hurt us." Fairbanks denied that one reason he accepted the Colorado job on a verbal basis initially was to begin immediate recruiting. "It's never been my intention to be actively involved in recruiting at this time," he said. "It's not an ego thing with me. We've had a great deal of turmoil. I hope I can bring it together.

One of my fondest ambitions is to bring a championship to -New England." The agreement between Fairbanks and the Sullivans apparently ended a topsy-turvy episode that began with the coach denying he would take the Colorado job, then telling Sullivan he had accepted it early this week. Fairbanks Built Pats After compiling a stunning coaching record at Oklahoma, Fairbanks came to New England in 1973 with the team at a low ebb. He used the college draft to build the squad into a Super Bowl contender that won its first divisional title since 1963 in the old American Football League. Asked why he had denied as recently as last Sunday the persistent reports he had been offered the Colorado job, Fairbanks said: "My statements were not entirely correct. I was placed in a position where there was nothing I could say at that time.

I should have made no comment. I regret making the statements." Later he said: "I came here to find out if I could be successful as a professional coach. It was not necessarily a case of money. I was making (at Oklahoma) somewhere in the neighborhood of what I am now. The Cyclones stormed 96 yards to a touchdown in 16 plays, Dexter Green racing 29 yards into the end zone on a fourth-and-three situation. Iowa State sought to tie the score on a two-point conversion, but Walter Grant's pass was intercepted by Carl Grulich, which left Texas A. and M.

The big play in this drive before Green's run was a 21-yard pass from Grant to Guy Preston. Green Streaks for Score With a first down at the Aggie 36, Grant tossed an incomplete pass, then picked up eight yards on a keeper. Green lost a yard to the 29, then gathered in the pitchout from Grant around left end, quickly darted into the clear and streaked untouched into the end zone.

With 11:00 remaining in the game, Dickey had lugged the ball 30 times for a staggering 247 yards. Before the last game (a 23-3 loss at Miami), the New England Patriots were three victories short of having the best record in all of professional football over the last three years." Asked about the New England situation now compared to when he arrived six years ago, Fairbanks said: "I know they're in a lot better condition today. I have done in my own mind what I set out to do when I came here." Asked about the playoffs, he replied: "The Super Bowl is the ultimate and you have to be very good and lucky to win it. The Oakland Raiders were in the playoffs for nine or 10 years before they won the Super Bowl.

And, in my opinion, the Super Bowl (team) was not their best team." Fairbanks said Colorado approached him first about the coaching job there. However, he declined to say when. On going to Colorado, he said: "There's a lot of things about college work I am looking forward And, because of what has happened in the development of this team, this is a good time to make a change." Fairbanks met with Sullivan for about 40 minutes Wednesday before they held a news conference. Billy Sullivan said that a group of 12 players had urged him in Miami to take Fairbanks back, and a group of four did the same on the team's return home. He indicated veteran linebacker Steve Zabel was a leader in both groups.

"Steve Zabel made a very strong pitch," Sullivan said. "Zabel said he had been in football for 23 years and he wanted a chance at a championship." GOLF BALLS BONUS PACK FOR $13.00 MAC GRE60R JACK NICKLAUS Woods, 8 Irons. NOW 1 34 WltSON $nf Rtg. $175. 3 Woods, 8 Irons.

Kappes, 49, served as the team's coach this season on an interim basis, replacing his boss of two decades, Bill Hess. Hess died last June of cancer. When contacted by The Associated Press Wednesday night, Kappes would neither confirm nor deny his permanent appointment. "I can't say anything," he said. "All I know is they have called a press conference for tomorrow.

A member of the Mid-American Conference school's screening committee, who asked not to be identified, said Kappes was one of the four final candidates. The commitee member said the others were Brian Burke, an assistant coach at Virginia; John Gutekunst, a former Duke coaching assistant, and Sam Timer, the current coach at Allegheny Timer served as an assistant coach in 1977 to Harold McElhaney, named earlier this year as Ohio's athletic director. Former Iowa Coach Bob Commings applied for the job and was at one time thought to be among the leading candidates. Kappes, who played center on Miami of Ohio's 1947 undefeated powerhouse, served as the Bobcats' offensive line coach during his career under Hess. Kappes directed Ohio to a 3-8 record this year.

"At the conclusion of the Patriots' post-season endeavors, he will be the University of Colorado's football coach." The tangle developed Monday when Sullivan suspended Fairbanks hours before a game against the Dolphins in Miami, Fla. Two Patriots assistants, Ron Erhardt and Hank Bullough, were put in charge.

Sullivan said Wednesday the search for a new New England coach will begin after the playoffs. Telegram Clears Way The telegram sent by Fairbanks to Crowder was the move that cleared the way for Fairbanks to return to the NFL team temporarily, as many veterans on the squad desired. The coach, however, made it clear, "I have not rejected the offer from Colorado." He simply told the school he cannot now sign a contract. "We will be happy to have him (Fairbanks) back here to get the team ready for the biggest chapter in the history of the Patriots," said Sullivan. "It is my utmost concern that the club have its best chance to be successful in the playoffs," Fairbanks said.

The agreement enabling Fairbanks to return was negotiated by Russell and Chuck Sullivan, a lawyer and son of the Patriots' owner, in New York. (AP) Coach Chuck Fairbanks will lead the New England Patriots in the National Football League playoffs and then depart for the University of Colorado, the Patriots and Fairbanks agreed Wednesday. "I've fulfilled the job I came here to do," said Fairbanks, who had been suspended by Patriots owner William H. Sullivan Jr. for accepting the Colorado job. Fairbanks, however, had his sus pension lifted when he sent a telegram to Colorado saying he was "not in a position at this time to engage in any further negotiations Sullivan said the team and Fairbanks' lawyer, John C.

Russell, will negotiate an agreement on the remaining four years of Fairbanks' $150,000 per year NFL contract. Hiding Ends Emerging from three days of hiding, a weary Fairbanks told reporters, "I wanted to get back to the college atmosphere. The circle of friends is different. It's a different game." The Patriots will play either Denver or Houston Dec. 31 in the American Conference semifinals after having clinched the AFC East title to cap Fairbanks' six-year pro career.
