Calvin Thomas returned a fumble 76 yards for a touchdown for Coe (11-1). Coe was outgained 418-235, but made up for that gap by forcing six St. John's turnovers.

Ohio State defeats Michigan once again back real well and gaining a lot of yards that way. I have to credit their O-line, too, for making holes. They're just a good team." Central rallied behind a pair of Snead touchdown passes, the first 25 yards to Jarred Lackey and the second a 42-yard fly pattern to Leuschen, bringing Central to within 35-27 with 13:43 to play.

Mary Hardin-Baylor went up 42-27 on a 21-yard pass from LiDarral Bailey to Byron Scott with 9:58 left. Central fought back and drove 74 yards, scoring on Snead's 1-yard run to make it 42-34 with 6:39 left. Then after Van Arkel forced a fumble with 2: 28 left, the Dutch drove 54 yards to get within two points. Then came the conversion attempt, which for a moment looked like a near-certainty. "I saw it open and then I saw it get tipped," Van Arkel said.

"Your stomach just goes up in your throat." Central couldn't run against Mary Hardin-Baylor's defensive line, which held the Dutch's David Zachary to 12 yards on nine carries. So, Central went to the shotgun and Snead either scrambled or threw. He was 16-for-38 passing with 278 yards and four touchdowns and finished with 94 yards rushing. "In the fourth quarter, they made some big plays and some big catches," Mary Hardin-Baylor coach Pete Fredenburg said. "Their quarterback is outstanding.

He's really a good runner. He made some critical third- and fourth-down plays." Central finished a season in which it had an undefeated regular season for the third time in four years and improved from a 6-4 record in the 2008 season. "Ten wins doesn't come easily and doesn't come without being a great team and a great family," Van Arkel said. "We had guys that played their hardest every play. We can look back and still say we're champions, champions of the Iowa Conference." Statistics, Page 10C By DAN JOHNSON dansjohndmreg.com Pella, la.

Central came up a desperate hand short of tying its NCAA Division III football playoff game in Saturday's 42-40 first-round loss to Mary Hardin-Baylor. The Dutch rallied from a 35-14 deficit to get within 42-40 with 28 seconds left on Nate Snead's 5-yard pass to Jordan Leuschen. On the two-point conversion try, Snead rolled out, which drew in Crusaders cornerback Brett Parker and left Leuschen wide open in the end zone. As Snead passed, Parker got his hand up just in time to bat the ball back. Snead grabbed his own pass at the 10, but was swarmed as he tried to scramble.

"Right when I turned around, I saw Jordan Leuschen, and he was wide open," Snead said. "I was getting ready to throw and out of nowhere someone got right in my face and tipped it. It happened so fast, it was just a bang-bang play." Central (10-1), ranked fifth nationally, still had a glimmer of life after recovering the onside kick, but kicker Jake Viggers was ruled offsides because his plant foot was past the 30-yard line. Forced to kick again, No. 9 Mary Hardin-Baylor (10-1) recovered to clinch the victory.

"The hardest thing about this game is we don't get to be together any more," Central coach Jeff McMar-tin said. "These kids love each other. It's like a family. We've had 11 awesome weeks. It's hard, because they're a great group." For three quarters, Mary Hardin-Baylor controlled the game with its running game.

The Crusaders finished with 327 yards rushing against a defense that had been permitting 70 rushing yards per game. The Crusaders went up 35-14 following Quincy Daniels' 2-yard run with 5: 22 left in the third quarter. "They just have weapons everywhere," Central linebacker Zach Van Arkel said. "Never bet against emotion," said Salem, a record-setting pass-catcher who had nine receptions for 74 yards. "Never." The Redbirds took a knee rather than attempt to convert the extra point, guarding against the potential for a blocked kick, or other last-gasp miracle. For good reason. The Panthers (7-4, 5-3) rallied in the final 5:12 to take a 20-16 lead on touchdown catches by Jarred Herring and Schuylar Oordt both coming from Zach Davis, who replaced injured Pat Grace after he sustained an apparent concussion in the second quarter. Oordt's 36-yard touchdown came with 44 seconds left.

"I was pretty excited because I thought we had the win," said Davis, who passed for 130 of his 189 yards in the second half. "But 42 seconds is a long time, obviously." Three of Northern Iowa's four interceptions came in the first half. "We're gonna come back a a new team. I'm not going to let this happen again." Michigan's flop followed a school-record nine-loss year in Rodriguez's debut in Ann Arbor. "I'm tired of being humbled," Rodriguez said.

One, thrown by a heavily-pressured Grace, was tipped into the hands of the Redbirds' Chris Garrett, who cradled it, steadied himself and jetted 32 yards to put his team up 10-0 in the first quarter. "I thought I'd stepped out of bounds," Garrett said. The Panthers also produced momentum-turning efforts, such as Quentin Scott's blocked punt that set up a Billy Hallgren field goal, and his interception that prefaced a drive to the 1-yard line. But UNI, down 16-6 with 8:52 left, went for it on fourth and 1 and Derrick Law met a wall of defenders at the 2. Northern Iowa defensive end James Ruffin stood numbly on the sideline, managing a slight hug for an admiring and jubilant Illinois State rival. The standout fifth-year senior's college career likely over, he finally strode toward the locker room, reeling from a split-second 22-20 loss before a crowd of 6,287 at Hancock Stadium. "I'm still in shock," said Ruffin, who saw the Red-birds drive 59 yards in 39 seconds to clip the No.

9 Panthers, almost certainly dousing hopes for an NCAA Football Championship Subdivision playoff berth. "It doesn't feel like it's over, but you know it is." Illinois State (6-5, 5-3 Missouri Valley) celebrated with six-tenths of a second left after true freshman quarterback Matt Lancaster pressed into duty when redshirt freshman Matt Brown sustained a knee injury in the second quarter connected on an 8-yard scoring pass to i. Special to the Register Indianapolis, Ind. David Lang nailed a 27-yard field goal with 1 second left Saturday to hoist Butler to a 20-17 victory over Drake and send the team to the Gridiron Classic. The win also meant Butler (10-1, 7-1 Pioneer League) will share the conference title with Dayton, which also finished 7-1 in the league after defeating Marist 27-16 at home Saturday.

Butler drove 40 yards in seven plays in the final 42 seconds to set up the field goal try. Drake (8-3, 6-2) tied the game with approximately 10 minutes left when Mike Piatkowski threw a 53-yard pass to Joey Orlando. That followed a touchdown toss by Butler quarterback Andrew Huck to Zach Watkins. Jordan Koopman helped Butler with an 18-yard touchdown run in the third. Lang hit his first field goal in the first half.

Pat Cashmore had a 7-yard scoring run for Drake, and Brandon Wubs kicked a 23-yard field goal. Butler earned the chance to represent the Pioneer League in the Gridiron game by beating Dayton earlier in the season. Piatkowski completed 17-of-29 passes for 166 yards and a touchdown but was intercepted three times. The Bulldogs dropped their final two contests, to Dayton at home last week and to Butler. Piatkowski also added 43 rushing yards for Drake, which was limited to 83 rushing yards.

Huck completed 24-of-35 passes for 234 yards, with 109 of that going to Watkins. Scott Gray gained 69 yards on 15 carries to pace the rushing attack of Butler, which gained 115 yards.
