(AP) -Officials at St. Elizabeth's Hospital said Friday they were investigating an operating room mix-up in which a 2-year-old boy named Bryan and a 4-year-old boy named Ryan received surgery meant for each other. On May 29, Bryan Christ, who needed a tonsillectomy, was wheeled into the operating room and had his urinary tract enlarged. That procedure had been intended for 4-year-old Ryan Schrader, who instead had his tonsils and adenoids removed.

Hospital spokesman Michael Bader on Friday confirmed the mix-up, but declined to comment on any possible cause. Both doctors who performed the surgery also refused comment. In a similar case in Philadelphia last March, two women at Graduate Hospital underwent at least partial operations for each others' maladies. Doth "Doing Well" Bader said both youngsters had been released from the hospital, "and are reportedly doing quite well." Roberta Christ, Bryan's mother, said hospital officials told her "the opertion Bryan had by mistake won't cause him any problems." But Dr. Jean Lockhart, director of the public health services and government affairs department of the American Academy of Pediatrics in Chicago, said: "Anything that is not necessary should not be done that's reason enough.

It is anticipated that the transaction, which is subject to approval of the Federal Communications Commission, will be completed in 1981, according to a news release. To facilitate compliance with the FCCs rules of ownership and location of stations, Cosmos will sell one radio station and three television stations upon completion of the transaction. Orion currently owns television stations WAVE-TV in Louisville, WFIE-TV in Evansville, WMT-TV in Cedar Rapids; and WFRV-TV in Green Bay, and its satellite station, WJMN-TV in Escanaba, Mich. It also owns radio stations WAVE-AM in Louisville and WMT-AM and FM in Cedar Rapids. Cosmos operates four VHF Network-affiliated stations and two radio stations.

The television stations are WIST-TV In Columbia, S.C; WSFA-TV in Montgomery, WTOL-TV in Toledo, Ohio; and WDSU-TV in New Orleans, La. The radio stations are W1S-AM in Columbia and WSRZ-FM in Sarasota, Fla. When the transaction is completed Cosmos will sell WMT-TV, WFRV-TV and its satellite, WJMN-TV, and WAVE-AM radio. Pharmacists have lost respect by ignoring patients' "important needs for human contact and concern," lamented William S. Apple, president of the American Pharmaceutical Association. "Many patients no longer consider the pharmacist a potential source of information even about drugs," he told the Iowa Pharmacists Association's centennial meeting in Des Moines. "To many patients, pharmacy has become at best a distant profession" and the white-coated person behind the counter often resembles "an inanimate object a human vending machine," he said.

"Patient contact and personal involvement," he said, can satisfy clients that the price of a prescription also buys them an expert's "knowledge being used for their benefit" Heightened consumerism, growing government regulation and an increasing oversupply of pharmacists could doom the cold and distant druggist, he said. He noted that early pharmacists enjoyed high respect when their trade was little more than "a combination of faith healing, a lot of talking and a bunch of herbs." Another speaker, Lewis A. Engman, president of the Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association, said Americans are becoming more and more conscious of health and thus are demanding "a role in decisions affecting their health." "A generation ago, the public wasn't interested in the ingredients of what they ate, let alone what went Into prescriptions," but today there is "a deep reserve of a latent demand for information from those who will give it," he said. Engman endorsed Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Jere Goyan's advice that pharmacists supplement the information that patients get from doctors, make sure that people understand the drugs they use and even help educate people about drug abuse problems. "Assuming a larger role in patient counseling can ensure a larger role for yourself in the health care of the future," said Engman.

"The future of pharmacy, like the future of the pharmaceutical manufacturing industry, must depend on the value to the public of the products and services which we provide." Engman, a former chairman of the Federal Trade Commission, said government control and even drugs from computerized vending machines are possible outcomes of the current turmoil over health care costs.
