IOWA LIFE The Des Moines Register GC Page 2E Tuesday, December 3, 2002 Bono crosses Iowa to aid Africa Latinas help each other out of abusive situations Heart of America Tour Bono, lead singer of the band U2, and actress Ashley Judd are crossing seven states this week on behalf of need in Africa. RODNEY WHITETHE REGISTER Autograph: Before leaving the Iowa Harvest Diner in Menlo, Bono signed the guest book "Bono, Dublin, Ireland The Milky Way." BONO, from Page 1E than ever. The band has sold more than 100 million albums and won 14 Grammys. It was formed by four Dublin lads who could barely play their instruments guitarist the Edge, bassist Adam Clayton and drummer Larry Mullen Jr. in addition to Bono but now rules the world.

U2 nearly equals the mass appeal of the Rolling Stones on tour and yet also still scores hit singles around the globe with its new songs. Bono himself is plain ubiquitous. This fall he appeared onstage with the Stones in Chicago as well as with Bruce Springsteen in Miami. This past weekend alone he was featured three times on prime-time TV: in a tribute to Elvis Presley, in an hour's worth of highlights of U2's concert last year at Slane Castle in Dublin and on Larry King's CNN talk show to announce this week's Heart of America tour. In February the Recording Academy, the music industry organization that doles out Grammy Awards each year, will honor him as its MusiCares Person of the Year for his yeoman humanitarian work.

Bono caught the humanitarian bug in the '80s. He was little surreptitious. A Tupperware Party in someone's home might become an opportunity to spread the word. A session on immigrant rights offers a chance to leave pamphlets. Afterward the calls start flowing.

One day last week, a woman came in enticed by the poinsettia giveaway, and ended up behind closed doors for an hour with a counselor. "We're very good at prying," Arriaga said. "We assure the women, There is nothing you can say that we havent Besides individual and group counseling, the center offers English and computer classes and helps clients with housing, jobs, visas and child care. It has a clothes closet and a food pantry. Some victims choose to stay with their abusers.

"Once they leave the home, that's the hardest thing for a Latina to do," Arriaga said. "It's like you're saying, 'I don't want a family Some women's lives are in danger if they leave. "We make sure they have a safety plan." It's not good news when anyone suffers at the hands of a loved one. Nor is it any secret that people in all communities do. But by empowering its own members, especially its victims to take the lead, this community is providing solutions.

And that's real progress. Rekha Basu's column appears Tuesdays and Thursdays In lowalf'f and Sundays in Opinion. She can be reached at rbasudmreg.com or (515) 284-8584. BASU, from Page 1E even more significant is that there's now a full-time organization for Latina victims of sexual and domestic violence to spread the word. It's called LUNA, which in English stands for Latinas United for a New Dawn, and started out as a pilot project of the Iowa Coalition Against Domestic Violence in 1999.

There, it was run by a young attorney named Sonia Parras Kon-rad, who negotiated the recent multimillion dollar settlement between DeCoster Farms and Latina employees alleging rape by their managers. Run on federal and state grants, LUNA last year served 178 people. As of October, it has its own office and a paid staff of three. It's open 12 hours a day and operates a 24-hour hotline (866-256-7668). Its real power, said current director Delia Arriaga, is the net work of 23 trained volunteers, many themselves violence survi vors Uke Cnstina I revino.

It was former victims who first got to gether and got trained to help others. The first challenge is to make the women aware that battery is illegal and unacceptable. "It's ingrained," Arriaga says. "'He's your hus band. You made him upset.

It OK to The volunteers have a unique entry point because they live in the community. But they have to be a Chicago's Lyric, which posted 14 consecutive years of sold-out houses, is averaging 94 percent of its seats filled so far for each event. William Mason, the Lyric's general director, said he has taken some heat from devoted fans. "I'm grateful for their passion, but they're not any more disappointed than I am to have to do it," he said. "It's basic economics.

It's an among the star-studded lineup enlisted in 1984 by Bob Geldof (of English band the Boomtown Rats) to record the song "Do They Know It's to combat African famine under the Band Aid moniker. The following year, U2 performed in front of 70,000 people in London as part of Geldof's Live Aid concert. The band's early songs were similarly earnest and political, featuring anthems like the lament over Irish bloodshed "Sunday Bloody Sunday" and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. tribute "Pride (In the Name of Love)." Yet as Bono the crusader asserted himself in the '90s, U2 revived its career by dumping earnest anthems in favor of irony, glam and electronic orchestras are facing financial crunches, reflected in less-than-brisk box-office sales, delayed ticket purchases, declines in subscriptions and fund-raising, and curtailed programs.

Indeed, the "Zoo TV" tour that stopped in Ames in 1992 was an orgy of video screens, props and special effects that grossed $67 million to rate the year's biggest concert draw. The band's second and most recent career revival returned to its old-fashioned guitar rock of the '80s. The album "All That You Can't Leave Behind" in 2000 was followed by yet another year in which U2 staged the most successful concert tour, without as many special effects. Met spokesman Francois Giuliani agreed, "The box office has been somewhat soft probably because of the economic situation and the effect it has had on tourism." The Met also had to write off a $4 million pledge when philanthropist Alberto Vilar failed to deliver.

If the therapy succeeded, who would Tony be? "It raised questions about human nature and morality," Ramis says of the article. "Not just for The Sopranos' or our movie, but for society in general. Can the criminal mind be turned? Can people change? It's a fundamental question every therapist must ask. "So I thought, all right, if Paul Vitti got out of jail" which is where he was left at the end of the previous film "and committed himself to going straight, what kind of person would he become and what kind of life would he lead? And I loved the idea." Crystal and De Niro liked it, too, and a script was commissioned that Crystal says "got us of on the right foot." Ramis then did a rewrite that had Vitti getting a job as a consultant to a le series.

Crystal, of course, added his un-credited two or three cents, including some physical shtick in an exclusive Japanese restaurant that has left preview audiences howling. Since the release of the first film, "The Sopranos" has become a cultural phenomenon, something that initially spooked Ramis and Crystal. "We had such a good time making the first one that Bob and I were interested in working together again, but not just for the sake of doing a sequel," Crystal says.
