Well, so far, so good. But one has to take the bitter with the better in the modern floral arrangements. At other times, It is a white "gravel." But it is a plastic gravel that one can crush in his fingers or, alas, under his heel if it gets on the floor. With such a solid base as these materials form, it is easy to make a flower arrangement that would etun the late L. Burbank. Only then does she discover that this florist mica and ersatz gravel has an affinity for wall-to-wall carpeting. No bug-in-a-rug ever snuggled more contentedly or determinedly into its Wilton than this floral goo. It cannot be coaxed up with hand-sweeper or vacuum. It is very choosy stuff. It must be picked up by hand, piece by piece.

When this has been done, the house tidied up and put to rights, what has happened? Why, the flowers hax'e wilted, natch! By the time the florist has filled the vase with goo and then stuffed in all the flowers the law will allow, there is room in the container for only a shot-glass of water. Better still, to be on the safe side, the canny housewife will fill the receptacle with an eyedropper. Then, if she wants to keep the bouquet alive for 24 hours, she will sit in constant attendance, eyedropper in hand to be ready for instant-resuscitation. Even so, she cannot stave off dehydration. Just give me back that old-fashioned box of flowers.
