Kansas City keeps Sox from breaking .500 SALE FROM PAGE 1C For Clement, the purchase brings him back to his roots. "I was born and raised here, graduated from Newton High School. I'm the oldest of a family of six boys and a girl, and I'm really glad to be back home," he said. "It really is extra special, owning a track in Newton.

I think it has been a bright star with the economy like it's been. And this track taking over basically right in the middle of a recession, and booming like it has. I think that says a lot about the management and the quality of the racing." Clement said the speedway's staff will remain intact, and that the fans should see no difference in their race-day experiences. The next event at the speedway is a NASCAR Camping World Trucks race on July 16. Messages from The Des Moines Register about a possible sale of the facility were not returned last week.

The speedway has seen major growth, as witnessed by nationally televised races in IndyCar and NASCAR's Nationwide Series which will run two races in Newton this year. There also have been talks about a possible IndyCar doubleheader race weekend next season. Season tickets at the speedway have grown as well, jumping from 5,300 in 2008 to nearly 20,000 by 2009. Stan Clement has been around for all of it. It was Conrad Clement who introduced his brother to Wallace a decade ago, and that meeting spawned the planning that resulted in the 's-mile oval's opening in 2006.

Stan Clement said he never envisioned at that time that one day he would be a primary owner of the track. He has served as its CEO. "With the five-year plan and the way it worked out with the Manatt family, of course we were interested in it, and we're thrilled to be here," Stan Clement said. Terms of the sale were not released. Built on 226 acres of farmland, the track had an assessed value of $44 million as of June 2009.

The original estimate of the track's worth when it was built was $70 million. The speedway was lauded as a needed financial shot in the arm for Newton, a city of about 15,000 then dealing with the loss of manufacturer Maytag. "We've talked about it for over a year maybe over two years," Wallace, a former NASCAR star and current ESPN analyst, said of the deal. "Finally, when the opportunity came the Clements and myself wanted to take ownership. We've given our danged heart and soul to this thing." Bryct Millar contributed to this report.

U.S. District Judge Reggie Walton said at a hearing Tuesday that statements from former Yankees Andy Pettite, Chuck Knoblauch and Mike Stanton that they received injections of performance-enhancing drugs from the trainer, Brian McNamee, could unfairly influence jurors.

The judge also warned of a possible delay in the trial that is set to begin today, concerning the inability to obtain the audio of Clemens' deposition to House investigators in 2008. Clemens is charged with six felony counts, including perjury, false statements and obstruction of Congress, which carry a maximum sentence of up to 30 years in prison and a $1.5 million fine. Yankees closer Mariano Rivera missed his second straight game because of a sore right arm muscle. Capps gave up a homer to B.J. Upton and a base hit to Casey Kotchman to draw boos from the home crowd. He walked Kelly Shoppach with two outs, forcing manager Ron Gar-denhire to pull him. "I don't blame them," said Capps, who never ducks the media after a tough outing. "I haven't been very good.

I'd boo me, too." Scott Baker gave up one unearned run on three hits with three strikeouts for the Twins before leaving after five innings with a mild right elbow strain. 1MB day night.
