The volunteers learned to be caretakers by feeding, bathing and tending to personal needs of the campers. "I've never sprinted so much in my life," said AmeriCorps member Andrea Meyers, 24, of Buffalo, N.Y. She took to a young camper who liked to flee sporadically. "I think it's definitely the most challenging project I've had," Meyers said. It was also her most rewarding project, she said.

She cited special moments, like when she saw some campers helping others brush their CAMP, from Page 1 or put on shoes. AmeriCorps Team Friends help woman fight cancer Recognizing excellence: Two Carlisle police officers have been recognized for their work by the American Police Hall of Fame in Miami.

Former officer Casey Dunn, who now works in Conway, was credited with saving the life of a Carlisle-area man on Nov. 4. Anthony Sadler, 24, fell backwards off his bar stool at the VFW Tavern and hit his head. Dunn responded to the incident thinking there had been a fight. He found bar patrons vainly attempting to revive Sadler.

The patrons planned to take Sadler home. Dunn insisted Sadler needed medical attention. Sadler went into cardiac arrest later at Mercy Medical Center and was revived by hospital staff. The Miami organization also awarded certificates to Sgt. Scott Gries for seven years of honorable service on the department and for his work with the community's DARE program.

Police Chief Ron Fox, who applied for the awards, presented them at last week's Carlisle City Council meeting. Carlisle identity: Carlisle city leaders know growth will come to their small town with the completion of the Iowa Highway 5 bypass. The question is how to manage that growth without losing the community's charm. City Councilwoman Ruth Randleman is one of the community leaders working to develop a master plan for Carlisle. "We're working to define our image," she said.

Portion of park to receive new name PARK, from Page 1 baseball diamonds and a swimming pool where four of Wilson's seven great-grandchildren play. During his 17 years on the park board, Wilson also helped hire the first full-time supervisor, developed Fairmeadows and Lions parks and helped to acquire land for Raccoon River Park. One of Wilson's grandchildren, Steve Wilson II, requested last fall that a park be named for his grandfather. Park board members agreed that was an appropriate way to honor Wilson's work. Just one other West Des Moines park, Pearson Park, is named for a person.

Dale Pearson served on the parks board alongside Wilson. "It's extremely difficult to have a park named after an individual in the city of West Des Moines," said Gary Scott, parks and recreation director. "When parks are named after individuals, it's not because someone paid a large sum of money. Mr. Wilson was instrumental in getting Holiday Park purchased in the 1950s.

We wanted to honor him in some way." A dedication ceremony for Wilson Park will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the park. Carlisle knows it can't compete with Des Moines for large retail or service businesses. Carlisle's goal is to provide something different with specialty and antique stores.
