(UPI) Don Zimmer, beginning his first full season as Boston Red Sox manager, is not concerned with the seemingly vast offseason improvements made by the defending American League East champion New York Yankees. Nor is Zimmer worried too much about his uncertain pitching staff. What is most important to Zimmer is for the Red Sox to get off to a good something they didn't do as defending AL champs a year ago. By early May they were 6-15 and never fully recovered. "We can't let the Yankees do what they did last away from the rest of the league by early June," said Zimmer.

'Nobody ever made a race of it. I don't think we were mentally prepared last spring. We were too overconfident." The Red Sox, who figure to give the Yankees the best run of all the AL East clubs this year, return most of the starting cast which won the 1975 AL pennant and lost to the Cincinnati Reds in seven games that season. At 38, Carl Yastrzemski, titular leader of the club, is coming off one of his best years (102 RBI), while catcher Carlton Fisk (.255,17 homers), center fielder Fred Lynn (.314, 10 homers) and shortstop Rick Burleson (.291) are being counted on to play up to par all year long now that their contract disputes with the front office have been settled. QUIZ MAURICE PICHARP WON HIS ONW M.V.R JWARO IN 1947.

WHO-WON. THAT HONOR IN 1916 A. PHIL ESPOSITO 9. BOBBY ORR BOBBY CLARKE In addition, the Red Sox reacquired slugging first baseman George Scott (18 homers, 77 RBI) in a trade with the Milwaukee Brewers over the winter and signed relief ace Bill Campbell in the free agent sweepstakes. "No question with Reggie Jackson and Don Gullett, the Yankees are a much improved ball club," said Zimmer, '''but we feel with Scott and Campbell we've improved greatly, too." Zimmer's big problem, assuming his hitters all have typical seasons, will be the starting pitching where aging ace Luis Tiant (21-12) is closing in on 37; workhorse Ferguson Jenkins (12-11) is coming of Achilles heel surgery; southpaw Bill Lee has had shoulder problems and Reggie Cleveland and Rick Wise are considered "iffy" each year.

There has been talk about an effort to land left-hander Vida Blue from the depleted Oakland A's, but unless, that happens, Zimmer has a lot of uncertainties on his mound staff, while his chief rivals, the Yankees, are deepest in that same department. STRENGTHS: In Lynn, Fisk, Yastrzemski, Scott and Jim Rice, the Red Sox present as potent a middle batting order as any opposing pitcher will face in either league. Campbell, Jim Willoughby and possibly rookie Bob Stanley look like a strong bullpen which will see a lot of activity this year. Excellent defense at every position but second and third. WEAKNESSES: A most uncertain starting rotation.

Big question at third base where the still unpro.ven Butch Hobson experienced sore arm woes in spring training. Denny Doyle and Doug Griffin likely to platoon at second although neither has proved to be the answer to Bosox brass. NEW FACES: Campbell will help major disaster area in Fenway Park last year; Scott adds to an already awesome offense; rookie pitchers Rob Stanley and Jim Vosk given good chance to stick as relievers and Don Aase has outside shot at landing starting berth. OUTLOOK: Unless the pitching situation crystalizes rapidly, Red Sox can not expect to overhaul the A strong second place finish is more likely. In other action, St.

Gregory's, but the league leaders countered with balance, led by Rich Collins with 18. Bill Sprecher (16), Jim Sprecher (15) and Kim Wolfe (14) helped out. Hebron held St. James to 24 points in the second half, and got a 21-point night from Ace Yiengst plus 18 from Steve Bates. St.

James' Clayt Shuey topped everyone with 26. St. Mary's topped Hebron's defensive effort, limiting the Brethren to 19 points in their second half. Scot Clentimack (18) nipped the Brethren's Jeff Good (17) for game honors. Joe Bankes scored 15 points for Bethany, which also placed three other men in double figures for its fourth win of the year.

Steve Wolfe tallied IS to pace Trinity Lutheran. Steve Progin and Kevin Boyer split 24 points evenly, helping Quentin to a hard- earned victory. Denny Frey was St. Gertrude's only double- figure scorer, with 10 points. ALARM 1-4002 PROTECT YOUR VEHICLE and a Keyless Horn Alarm! ATLANTA (UPI) Marquette's Al McGuire closes out his coaching career this weekend at the NCAA basketball finals, but says the only thing bothering him about it is the high price they're charging for tickets here. "I really believe an amateur event should not be charging $14 a seat," said McGuire.

"That's the only hangup I have about going to Atlanta." The fans had to buy tickets for all four games (two sessions) at a cost of $28. That was last spring. Now, that price looks like a real bargain because scalpers are asking, and getting, up to $375 a ticket. Saturday's semifinals pair Wth-ranked Marquette (23-7) vs. unranked UNC-Charlotte (28-3) at 2:15 p.m.

EST and third-ranked North Carolina (27-4) vs. sixth-ranked Nevada- Las Vegas (28-2) at 4:15. A consolation game between Saturday's losers will be played Monday at 5:35 p.m. with the championship game at 8:15. All four teams get their first look at the Omni Friday afternoon.

Marquette will practice there at 1 p.m. EST, Las Vegas at 2, UNC-Charlotte at 3, and North Carolina at 4. McGuire, who has coached for 13 seasons at Marquette after spending seven years at Belmont Abbey in Charlotte, N.C., said he tried to retire earlier. "You can't have a lame duck season," he said. "I didn't want to coach this year.

I wanted (Assistant Hank) Raymond to coach and let me be athletic director. But, it just didn't work out. "I have no special feeling about retiring. It's been a nice run." McGuire, North Carolina Coach Dean Smith, UNC- Charlotte Coach Lee Rose and Las Vegas Coach Jerry Tarka- nian took part Wednesday in a telephone news conference. "I felt that 20, maybe 25 of the team's that picked for the NCAA playoffs had a chance to make it to the final four," said Tarka- nian.

"No one team dominated college basketball this year like Indiana did last year. this year like Indiana did last year. "However, I did figure (top- ranked) Michigan or Tennessee would win in the Mideast. Charlotte was the biggest surprise. But not really, they have a good basketball team." McGuire says Charlotte's strong point "has been its underdog attitude.

Their one-for- all approach is a great asset. The four teams in this thing are all on the upswing, we're all ready. Charlotte exposed itself when it went to the finals against Kentucky last year in the NIT." North Carolina is going into Saturday's semifinals in the poorest physical shape. Larry Harris of Pitt won the scoring championship with a 22.9 point per game average; Jim Town of Massachusetts was named the rebounding champion; Maurice Robinson of West Virginia was honored for having the best field goal percentage; Bog Muggins of WVU for having the best free throw percentage, and Ed Jordan of Rutgers was the assist leader. Town pulled down an average of 11.3 rebounds per game, compared to 10i9 per game by runnerup Jim Bailey of Rutgers. Robinson came on strong in the last half of the season to capture the field goal percentage title with a .558 mark. Huggins wound up with a free throw shooting percentage of .844, wel! ahead of teammate Russell Chapman, who had an .831 percentage. Jordan led in assists the entire year and finished with an average of 7.2 per game.

Duquesne's Norm Nixon, who was second in scoring with a 22 per game average, was runnerup in assists with 5.9 per game. Massachusetts captured the rebounding and field goal team titles, Rutgers won the scoring championship with an average of 83.2 points per game and Villanova won the free throw Tom LaGarde is out with a knee injury, second-team All- America guard Phil Ford has an injured elbow, and forward Walt Davis has a broken finger on his shooting hand. Ford was to practice today in Chapel Hill, N.C., for the first time since last Saturday when he sat out most of the second half in North Carolina's victory over Kentucky in the East Re- gionals. Davis is playing with his finger in a splint. "Phil says his elbow is three times as good as it was Sunday," said Smith.

"We would expect Phil to play Saturday. There is no undue swelling, but that is not as good as new." As for Davis, Smith said, "I can't say he's 100 percent when he has broken right index finger with three screws in there to hold it in place. But, even when he's not 100 percent, he's still a fine ballplayer." Robert Smith, Las Vegas' playmaking guard, played with a 102 degree temperature in the Midwest finals Saturday and was hospitalized when he got home. He was expected to return to practice today and be ready for Saturday's game. Rose said UNCC wasn't doing anything special to get ready for Marquette, "because we don't really know what Al McGuire has planned for us.

The last time I saw his team play, it used 11 different defenses." Tarkanian was asked Wednesday if the recent disclosure Nevada-Las Vegas was under NCAA investigation may have been timed to hurt the Rebels' chances in the basketball playoffs. "I've got a lot of thoughts on that," he said, "but, it's best! don't express any of them. I don't think it will affect our play." McGuire said playing a tougher schedule than the other semifinalists should help Marquette and North Carolina. "It makes a team tournament hard. It might give Dean's team and our team an edge." Smith agreed, in part.

"A tough schedule should help you if you are not emotionally drained." Maybe it's the look neat, yet somehow primitive. Maybe its the rich, green color one of my favorites. All I know is that the fast-starting Pennfine and superlative fine-textured Kentucky bluegrasses in this top-of-the-line mixture combine in a way that's totally irresistible.
