"To have something of this magnitude come to central Iowa is a victory," said Dennis "DJ." Julius, a Qty Council member. The complex will have a 's-mile asphalt track modeled after the best in the nation, said Paul Schlaack, chairman, CEO and president of The U.S.

MotorSport between well-known raceways in Kansas City, and Joliet, 111. He said he also picked the city because of its people. "I dont see the motor-sport complex as a Newton motor-sport complex," Schlaack said. "I see it really for the state of Iowa. It is really a way for me to pay back the state for all the good things that have happened to me." Schlaack wouldn't build the racetrack unless he had a unanimous vote from the council.

The council's first vote on Monday was 5-1. By Wednesday, Councilman Michael Mueller had changed his vote to yes after more than 100 residents rallied at the special meeting. "It was just electric," said Jane Cotton, a Qty Council member. "This is a tremendous opportunity for Newton." "It was a huge day for Newton," Julius said. Council members said the first races could be held as soon as summer 2004.

Built on 200 acres, the complex will have 25,000 permanent seats and the capacity to add another 10,000, he said. The complex could offer different types of races such as stock cars, open wheel and trucks. Other entertainment could be offered as well, said Schlaack, 56. "It can provide great opportunity for all Iowans," he said.

"I am very excited about bringing talent and concerts to the facility Schlaack said he chose Newton because it is almost halfway IOWA LUTHERAN HOSPITAL BRYANT Michelle of Des Moines, a son, Monday. If things go as planned, he'll transfer their shares back to the boys when they officially become men. "That's what we're counting on," Adam said. "Until then we're back to being servers." Mere worker bees.

From humble employees to masters of their universe back to humble employees again. The state, Adam told me, was HANSEN, from Page 1B misunderstanding. Last week Adam and Luke shut down the Fireside Grille for an entire afternoon while they met with their lawyer and figured out what to do next. It was decided they would withdraw their purchase and reorganize the corporation. A third owner, a silent partner in his 40s a card-carrying adult is now the slightly embarrassed by the oversight, but didnt think it was time to fire up the electric chair.

Even though the boys had technically become bootleggers, according to Walding, they probably won't go to jail or even to their rooms. "It seemed to be an honest mistake," Walding said. That was apparent from the moment the boys agreed to be interviewed for the column. They figured it would be good for business, not a showstopper. "The lesson here," Walding said, "is that before you go into business, you should check all the rules and regulations.

The liquor business is heavily regulated. It's not like opening an ice cream stand." Despite the setback, the world still seems like an ice cream stand to Adam and Luke. Dudes, I didn't mean to get you in trouble. "Oh, don't worry about it," Adam said. "We're still hanging out, having a blast.

Oh, man, we're busy. Real busy." You arent upset about losing your store, at least for now? "Nah, it doesn't bother us at all." That's the entrepreneurial spirit. Still, if there's another lesson here it's this: Talk to a reporter at your own risk. You only think you have nothing to hide.
