Unconfirmed reports indicated Lasoski Lasoski broke ribs and bruised a lung. He reportedly was unconscious for more than five minutes, but regained consciousness and was alert while being transported to the hospital. With 78 feature wins and seven track championships, Lasoski is the most successful driver in Knoxville history. He was leading the Outlaws points standings after winning Thursday's preliminary feature. Wallace held off a midrace challenge from Ron Ver Beek and won the modified feature over Bill Davis Jr.

and Dave Farren Jr. Jackson encountered a run from his closest competitor in points, Don Killen, to win the stock-car feature and championship. Bret Moyer beat Allen in the feature NDTRA trucks, but Allen clinched the championship over Moyer. Bill Bonnett passed Rick Gladson on the last lap of the feature for hobby stocks, but Gladson still won the championship. Initially, drivers in the first two rows of the feature races were supposed to have been given the opportunity to start from the tail.

Winning from that position would have been worth double the usual purse. However, due to the threat of rain, all features were started in order of points standings. Weekly races end each year prior to the Iowa State Fair. However, the next race at the fairgrounds' half-mile track will be an IMCA Deery Brothers Summer Series race Aug. 12.

Elliott's Dodge sped around the 214-mile triangular-shaped track in 52.765 seconds, posting a fast lap of 170.568 mph. That was far short of Tony Stewart's two-year-old track record of 172.391. ft.

By RICK BROWN REGISTER STAFF WRITER Silvis, 111. The heat is on, and Jerry Smith knows it. "I'm trying not to think too much about that," Smith said. With two-thirds of the 2002 PGA Tour season in the books, the former Oskaloosa, resident needs a strong finish to keep his tour card. Last season, Smith came into the John Deere Classic in the same position.

He finished in a tie for 10th, made two more top-10 finishes and secured his card for this season. Smith is back at the TPC at Deere Run trying to repeat his late-season production. He rallied from a double-bogey 6 on the 4th hole with four birdies for a second-round 69 Friday and a 36-hole total of 7-under-par 135. He is tied for 28th. "I hope this can be a springboard for the rest of the year," Smith said.

J.P. Hayes, who shot a course-record 61 that also tied the tournament record, and Fred Funk share the lead at 14-under-par 128. Thoughts of shooting 59 crossed Hayes's mind while he stood on the 16th tee. "I knew I had to finish birdie, eagle, birdie," Hayes said. "I bird-ied 16 and thought, 'Here we Sprint i Hot move within a stroke of the lead for the way I played," Smith said.

"Last year, it seemed like I had a little more confidence in the way I was hitting the ball when I came here. This year, IVe been searching for my swing." Smith tied for fifth in his third event this season, the Pebble Beach Pro-Am. He won $146,000 there, but has added just $57,167 in the 18 tournaments since. His best finish since Pebble Beach had been a tie for 60th at the Tucson Open. Smith had won just $124,557 coming into the John Deere Classic last season, but collected more than $60,000 in four separate events.

He tied for third in the National Car Rental Disney Classic, tied for eighth at the Air Canada Championship and tied for 11th in the Texas Open. He finished 85th on the money list with earnings of $592,030. "I know if I can get to that point where I can just play my game and trust what I'm doing, I can compete out here," Smith said. "I've shown that enough times." Smith's play this weekend will be buoyed by the presence of his family and friends. "I love playing in front of people I know," Smith said.

"It's always nice to have people cheering for you, whether it's going good or not so good." Iowa amateur Cade Pleggenkuhle of Clear Lake has ia three-shot lead in the 1 00th Iowa Amateur golf championship after shooting a 1-under-par 71 Friday at Spirit Hollow golf course in Burlington. Me opened with a 70. Sam Billmeyer of Ankeny, who also shot 71 Friday, is second at 144. Scott Briggs is alone in third after a second-round 70 left him at 145. Hayes' chance disappeared when he shot a par 5 on the 17th. But he rolled in a 15-footer for birdie on the final hole to grab a share of the lead. Northern Iowa golf coach John Bermel made dramatic improvement Friday, but not the cut.

Bermel shot a second-round 68 after opening with 77. Cedar Rapids, pro Scott Brauer shot 67 after opening with a 74. Also missing the cut were Cedar Rapids pro Zach Johnson (74-72), Kevin DeNike of Davenport (78-71), Mike Evans of Peosta (78-77), former Iowa golfer Guy Boros (69-71) and Walcott amateur Kyle Hougham (74-82). In stoppage time, Raji Ananda's shot on goal was stopped by Pogue and Gibson hit the left post.

"It was a relief (to get the lead), but at the same time, they had some chances," Noonan said. Mid-Michigan allowed 36 goals in the regular season, the most of any team in the PDL playoffs. The Menace entered the match as the highest-scoring team in the league and with the PDL's top scorer, To-mas Boltnar. The scenario appeared to favor Des Moines, but the Bucks squelched any thought the Menace had of getting back in the match. The Bucks scored two goals within a three-minute span in the second half.

One was by Noonan, and the other was by Ryan Mack in the 69th minute. "This was a great win for us," Noonan said. "They were a strong team and had a lot of chances. Fortunately we kept them out of the net. "Any time a team is undefeated you want to knock them off." St.

Nicholas Benjamin came off the bench and scored the Menace's lone goal of the match in the 78th minute, his third of the season. Des Moines left the match with a slight shots on goal advantage, 21-18, including two in the final minutes of the match. "St. Nick sparked us," Calloway said. But time expired on the Menace's ninth season the most successful in the club's history.

"The guys have done a fantastic job," Calloway said. "I hope they remember this for the rest of their lives."
