WEBB CITY DAILY REGISTER. YEAR. No.l 26 WEBB CITY. MO. S.

W. MISSOURI ELECTRIC LINE. Has an Instructor For New Conductors- -Some Sound dions by Pres. Rogers. ly the thousands of passengers who every day ride on the cars of the Southwest Missouri Electric Railway company note a change in ductors.

Of late, on account of the additional cars being placed in service by the opening of the Duenweg and 1 Chitwood divisions, these chauges have been quite frequent. To break in a new conductor or even a motorman on a system so extensive as President Rogers' line is no easy task and for that purpose a special instructor has been elected in Al. R. Bascom, a former well known conductor, who was injured in a wreck. The "green" conductor applies at the general office in Webb City for a job.

If extras are needed, he is referred to the superintendent of transportation, who in turn places him in charge of the special instructor. Then the green hand must go through eral weeks of careful training before the company will allow him to approach the least cultured of the company's patrons and say with rising inflection, "Fare, please?" And not only is this training and schooling exacted at the hands of the oldest and best representatives of the company, but the pupil receiving it must have been of the best possible material in the first place and when he has passed this instruction he must answer the questions which are put to him by an examining committee. Thereafter he is a graduate of the best system of schooling to be devised by the operating company and he receives his diploma in the form of a uniform and cap with a registered number. "I have always made the point to the conductor that he is like the expert watchmaker," said President Rogers; "that it is his duty to deal with the public as the watchmaker deals with the watch, The conductor has assembled in his cars dozens of people of all tempers and classes. They are supposed to ride in harmony and without friction; he must pass 223.

among them without upsetting the equilibrium of the assemblage. "If there is friction or trouble of any kind it is impressed upon him that he should know just what to do under the circumstances, both as preservation of order and as to the prevention of disorder. "In the processes of making a new conductor the material of the man is of first consideration. Friends have come to me to asking that a certain man of their acquaintance, who may be deserving, be placed on the list of candidates. They are surprised beyond measure at times when I tell them that everything in the past life of the man -his personality, his work, and his surroundings--have unfitted him in every way for the position.

They don't understand why it is that our men may not be recruited from the haulers of swill barrels and drivers of carts. "At times our employes have been criticised for the treatment of drunkards and refusing to haul them or in keeping them from boarding cars. Tue greatest nuisance in the world is a drunken man, and especially if there are ladies in a car. conductors have imperative orders to keep drunken men off the cars and if the employes get into trouble in enforcing this order the company stands back of them. it "We have too many patrons who are lacking that charity in its broad sense which makes the world akin.

Too often are there complaints against conductors which Interpreted mean that men and women born to wealth, refinement, and social station are intolarant of the lack of those things in the men who may have found it hard enough to pass to the work of MO. MONDAY EVENING. collecting their, nickels and starting and stopping the cars in which they ride. They forget the toleration and self-control 1 and exercise of judgment which the conductor so often is forced to use. And as an offender against the conductor and against the passengers at large it may be said that the laboring man with lime on his boots and callous spots in his palms, is one of the DOCKERY NAMES WALLER Moberly Man to Vacency Caused by the Death of Jadge Heckaday.
