Emm- -vm A statewide coalition of bar owners contends in a Polk County lawsuit that the Iowa Smokefree Air Act is unconstitutional. They say it infringes on the rights of bar owners and turns them into an enforcement arm of the state.

On Friday, three bar owners testified that business has dropped off substantially since the public smoking ban took effect July 1. Attorney for the Iowa bar owners, George Eichhom, said the law interferes with owners' rights to use their property. But assistant Iowa Attorney Jeffrey Thompson said studies show that smoking bans help businesses overall, and that "over time, good businesses thrive." A Polk County judge could decide as early as this week whether to block state health officials from future enforcement of the anti- smoking law. American Idol Auditions in K.C. The only Midwest stop in search of participants for the eigth season of American Idol takes place in Kansas City on Friday.

Fifteen thousand hopeful singers are expected to audition at Kemper Arena, west of downtown Kansas City. Registration takes place Wednesday and Thursday. Overnight camping is not allowed.
