Prosecutors say Piper's DNA also was found in a small drop of blood on a blanket removed from a room at the Budgetel Inn Clive hotel room where maid Zurijeta Sakanovic, 21, was strangled and fatally stabbed in September 1997. Piper was charged with Sa-kanovic's murder in April 2000. Jury selection begins today in that trial, which has been moved to Council Bluffs to avoid Polk County publicity. A first trial in January ended in a mistrial, as did the first of two trials in the Lange case. Authorities wont say whether Piper is a suspect in any of the other killings.

Law enforcement officials wont comment on who they think killed Redrovan, the Ecuadorean hotel maid. "I think all we're willing to say at this time is that the Redrovan case is still open," said West Des Moines police Sgt. Jim Barrett. Over the years, however, suburban authorities several times have linked Redrovan's murder with Sa- kanovic's. Redrovan, Sakanovic and Lange all were found partially nude with their wrists bound.

The Redrovan and Sakanovic cases "have a lot in common," Clive police Chief Dean Dymond said in 1998. "It's a reasonable assumption that they are probably related may be related." That suspicion was later echoed by a multi-agency team that reviewed the hotel deaths. Westhoff confirmed that Piper answered police questions about Redrovan during the investigation of one of the other hotel homicides. No charge was ever filed. Arlys Ponce Three months before Redrovan was killed, the children of 42-year-old Arlys Ponce came home from school to find their mother dead.

She had been stabbed repeatedly. Ponce, a home child-care provider in Norwalk, died Oct. 8, 1997. Norwalk police have never made an arrest. Neither has the state Division of Criminal Investigation, which eventually took control of the case.

Ponce's husband, Robert, said he was told several years ago that the list of suspects included Piper. Detectives investigating the hotel murders cpuestioned Ponce both about his alibi and about alleged contact that Piper had with Arlys Ponce, her husband said. They told me that he had con tacted her about baby-sitting on the weekend," Robert Ponce said. "For what reason, I dont know but I know she never brought it up to me, and I know that she would have." Ponce, who is critical of the way police handled the investigation, says he has not spoken to authori ties in roughly two years. He tries not to get his hopes up that his wife's murder will be resolved.

The suspect list also was expanded to include Piper and Proctor, who was convicted of killing and burning Patricia Howlett in November 1994. Vaughn said nothing specific about the case led investigators to Piper. "It's just natural that you're going to check something out like that," he said. He said deputies have no plans to question Piper until he has exhausted his appeals on the two court cases.

The probe into Erickson's death remains open, Vaughn said. Thorpe said she remains haunted by the unanswered questions. "You wonder if that person is out there, and if they're doing it to someone else." Connie Jo Bodensteiner Connie Jo Bodensteiner was seen leaving the Polk County Courthouse on Aug. 1995. One week later, her half-nude body was found stuffed inside the basement storage area of a Fleur Drive apartment building where she did not live.

She had been strangled. Bodensteiner, who faced charges for prostitution and drugs when she died, knew her share of shady characters. Her parents say Des Moines police investigated several people in the case, including a man arrested for killing a pimp about the same time as her death. No arrests were ever made. "As far as I'm concerned, they never really looked very hard at anything," said Sandy Choate, the dead woman's mother.

"I dont think the police department really cared." Bodensteiner's parents said they allowed detectives to exhume then- daughter's body a couple of years ago. Investigators told the parents they were looking for DNA under Bodensteiner's fingernails something authorities evidently failed to check before she was I.
