SCAVO CAMPUS A Year To Remember Roosevelt Alex Cooney, a member of the school's newspaper staff, said the student body was excited about success of the boys' cross country team. The squad won the state championship in its class despite being somewhat or an underdog. The big hug an effort to get into the Guinness Book of Records was another notable event, Cooney said, even though it wasn't big enough to break the world record. The Roosevelt hug included 1,220 people. The world record, 2,309 people, was set by a school in Minnesota.

Saydel Having the boys' basketball team play in the state tournament was a highlight of the year at Saydel, said Steve Nuzum, editor of the school's newspaper. The team advanced to state for the first time in 45 years, and school was cancelled the day the team played in the tournament.Nuzum said the community rallied behind the team, and the school won the sportsmanship award for its class. By MADELAINE JEROUSEK REGISTER STAFF WRITER Of the dozens of paintings Valerie Ferguson has done during her time at Valley High School, there's one that will always stand out in her art teacher's mind.

The painting is a self-portrait in which Ferguson is a porcelain marionette, with strings controlling her head and arms. Ever since being diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma in November, Ferguson said she has felt like that marionette, pulled in multiple directions by her doctors and parents, despite wanting to be a normal high school senior. "She felt pulled so much by the disease," said Tom Murphy, her art teacher at West Des Moines' Valley High School. Through some of the toughest times in the last seven months, the soft-spoken love of art kept her balanced. During that time, Ferguson completed her most significant piece of work yet a 32-foot-high mural in the old sanctuary of Goria Dei Lutheran Church in Urbandale.

The vivid mural brought life to the dull room, and gave Ferguson a diversion from her illness. "It was my distraction," she said Between school work, school activities and doctors' appointments, Ferguson spent all her free time working on the mural each week. Brian Peter, director of youth and family ministry at Gloria Dei, said he was amazed to see Ferguson climbing around on scaffolding at the church the day after her radiation treatments. Most people would be too weak to leave the house, he said. Despite feeling exhausted much of the time, Ferguson went to class as often as she could and stayed up with her schoolwork.

She will spend the summer doing mission work with her church youth group. One of the trips will take her to inner-city Los Angeles, where she and her friends will paint murals on the sides of churches. "It was sad to see her get set back by the disease," Murphy said "The amazing thing is she's always there, still going. It made her more determined to succeed."
