Recent Deaths Sharon Sheeley, hit songwriter in 1950s, dies at 62 LjS walk in Riverside, Calif. Smith died after someone drove up in a truck and hit him. He was rushed to Riverside Community Hospital where he died later that night. No arrests have been made. Smith was Cochran, who sang "Summertime Blues" and "Cmon Everybody." "She was such a California gal so she was always in a miniskirt and sandals, then complained about being cold all the time." With his round, smiling face, the bald Yanagiya was well known for his skillful use of a Japanese fan while performing MS 4 known as Darwood Kaye when he was a child.

He appeared in 22 of the "Our Gang" comedies, working with other child actors, including Robert Blake. Smith also was in a 1944 Lucille Ball film called "Best Foot Forward." When Smith was a teen, he became a Christian and ended his acting career. Smith became a pastor in the Seventh-day Adventist Church and lived in Thailand for 14 years performing missionary work. Alec Campbell, 103, the last living Australian known to have fought in the bloody World War I Gallipoli campaign and possibly the last from any nation died Thursday on the southern island state of Tasmania. Campbell lied about his age to enlist at age 16.

With his own orchestra, Cates also hit the top40 charts with his 1955 recording of "Moonglow" and "Theme From Picnic." Bill Peet, 87, a Disney illustrator and writer revered for drawing such characters as Dumbo and creating the screenplay for "101 Dalmatians," died May 11 at his home in Los Angeles. He recently had pneumonia, and battled cancer and heart problems over the past several years. Peet helped develop a series of storyboards that later became some of Disney's first animated films. Among the Disney classics featuring Peet's talents are "Fantasia," released in 1940, "Song of the South" in 1946, "Cinderella" in 1950, "Alice in Wonderland" in 1951, and "Sleeping Beauty" in 1959.

Peet left the studio in 1964 because of a thorny relationship with Disney. In his autobiography published in 1989, Peet said he drew the evil Captain Hook in "Peter Pan" to resemble Disney.
