Mason, 74, of the 400 block of Northwest Sturbridge Street, Ankeny, died of congestive heart failure Thursday at lowa 1 Lutheran Hospital. Services will be at 10 a.m. today at Elkhart Christian Church in Elkhart, of which she was a member. Burial will be at Elkhart Cemetery.

Mrs. Mason was born in Des Moines and had lived in Elkhart 68 years before moving to Ankeny six years ago. Shel was a retired re-insurance specialist with Central Life Assurance Co. and a member of Lake Country Senior Center. She was a past president of -the Nathaniel Parmenter Association, and enjoyed fishing, genealogy, bowling and her computer.

She is survived by her husband, William; a son, Larry of Lake Charles, a daughter, Kari Roth of Waukee; and four grandchildren. Memorial contributions may be made to her church. Hamilton's Near Highland Memory Gardens Funeral Home is handling arrangements. CHARLES CARPENTER Des Moines Charles Albert Carpenter, 71, of the 1400 block of Ninth Street died of a heart ailment May 7 at home. The body was cremated and memorial services were held Saturday at Trinity United Methodist Church.

Mr. Carpenter was born in Waterloo and had lived in Des Moines most of his life. He was a retired custodian with the Des Moines schools and a Marine veteran of World War II. He is survived by a brother, Lewis of Waterloo; and three sisters, Edna, Wilma, and Virginia, whose last names and addresses are unknown. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy.

"Yak" Yakovich, 75, of Tucson, died of lung cancer Friday at home. Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Des Moines, with burial at Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Mr.

Yakovich was born in Centerville and had lived there and in Des Moines. He had lived in Tucson eight years. He was a retired Des Moines letter carrier with the U.S. Postal Service, a Navy veteran and had served in the lowa Air National Guard. He was a longtime Des Moines Little League coach, and enjoyed hunting and lowa State football.

He is survived by his wife, Phyllis; two sons, Jack of Pittsburgh, and Joseph of Tucson; four daughters, Kathryn Fatino of Kansas City, and Cindy Guare and Michelle Yakovich and Julie Timmons, all of Tucson; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Southtown Funeral Home, where a rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society. LEO ULLRICH Des Moines Leo Michael Ullrich, 85, of the 2800 block of 35th Street died of a kidney ailment Monday at home. Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, of which he was a member. LEO ULLRICH Des Moines Burial will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at Calvary Cemetery in Ottumwa.

Mr. Ullrich was born in Ottumwa and had lived there until moving to Des Moines in 1961. He had worked for Lewis Systems, Standard Brands and was a fireman for the Milwaukee Railroad before retiring. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. He is survived by his wife, Frances; a daughter, Mary Ellen Blomme of Des Moines; a son, Robert of Fort Collins, nine grandchildren; and seven greatgrandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Westover Funeral Home, where a vigil service will be held at 7 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to his church or Mercy Hospice. JANICE PELZ Cambridge Janice Pelz, 43, of Cambridge died of a heart ailment Sunday at home. Cremation will follow visitation.

Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church in Ames. Burial of the cremains will be at a later date. Mrs. Pelz was born in Spencer and had lived there as a youth before moving to Ames in 1983.

She was a warehouse clerk with Story Construction in Ames and a member of Spencer United Methodist Church. She enjoyed camping, crafts and gardening. She is survived by her husband, Steven, and two sons, Zachary and Samuel, both at home; and two sisters, Susan Koelper of Neenah, and Nancy Dashner of Pacific Junction. Friends may call after 4 p.m. today at Adams Funeral Home in Ames, where the family will be present from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Janice Pelz Memorial Fund, for her sons. MARY BRINDLE Belmond Mary G. Brindle, 78, of Belmond died of congestive heart failure Sunday at Belmond Medical Center. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Calvary Baptist Church in Union, with burial at Union Cemetery there.

Mrs. Brindle was born in Hardin County and had lived in Union until moving to Osage in 1994. She had lived in Belmond since 2000. She was a retired health care assistant with Marshall County Care Facility. She is survived by two sons, Charles of Belmond and Duane of Missouri Valley; two daughters, Diane Warden and Janine Lawler, both of Union; a sister, Myrna Smith, and a brother, Paul Rowen, both of Union; 15 grandchildren; and six greatgrandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George. The family will receive friends from 5 to 9 p.m. today at Biersborn Funeral Home in Union. Memorial contributions may be made to the Mary G. Brindle Memorial Fund.

PRISCILLA POE Des Moines Priscilla F. Lawrence Poe, 83, of the 2700 block of Westover Boulevard died of complications following pneumonia Saturday at USA Healthcare Center in Urbandale. Services will be at 1 p.m. today at Westover Funeral Home, with burial at Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Mrs.

Poe was born in Lohrville and had lived in the Des Moines area all her life. She was a homemaker and enjoyed dining out, dancing, sewing and flowers. She is survived by a son, Bill Lawrence, and a daughter, Ann Moulder, both of Des Moines; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Paul A. Lawrence and Donavon Poe.

CRAIG VAN ARKEL Grinnell Craig Van Arkel, 50, of Grinnell died of a heart ailment Friday at home. Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at First Friends Church near Grinnell, which he attended.

Burial will be at Pleasant Township Cem- etery near Ewart. Mr. Van Arkel was born in Des Moines and had lived in Malcom most of his life before moving to Grinnell in 1974. He was a Grinnell farmer who was nationally recognized for Suffolk sheep breeding and sheep judging. He had served 14 years as a field supervisor for the Farm Progress Show, and was a board member for the Suffolk Sheep Association and Heartland Cooperative.

He is survived by his wife, Deborah; two daughters, Emily Van Arkel and Thea Van Arkel, both at home; his parents, Doris and James Van Arkel of Malcom; two brothers, Alan of Plainfield and David of Malcom; and a sister, Sandra Hibbs of Colby, Wis. Watts Funeral Home in Montezuma is handling arrangements. FORREST TENNIHILL Dallas Center Forrest V. Tennihill, 87, of Dallas Center died of a heart ailment Friday at Spurgeon Manor there. Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Seventh Day Adventist Church on Watrous Avenue in Des Moines, of which he was a member.

Burial will be at Glendale Cemetery. Mr. Tennihill was born in Des Moines and had lived here for most of his life. He had farmed near Lost Nation. He was a regional sales manager for Protein Plus Laboratories before retiring.

He enjoyed singing. He is survived by his wife, Glee, of Dallas Center; four daughters, Judy Howell of Phoenix, Bonnie Tornquist of Cottonwood, Patty Lidner of Glendale, and Laura Schneider of West Des Moines; 10 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren. JOHN GIUDICESSI Des Moines John J. Giudicessi, 80, of the 2500 block of South Union Street died of a heart ailment Sunday at Mercy Medical Center. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, of which he was a member.

Burial will be at Resthaven Cemetery. Mr. Giudicessi had lived in Des Moines all his life. He was a retired welder and sheet metal worker with Waldinger Corp. He is survived by his wife, Doris; a son, Frank and a brother, Tony, both of Virginia Beach, seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. today at McLaren's Funeral Chapel, where a vigil service will be held at 7 p.m. CHANCEY BRANCHCOMB Des Moines Chancey Alan Branchcomb, old son of Jamie Branchcomb Sr. and Amie Shriner of the 7000 block of Bloomfield Road died of complications of premature birth Saturday at Mercy Medical Center. Services will be at 2 p.m.

Wednesday at Sunset Funeral Chapel, with burial at Sunset Cemetery. Chancey was born in Des Moines. In addition to his parents, he is survived by a brother, Jamie and four sisters, Destiney Shriner, Dezerae Shriner, Annakay Branchcomb, and Lacianna Branchcomb, all of Des Moines; and his grandparents, Gary Nelson, Gary Bishop, Dan Branchcomb, Janet Bishop, Marilyn Grove and Debbie Neads, all of Des Moines. MAXINE ELLIS Des Moines EVA KELLEY Maxine Ruth Ellis, 79, of Scottish Rite Park died of complications of lupus Sunday at lowa Methodist Medical Center. Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Southtown Funeral Home, with burial at Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Mrs. Ellis was born in Indiana and had lived in Des Moines most of her life.

She had worked for the lowa Department of Public Safety and was a member of Bethany Baptist Church. She enjoyed her faith. She is survived by her husband, Wayne; a son, Gary, and a daughter, Christine Christman, both of Des Moines; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

MICHAEL SCHOONOVER-MARTIN Des Moines Michael Brandon Schoonover-Martin, 5-day-old son of Lisa Schoonover and Michael Martin of the 1300 block of East Douglas Avenue died of complications of premature birth Saturday at Mercy Medical Center. Services will be at 9 a.m. Wednesday at Southtown Funeral Home, with burial at Sunset Memorial Cemetery. Michael was born in Des Moines.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by a brother, Collin Dale Hannam, at home; his grandparents, Deborah and Gary Schoonover and Ruth and Jon Carpenter, all of Des Moines, and Mona and Phil Martin of Norwalk; and his great-grandparents, Dorothy Schoonover of Des Moines, Margaret May Arrick of Council Bluffs and Lawrence Martin of Sioux Falls, S.D. DES MOINES DEATHS Boone Eva May Kelley, 91, of Boone died of congestive heart failure Friday at Evangelical Free Church Home there. The body was cremated. Private services were held with burial of the cremains at Linwood Park Cemetery. Mrs. Kelley had lived in Boone all her life.

She was the retired co-owner of Superette Grocery Store and had worked for Holst Publishing Co. She is survived by her husband, Clint; a son, Morris of Boone; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Goen, 71 of Dyersville, la died Friday, May 10, 2002, at Oak Crest Manor in Dyersville after a lengthy illness. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 14, at St. Francis Xavier Basilica in Dyersville with burial in St. Francis Cemetery.

John was born on December 16, 1930 in Dubuque, IA, the son of Dr. Donald J. and Evelyn (Byrne) Goen of Manchester, IA where he was raised. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1950 to 1952.

John married Jeanne M. Jenk on August 27th, 1955 in Dyersville, IA. John attended Loras College, then attended the Naval Academy. He graduated from the University of Iowa Law School in 1957, was Dubuque Co Attorney from 1970 to 1972. He was a life long member of the Democratic Party, the Iowa State Bar Association and the American Legion Post 7736.

John practiced law in Dyersville with Jenk, Jenk, and Goen, and later Goen law office for 38 years until his retirement in 2001.
