Sept. 2, 1980 II DF.S MOINES REGISTER 3S Billy still babbles about Steiiibrenner9 Yanks players get suspended. Why not an umpire?" Neudecker's mistake, in Martin's judgment, was ruling a home run on a drive that the A's manager believed hit the Fenway Park wall. "He ruled that a fan reached over and touched It but the ball hit a foot and a half below the wall and bounced back," Martin said. "When my outfielders started arguing, he waved them away, saying he would only talk to me.

I asked him, 'Have you ever seen a ball hit a fan and ricochet 40 feet? Did the fan have steel But he never changed the call. The next day, Carlton Fisk moved his shoulder into a slow curve and the umpire ruled hit by pitch. I ran up there and asked him, 'You think he'd manager spends every day with 'em. If they read something in the papers about what the owner says, it'll take them about four or five days to get over it. If the manager blasts 'em, they'll be mad but they'll go out and perform.

I always felt I'd lose the players if I criticized 'em in the papers." MARTIN, HOWEVER, has not been reluctant to criticize an umpire, Jerry Neudecker, who ejected him from the A's game Sunday in Boston. "I won't manage another game that Neudecker umpires," said Martin. "I may not even put my team on the field. I think it's come to the point where when he makes a mistake, he's got to be punished, he can't be like a Supreme God out there. I get fined, do that on a fast ball, he's got to try to get out of the way of the pitch, not move into The next thing I know, Neudecker has come down from first base.

He's just listening, he tells me, and I tell him, 'Didn't you tell my outfielders to go back to their positions yesterday. Well now I'm telling you to go back to your And he. throws me out. He's an incompetent umpire." AMONG OTHERS, Reggie Jackson has predicted that some day Martin will manage the Yankees again. Asked about that, he smiled.

"I got a nice job," he said. "I don't think I'll ever manage the Yankees again. Maybe an owner. And if that happens, I'll always have a job for George." Billy Martin Questions use of Guidry after Tom Underwood's four-hit shutout, Howser responded to Martin's theory. "He's got his point," the Yankee manager said.

"But he hasn't seen Guidry this year. I don't think the bullpen is permanent Eventually he's going to start." But now Martin was talking about Graig Nettles' absence from the Yankees because of hepatitis. "They've really missed Nettles," somebody said. "In a week, he went from being terrible to being terrific," Martin said. "If he stays out another month, he might make the Hall of Fame." "Is the Yankees' staff too old?" "I don't think it's too old.

Luis Tiant is such a good pitcher, Gaylord Perry is a real competitor. They're not too old. But they got to have Guidry starting." "What did you think of George Steinbrenner's recent blast?" "It's the manager's job to motivate, not the owner's. I told George many times that the players don't even listen to him. The players will respect anything the manager tells 'em, the manager is the boss.

But when the criticism doesn't come from the manager, they consider it embarrassing. When it comes from the owner, they don't really want to go out and play better because then they know the owner will say, 'I did "The players feel the manager knows their feelings," he said. Before the Yankees' 5-0 victory Monday, the Oakland A'l were putting on their green-and-gold uniforms and their manager was wearing a green T-shirt with "The Swingin' A's" in gold across it. But sitting in his clubhouse office, Billy Martin was still managing the Yankees, still snapping at George Steinbrenner.

"If the Yankees are going to win it," he was saying, "they have to come with Guidry as a starter." For nearly two weeks Ron Guidry, once ace of the Yankees' starting rotation, has been a relief pitcher. That decision emerged from a discussion between Guidry and Dick Howser, the Yankees' manager. Guldry's won-lost record is now 13-10, his earned-run average 3.64. "I thought he'd start against us," Martin said. They used him in relief Sunday he was told.

"I was glad to see that," the A's manager said. "As far as I'm concerned, Howser has done as good a managing job as anybody this year. The only thing I'd do differently is put Guidry in the rotation. If they get to the playoffs, they're going to get ate up (by Kansas City) if they don't have Guidry to stop 'em. He's not just a good pitcher, he's a great pitcher.

And the only way the Yankees are going to get to the playoffs is to start him." (AP) Detroit outfielder Al Cowens and Chicago White Sox pitcher Ed Farmer ended their feud Monday night at home plate in Tiger Stadium. Cowens and Farmer each brought the lineup cards to home plate ftr the traditional pregame ceremony usually performed by the managers. The two players, who have been feuding for over a year, looked tensely at one another for a moment before shaking hands. The feud between Farmer and Cowens began in 1979, when Cowens was playing for the Kansas City Royals and Farmer was a pitcher for the Texas Rangers.

Cowens suffered a broken jaw when hit by a pitch thrown by Farmer. On June 20 of this year, during a Tigers-White Sox game in Chicago, Cowens hit a ball to shortstop but instead of running to first charged Farmer. Afterwards, Manager Sparky Anderson barred police from the Tiger clubhouse police because they wanted to arrest Cowens. Farmer told Detroit News columnist Joe Falls before Monday's game that be would drop charges "if Cowens would offer his hand." A chorus of boos rang down from the stands as Fanner came up the dugout steps and trotted toward home plate. But the boos quickly turned to cheers when the fans saw Cowens emerging from the Tiger dugout and it became apparent what was happening.

A story has to have a human interest angle. I am constantly meeting people and writing about the human condition from unwed mothers to prison reform. I like listening to people and their stories .1 wouldn't trade my job for anything in the world." On change: "I've seen a trend toward more involvement with social problems the newspaper being the leader instead of the follower. We are initiating social change by going out investigating; asking the questions that need to be asked. The Des Moines Register is taking a more active role.

I think that's a good change." Follow Sherry Ricchiardi's fascinating features and reports this fall in the Des Moines Sunday Register. gj Tnwsr fgg't jgp JyJi cg It's a great way to start vour dav! 1 13.
