Pine Bluff Press-Eagle: A correspondent of Thk Gazktte wants to know what has became of Diamond Jo and his extension from Malvern to Pine Bluff. Diamond Jo will never build this road unless forced to by the Iron Mountain or some other corporation building a direct- line from Little Rock to Hot Springs. Notwithstanding all the talk and bluster to that effect there is but littje prospect of such a road being bunt this year, and if the people of Pine Bluff and Hot Springs want direct connection they would io well to get together and see whatcart be done We understand that Diamond Jo's charter lias expired, and as it runs through a valuable stretch of country most interested su'onld get it renewed and push the road to an early completion. 7 Earning. 7 Money in Circulation. Baltimore Sun: At the present time, deducting the money ljeld by the treasury and the banks, the amount of cirr dilation really in the hands of the people can hardlv fall much short of or about $16.25 to every man, woman and child in the country. This amount amply suffices for the business needs of the United States, supplemented as it is by tlie use of checks and drafts. So extensive is the use of checks and drafts at the present time, alongside of coin and other recognized forms of money, that it may be questioned whether the quantity of cash in a community is 'as much how as formerly a measure of its prosperity. On the 17th of September, 1881, the total receipts of the national banks in New Yorky iu other reserve cities, and of the banks elsewhere in the United States, aggregated but of this amount only 1.38 per cent was ingo1d, 0.17 per cent in silver, and 4.36 percent in paper currency, while 94 09 per cent was- in checks drafts etc.

In New Yorfc Hty less than 1 per cent of the payments were made in gold or in currency, whUe 98.6 per cent was in checks and drafts. In the banks elsewhere, and not in the reserve citiesf 3.3i per eerifc 'of all wiyments were made in gold, 0.6H in silver 1,427 per cent in currency and 81 74 per cent in checks and drafts.
