a roria fcnia urect, fct. Louis, r-y-'-C the public press is to expose vice and error, for upon this depends the safety of society it Weal or woe. I propose therefore for your columns a brief expo sition of the venality, and corruption of certain parties, now attempting to rob the people by procuring contracts and appropriations for their own personal aggrandizement, from the county authori ties. it A glance at the map of Pulaski county will show that from a snort distance away from the point of divergence of the Little Rock and Fort Smith, and the Little Rock and Clinton roads, that they run almost parallel, until they cross the north boundary of the county, being separated by a distance of from 6 to 8 miles only. Without being asked' for, fxcept by Hon.

liberty Bartlett, of Bartlettsville, (who seems to be particularly interested in the growth and prosperity of his "toim'' at the public expense,) and one Squire Stokes, (late of Kansas, but for some time past haa been justice of the peace, post master, assessor of revenue, school trustee and general school house and bridge builder and contractor in this township,) and a few partisan adherents' understrap pers, in their interest, the honorable County Court of Pulaski county, it seems, has granted an order for the opening of a new road running between, and parallel with the Little Rock and Fort Smith and the Little Rock And Clinton beginning at -RarUettsville, and 'coding at Springfield, Conway county. This proposed road runs through the Vast swamps and overflow of 1 alarm bayou, at a point where it is wholly im practicable to get a road under a cost of $20,000, which would be 1 passible at -all seasons of the year. Without this ex pense this overflow and swamps can only be crossed from three to four months in the year. The country here referred' to is comparatively uninhabited, nor is it habitable. The people of this township, Pyeatte, through which this road is to be run, are not asking for it, on the contrary four-fifths of them are remonstrating against itj as awanton, 'useless, and extravagant expenditure of their money.

This remonstrance is now before the honorable county court. The question is will they give it a respectful consideration end determine the matter according to the people's will, and rightful demands, or will they for the sake of building up the aforesaid Squire Stokes, (who is inter ested to the amount of $2,200 00 con tractor lor building bridges) and the Hon Liberty Bartlett, by building up his town, defiantly disregard the appeals of the people upon a question in which they are so deep and vitally interested? It is to be hoped that the time has ar rived when the people will be allowed to take some part in the management of their own affairs, and when public officers openly and impudently resist their right ful and lawful demands, they will be held to a risnd accountability. We shall see. Respectfully, PRO BONO PUBLICO. N.
