In order to test what a spider can do in the way of eating, we arose about daybreak in the morning to supply his fine web with a fly. At first, however, the spider did not come from lis retreat, so we peeped among the mid thero discovered that an earwig had been caught, and was now behigJJ, on.

The spider leftine earwig, rolled up tho fly and at once returned to his "first course." This was at half-past 5 a. m. in At 7 a. m. the earwig bad been demolished, and the spider, after resting awhile, and probably enjoying a nap, came down lor tne ny, wmcti he had finished at 9 a.m.

A little after we supplied him with a daddy-long-legs, which he ate at noon. At I o'ciock a niow-iiy was greedily seiz and then immediately, with an -appetite apparently no worse lor nis previous indul gence, no commenced on ine otow- tlv. During tne day and toward evening a great many small, green Hies or what are properly termed midges, had been caught in the web: ot ttiese we counted one Hun dred and twenty, all dead and fast prisoners in the spiders nest. soon alter nark, provioeti itn a lantern, we went to examine wheth er the spider was suffering from in digestion, or in any other way, ironi his previous meals; instead, how ever, of being thus affected, he was employed in rolling up together the various utile green midges wnen he took them to his retreat and tea. This process he repeated, carrying up the lots in little detach men ts, until the web was eaten; for the web and its contents were bundled together.

A slight rest of about an hour was followed by the most industrious web-making pnsjess, and before daybreak another web was ready to tie used in the same way. Taking the relative size of the spider and of the creatures it ate, and applying this to man, it would be somewhat as follows: At daybreak a small alligator was eaten; at 7 a lamb; at 9 h. a young camelopard at 10 o'clock, a sheep, and during the night, 120 larks. This, we believe, would be a very fair allowance for a man during twenty-four hours, and could we find one gifted with such an appetite and digestion, we readily comprehend how he might spin live miles of web without killing himself, provided he possess: the necessary machinery. To ul wilhunt a Diamond Carpenters, joiners and cabinetmakers are frequently called upon to tit glass to frames or sashes where no glass has been prepared to suit under such circumstances it would be well to know how to cut glass to answer their purposes without the aid of a diamond. Many persons may not be aware that glas-i can be cut under water with great ease, to almost any shape, by simply using a pair of shears or strong scissors. In order to insure success, two points must be attended to first and most important, the glass must be kept quite level in the water while the scissors are applied; and, secondly, to avoid risk, it is better to begin the cutting by taking off small piecifs at the corners and along the edges, and so reduce the shape gradually to that required, as if any attempt is made to cut the glass all at once to the shape, as ic should cut a niece of carol 0 ird, il will most likely break just here it is not wanted. Some kinds of glass it much better than olheis, the softer glasses being the besl for this purpose. The scissors need not be at all sharp, as their action does not seem to depend on the stale of the edge presented to the glass.

hen the operation goes on well, the glass breaks away trom the scissors in small pieces in a straight line with the b'ades. This method of culling glass has of on been of service when a diamond has not been at hand, for cutting ovals and segments, and though the 1 dges are not so smooth as might be. desired for some purposes, yet it will answer in a great many case. The two hints given if strictly followed, will always insure success, IIONh. The republican talk about "revolutionists" nonsense.

The 1 ical must give a dollar puff for a worthless nve cent cigar; a man hands in aonedollar advertisement and modestly asks that a two-dollar local notice be thrown in free of charge. The preachers must all be noticed no matter how dry their sermons and lauded to theskhw. Friends call and get angry if, in the notice of their visit, they are not dubbed "Col." "Capt." or "Hon." It is an unpardonable offense to sjieak of a man as One conjes to the local and sayt'1 Wfy going lo have a little Htiiper jto-night, and we waut you to give us a good notice for the benefit of the church, you know;" and yet they almost invariably forget to give complimentary tickets to the office.

They want their suppers, entertainments, ad vertised free of charge, and then expect the hs-al to iay his way in, and give a lengthy notice of how the affair went off. Bight here he catches "tits." He is sure to incur the everlasting displeasure of some one in his account of theaffair. If bis space is limited and necessity compels hiih to make his notice brief, all the participants clevtte their noses and unite in calling him a fraud, or something worse; if ho praises one a little more than another, l.o is accused of favoritism, pertiality, etc. Again, the local is called Dead-head, indeed: No man in the community pays as much as he. He must be "everything to everybody," and eventually bo d-r-d by everybody.

C. Porter, of the Barrymore Di plomacy combination, in Marshall, Texas, a few days ago, was well-know by -hundreds of railroad men in this city and stale. Pre. vious to the war Currie was a lire-man on the Little Miami railroad, a ud tired the same engine on which By Belding was engineer. He made his home in Pendleton.

In lsiil he enlisted in Capt. Fisher's company of the Twelfth Ohio volunteers, and served four years in western Virginia. During the latter part of the war he was promoted to sergeant, and served on provost duly in Charleston, Va. He: was regarded as a quiet and gentlemanly fellow, an excellent soldier and a cheerful and entertaining messmate. At the close of the war he drifled out to Kansas, and soon became identified with the "Wild Bill" gang.

A few years ago, while in Kllsworth, Kansas, he got into a quarrel with a brother of the Capt. Fisher with whom he served In the army, and killed him. After this, in a house of ill-fame in the same city, he qitftrreled with his mistress, killed her and two men beside, and mortally wounded woodier women and two more men. Then a vigilance committee got afier him to rid the world of the rcd-humled tiend, but he was saved by a railroad friend, who permitted him to ride out ol the state in his water-tank, 'w ith his head only above the witter. el I Legislate Li'incintiati Coiniiiercial. Washington, March 23. Jo. Blackburn said to-day that there would undoubtedly lie new legislation and much of it. Soutnern and western democrats thought that advantage should be tuken of the extra session to try and give the people financial relief.

The revenue laws also needed amendment and modification. "We do not pro- pose," said Mr. Blackburn, "to listen to the cry of the republicans that a short sission is Ihe only relief for ihe governmental wrongs that exist. It makes little difference how long the session continues. We are hereto legislate as well as appropriate, and let us do it and see if we cannot be of some benefit to the people who sent us here." By liong efforts he remained apijarent- ly cool and exhibited nothing of his anxiety. "That coin cost me dear," said the man from Bokhara. "It has hern sweated in man's blood his heart blood.
