Hawthorne is perhaps best known for his 1850 novel, "The Scarlet Letter," but the 19th century author wrote more than 100 important pieces. A master at probing the human nature, Hawthorne was one of the early Americans to build stories around his regional roots.

Most of his works, which he labeled romances, are set against the somber backdrop of Puritan 17th century New England. Across the top from the upper left is simply the word "Hawthorne." At the lower right appears "USA 20c." The stamp is printed in yellow, magenta, cyan and black by the gravure process. Stamps will be issued in panes of 50, which will carry four single-digit plate numbers of different colors. Collectors who want first day of issue cancels can send envelopes with stamps affixed to "Customer-Affixed Envelopes," Postmaster, Salem, Mass. 01970-9991. The deadline is Aug.

7. Buffalo fete The town of Buffalo is celebrating its 150th birthday this weekend. A cacheted envelope and a pictorial cancel to note the occasion are available to collectors. The cachet shows a steamboat and includes the wording "Buffalo, Iowa 1S83 150th Commemorative Celebration July lst-4th." An outline map of Iowa is featured in the cancel. The wording includes "Sesquicentennial Station Buffalo, Iowa 52728," with the dates 1833 and 1983 and the words "150 Years" in the map.

Envelopes will be sold today and Monday at the park in Buffalo.
