Another humbling loss for stumbling Huskers By RANDY PETERSON REGISTER STAFF WRITER Boulder, Cola Seneca Wallace has been worth more than winning seasons and bowl-eligibility the past two seasons for the Iowa State athletic department. The entertaining quarterback also has been at least partly responsible for a $1 million windfall.

That's the amount of television revenue above what was budgeted that the Cyclones will receive for having a school-record nine televised regular-season games. The best exposure for Iowa State football previously was in 2000, when seven regular-season games were aired. Four regular-season games were televised last season. "It's winning, it's our schedule and it's Seneca," Iowa State athletic director Bruce Van De Velde said. "We Ve been a very appealing team to our television partners." Iowa State will receive $4,179,000 for the nine televised games, $1,033,900 more than was budgeted.

"It's all going into the athletic budget for all sports," Van De Velde said. Each school in the Big 12 Conference receives a base fee of $1,427,000 from the television revenue. The additional money comes from appearance fees: $1 million for the Florida State game on Fox Sports Net $178,000 for the Kansas game on Fox Sports Net $356,000 for the Iowa game on ESPN2 $228,000 for the Nebraska game on ABC $178,000 for the Texas Tech game on TBS $228,000 for the Oklahoma game on ABC $228,000 for the Texas game on ABC $178,000 for the Kansas State game on TBS $178,000 for the Colorado game on Fox Sports Net. Van De Velde budgeted conservatively, figuring four games and the base fee to be worth $3, 145, 100. "Budgeting television revenue was done early, before we had a chance to jockey some games around," Van De Velde said.

The Kansas game was moved from what was supposed to be the season finale to Aug. 31, so it could be televised on Fox Sports Net. The move generating $178,000 for both schools. "It was a good financial move there's a good chance it wouldn't have even been televised if we played the game when it was originally scheduled," Van De Aug. 24 Florida State 38-31 Aug.

4 Texas out of the national title chase with six touchdown passes in leading Texas Tech to a 42-38 upset over the fourth-ranked Longhorns on Saturday. Kingsbury, who completed 38 of 60 passes for 473 yards against one of the nation's top defenses, not only dashed Texas' title hopes but also lifted Texas Tech into the Big 12 South race. The Red Raiders visit co-No. 4 Oklahoma next weekend, with the winner taking the division and advancing to the Big 12 title game on Dec. 7.

A loss to Oklahoma last month all but eliminated the Longhorns from the conference race, but they still had an outside chance of reaching the BCS' national title game in the Fiesta Bowl on Jan. 3. That's gone, too. Chris Simms, who threw for 345 yards and four touchdown passes, tried to lead Texas back, but Texas Tech safety Ryan Aycock intercepted a pass with 5 minutes 21 seconds remaining to seal the victory. Although Texas' defense came into the game ranked fifth nationally, allowing just 261 yards per game, Texas Tech had 306 yards by halftime and finished with 606.

With the score 21-21 at the half, Kingsbury opened the third quarter with eight successive completions, including a 5-yard touchdown pass to Wes Welker, who had 247 overall yards. Kingsbury moved up to the No. 2 passer in Division I history with 11,831 yards, passing Todd Santos of San Diego State, Chris Redman of Louisville and Tim Rattay of Louisiana Tech. Texas took a 7-0 lead when Cedric Benson scored from 2 yards just two plays after Kingsbury fumbled on Texas Tech's first play from scrimmage. After a Texas Tech punt forced Texas to start at its 10-yard line, Simms led the Longhorns on a 12-play drive, finding Roy Williams alone in the end zone to give Texas a 140 lead.

Texas kept the drive alive on a fake punt. Texas Tech, averaging just over 38 points a game, failed to score in the first quarter for the first time since its opening game, 45-21 loss to Ohio State. But the Red Raiders came back in the second quarter to tie it at 14-14 with touchdown passes from Kingsbury of 23 and 15 yards in the first 5 minutes. Statistics on 4C OKLAHOMA 49, BAYLOR 9 Waco, Texas While continuing his push for serious Heisman Trophy consideration, Quentin Griffin helped Oklahoma rebound from its first loss. Griffin had his sixth straight 100-yard rushing game, running for 152 yards and three touchdowns, and he also had a 35-yard touchdown reception to lead the fourth-ranked Sooners.

He scored the first two touchdowns for Oklahoma, then had the last two scores during a three-touchdown blitz after halftime. "It was a good, solid win, and Quentin was exceptional," Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops said. The victory probably won't help the Sooners climb back up in the Bowl Championship Series standings. Oklahoma dropped from first to fourth after its 30-26 loss at Texas last week. Baylor has been outscored, 271-30, while losing sjx straight games.

Texas beat the Bears, 41-0, last week and still lost a spot in the BCS standings. MISSOURI 33, TEXAS 27 College Station, Texas Brad Smith's 1-yard touchdown run in the second overtime helped Missouri overcome blowing a two-touchdown halftime lead. Smith also threw two touchdown passes for the Tigers, who were coming off a 42-35 overtime loss against Colorado. The Aggies were trying to follow up their victory over top-ranked Oklahoma with another victory, and they had the ball first in the second overtime. But they failed to score when Missouri cornerback Michael Harden intercepted Dustin Long's pass.

Em Velde said. The Nebraska game was moved from Oct. 5 to Sept. 28. The game was televised on ABC and both schools received $228,000.

Those two moves by Van De Velde netted the budget $406,000. The Cyclones' tough schedule was another reason for the television interest. Six of Iowa State's opponents were rated at the time of the game, including three in the top 10 No. 3 Florida State, No. 2 Oklahoma, and No.

It was also the longest Kansas State run since Gerald Hackney's 96-yarder against the Jayhawks in 1948. "It looked like the Red Sea," Roberson said. "I spotted the goal line and I just ran away." The Huskers' five regular-season losses already are the most since the 1961 team went 3-6-1, and Saturday's loss dropped their road record against ranked teams to 1-7 under coach Frank Solich. Nebraska still leads the series 72-13, with two ties, but Kansas State's previous largest margin was a 27-0 shutout in 1953.

The Wildcats (9-2, 5-2) had their largest margin against a longtime opponent for the third straight week. They beat Kansas, 64-fl, and Iowa State, 58-7. Roberson's rushing output, on 29 carries, broke Michael Bishop's quarterback record of 196 yards set against Missouri in 1997. It was the second-best rushing day for the Wildcats, behind Mike Lawrence's 252-yard game against Iowa State in 1996. Roberson's long run put the Wildcats ahead, 14-0.

He also had a 1-yard keeper for a score on Kansas State's opening drive and a 25-y arder in the fourth quarter that made it 35-13. The Wildcats extended their home winning streak against the Cornhuskers to three games something they and their fans have come to expect. "It's a great win," Shull said. After his record-setting performance as a ballcarrier, Kansas State quarterback Ell Roberson stayed in the game to help a teammate break two more school marks. Roberson ran for 228 yards the most ever by a Kansas State quarterback and three touchdowns as the llth-ranked Wildcats handed Nebraska another humiliating loss Saturday, 49-13. With just over two minutes left, Roberson rolled right on the option, then pitched to sophomore tailback Darren Sproles. The resulting 70-yard touchdown run Sproles' third of the game finished off Kansas State's most lopsided victory against the Cornhuskers. It also gave Sproles 155 yards, his seventh straight 100-yard game and eighth of the season.

Josh Scobey set the school record last season with seven 100-yard games, and Isaac Jackson had six straight in 1973. "I really wanted the guy to bite on me, so I could get the ball to (Sproles) and he could go around on the outside," Roberson said. "He did, and I pitched it, and Sproles just took over." Roberson's 91-yard first-quarter touchdown run was the second-longest run against Nebraska, topped only by Gale Sayers' Other Big Long replaced injured starter Reggie McNeal in the second quarter and helped Texas rally to tie the game at 24-24 with 15 seconds left in regulation when Joe Weber scored his second touchdown from the 1 -yard line. Kansas discovered that Rashaun Woods, Oklahoma State's outstanding 6-foot 2-Inch wide receiver, is a very good big man. Me caught three of Josh Fields' school-record six touchdown passes as the Cowboys romped past Kansas and its shorter defensive backs. Working against a defense ranked 111th in Division l-A, Fields erased the school record with five scoring passes in the first half alone. "They have some big receivers and they saw the matchups that they could get on our corners," said coach Mark Mangino, whose first Kansas team finished with the school's first winless conference season since 1987. "It looked like some playground play," he said.

Fields' first three touchdown passes went to Woods, the Big 1 2's leading receiver, who had 171 yards and three touchdowns on just seven receptions. "I don't know if it was anything I did," said Fields. Fields went 17-for-26 for 354 yards, raising his season total to 2,235 yards and making him just the second Oklahoma State quarterback to pass for more than 2,000 in a season. He was one shy of the Big 12 single-game record for touchdown passes.
