ELECTION 2002: AROUND IOWA The Pes Moines Register ST Page 8A Thursday, November 7, 2002 Briefs From Across The State Gambling referendums Here are 100 percent of the unofficial returns from the 1 1 counties where voters decided whether to keep certain forms of gambling. CLARK COUNTY Casino x-Yes 2,892 80 No 743 20 CLAYTON COUNTY Casino x-Yes 5.452 81 No 1,253 19 Students' vote mirrors election Students voting in a mock election chose the same candidates as their adult counterparts at the polls. Iowa City school students, participating in the KidsVoting USA election, voted Tuesday to re-elect Gov. Tom Vilsack and to send Tom Harkin back to the US. Senate.

The students overwhelmingly chose Democrats, except in the 2nd Congressional race where they voted for incumbent Jim Leach. KidsVoting USA encourages children to accompany their parents to the polls. Often, a KidsVoting booth is set up nearby. At Coralville Elementary School Andrew Antill, a i fifth-grader, joined his grandmother to vote. "I voted Democratic because they have an open mind," he said.

Northwest Junior High eighth-grader Lisa McCully said television campaigns turned her off. "I just Dicked DeoDle," she said. "I don't "rf Republican Vaudt wins state auditor's race Republican David Vaudt narrowly won the state auditor's race Tuesday, defeating Democrat Patrick Deluhery by 3 percentage points. The final results weren't known until Wednesday. Democrats swept the other Iowa races involving Statehouse officials: governor and lieutenant governor, state treasurer, attorney general, secretary of state and secretary of agriculture.

Vaudt, a retired Des Moines-based executive with KPMG, an international accounting firm, will succeed veteran state Auditor Richard Johnson, also a Republican. Vaudt campaigned on the premise that the state's chief financial watchdog should be a certified public accountant. Deluhery, a state senator and college economics teacher from Davenport, said the credential wasn't necessary to lead the auditor's staff. Green Party loses its ballot status The Iowa Green Party lost its official ballot status in Tuesday night's elections, but says it will reclaim the status in 2004. The party had to get 2 percent in the governor's race to automatically get on the ballot for the next two years.

Green Party gubernatorial candidate Jay Robinson got 14,530 votes, or only about 1 percent of the unofficial vote. He outpaced Libertarian candidate Clyde Cleveland, who got 12,929 votes. "We have every confidence that that loss is but temporary and that we Greens will reclaim our rightful ballot status in 2004," the party said in a prepared statement, adding that no third party in Iowa has held onto ballot status in the last 70 or so years. The party qualified for automatic status after the presidential campaign of Ralph Nader in 2000. It will now have to gather petitions to get on the ballot.

Results: Democratic supporters watch voting results come in at the Hotel Fort Des Moines in Des Moines on election night. How Iowa voted for governor Unofficial results pr.pr tin ri Election may have set voter turnout record Iowa Secretary of State Chet Culver said Wednesday that he believes Iowa set a new record for voter turnout in a midterm election "Iowa had the best turnout ever in an off-year election," he said, referring to this being a year without a presidential race. At least 1.045 million people voted this year, although that doesn't take into account an estimated 5,000 to 10,000 special ballots that have yet to be counted. The turnout was roughly 58 percent of the active registered voters. Until now, Iowa's highest turnout in a midterm election was 66 percent of registered voters in 1982, about 1.05 million voters.

Boosting this year's participation were 275,000 requests for absentee ballots. Officials could not say Wednesday how many of those ballots were cast, because of special ballots yet to be counted, as know who to trust anymore because ot all tne stupid commercials. "I don't know of anything that happened as far as fraud is concerned." House Majority Leader Christopher Rants, a Sioux City Republican, said there were problems. Some counties were counting absentee ballots by hand, while others had machines that rejected absentee ballots, he said. However, as of Wednesday, no one was talking about recounts or challenges. Election Day produced only a few close races that may be affected, should a recount be requested.

They include Iowa House District 6, where incumbent Democrat Greg Stevens defeated Republican Bonnie Vetter by 75 votes. Also, in Senate District 40, incumbent Republican Richard Drake defeated another incumbent, Democrat Thomas Fiegen, by 382 votes. Iowa Secretary of State Chet Culver accused Republicans of making erroneous allegations. "I just tnink that this proves once and for all that we have some of the best election laws," Culver said. In Polk County alone, there are 2,147 special ballots. These are voters who were not shown as registered, who had received an absentee ballot, or had a change of address. Auditor Michael Mauro said a special precinct board will begin reviewing these ballots Thursday to determine whether each will be accepted or rejected. Fraud allegations quieted after election Iowa Republicans were silent Wednesday about any challenges to Tuesday's election, despite preelection allegations of possible fraud. Two weeks ago, state Republican Party Chairman Charles Larson Jr.

questioned the tactics being used by Democrats to get absentee votes. He said the GOP had brought in a private investigator from another state to check into whether fraud had occurred. GOP officials would not say Wednesday whether that investigation will continue, now that the election is over. 2002 Governor Race Boards JACKSON: J.C. Engel.
