Meth lab discovered in Hickory Hill Park Iowa City Press-Citizen An off-duty Iowa City police officer discovered a methamphetamine lab Saturday in Lower Hickory Hill Park. Officer Bob Hartman was walking his dog about 3 p.m. along the trial when he noticed ether cans and a cooler with a T- shirt on it, apparently being used as a filter. Hartman called in police, who cordoned off the site for roughly six hours to gather evidence and clean up the hazardous materials. "You could smell the anhydrous," said police Sgt.

Doug Hart. Police uncovered the first suspected meth lab ever found within city limits last March in Keokuk Apartments. Since then, the number of labs, components of labs and precursors steadily have increased, police said. Saturday's discovery marked the first lab found in a city park. "It appears they were in the process," said Iowa City Police Officer Chris Akers.

"It wasn't just a dump site." Hart said police uncovered possible leads to whoever was manufacturing the drug. The operation appeared to be similar in size to past labs found in the city, capable of yielding an ounce or more of pure meth. Typical user quantity is about one gram or less. Participants ranged in age from 8 to 13.

Dozens of Elks Lodge volunteers were on hand to referee, judge and cheer. Morgan Harrington of Belleville, was named the girls' outstanding shooter Saturday. The "Hoop Shoot" starts at the school level, then moves on to local, state, district, regional, and finally, the national level. The competition in this Midwest region began with 215,000 contestants. But only 24 made it far enough to compete in Saturday's event.

Although there were no regional contestants from the Iowa City area, there were several from other parts of Iowa such as Sioux City, West Des Moines and Cedar Rapids. Jerry Grafton, regional director of "Hoop Shoot," said 12 regions will send their winners onto the national championship. As for Austin Groth, wearing an Allen Iverson jersey and a big smile after his win, the Sioux City Elks Lodge No. 112 has high hopes for his success in the national contest. The last time Sioux City had a national champion was 1988-89 when Neal Arnold won.

"We're hoping Austin can follow in his footsteps," said Steve Smith, past lodge president. Last year's top three national finalists in each age division shot an overall average of 92 percent from the free-throw line, compared to the NBA average of 75 percent and the WNBA average of 74 percent. Previous regional Elks "Hoop Shoot" champions have appeared on Good Morning America, The Today Show and Sports Illustrated for Kids.
