Brubaker, 84, of Prairie City died of a heart ailment Friday at Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Prairie City Church of the Brethren, of which he was a member. Burial will be at Waveland Cemetery.

Mr. Brubaker was a lifelong resident of Prairie City. He owned and operated E.M. Brubaker and Sons there. He was a member of the Prairie City Volunteer Fire Department and Central Iowa Hawkeye Gas Engine Club and served on the City Council.

He enjoyed restoring antique machinery and tractors. He is survived by his wife, Norma; two daughters, Noralee Warrick of Prairie City and Marlene Smith of Bonaparte; a sister, Opal Goodrich of Prairie City; four brothers, Carl of Medford, Merlin of Bettendorf, Doyle of Newton and Marvin of Des Moines; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. today at Walters Coburn Funeral Home in Prairie City. Memorial contributions may be made to his church.

DOROTHY PARKER Johnston Dorothy Parker, 81, of Mercy Hospice in Johnston died of cancer Saturday there. Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Resthaven Mausoleum. Entombment will be at Resthaven Mausoleum. Mrs.

Parker was a lifelong resident of Des Moines. She was a member of St. Theresa's Catholic Church, Men's Garden Club and Meredith Retirees Group. She is survived by her son, Carl Dennis Parker of Windsor Heights; a daughter, Dolores Isaacson of Clarkdale, two sisters, Florence Newbiggen of Coon Rapids and Helen Rule of West Des Moines; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. OWEN HEIDERSCHEIT Waukee Owen Lee Heiderscheit, infant son of Ron and Karen Heiderscheit of Waukee, died of complications of a birth defect Friday at Mercy Medical Center. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at New Hope Assembly of God Church in Urbandale, of which he was a member. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery in Pleasant Hill. Mr. was born in Osage and lived in Cedar Rapids and Mason City prior to moving to Pleasant Hill in 1992.

He was a customer technician for Qwest. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and Communication Workers of America Local 7110. He enjoyed fishing. He is survived by his wife, Lorie; a son, Jason of Des Moines; a daughter, Brenda Dasch of Oshkosh, two stepdaughters, Heidi Henry and Tina Henry, both of Pleasant Hill; a stepson, Jordan Henry of Pleasant Hill; three sisters, Terry Gifford and Nancy Wasicek, both of Mason City, and Cam Ent of Grinnell; and two brothers, Sonny of Manly and Gary of Mason City. Mr. Thompson was born in Fort Dodge and lived in Georgia, Mississippi, Germany and Tucson, prior to moving to Des Moines. He was a member of Civitan and the Fort Dodge Lions Club. She spent more than 30 years serving on state policy-making boards and commissions.

From 1961 to 1971, Eliott served on the Governor's Commission on Youth and Children, and from 1977 to 1985 she was a member of the Iowa Real Estate Commission. "She will certainly be missed," said corrections board member Frances Colston of West Des Moines. "I think if we had members like Mildred Elliott on other state boards, they would be a lot better off." Elliott and her late husband, Jack, were fervent Republicans, though she was careful to listen to all viewpoints and avoid partisan bickering, Colston said. "She supported the party 1,000 percent, but she never carried that on her sleeve," Colston said. "She worked with everyone." Elliott is survived by three sons, Craig and Richard of Mount Ayr and Kirk of Independence, and a daughter, Karen of Mount Ayr.

Friends may call from 7 to 8 p.m. today at United Methodist Church in Mount Ayr. Memorial contributions may be made in the name of Mildred Elliott. Wilson-Watson and Armstrong Funeral Home in Mount Ayr is handling arrangements. Mildred Elliott, 74, a past chairwoman of the Iowa Board of Corrections, died from cancer Saturday.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at United Methodist Church in Mount Ayr. Burial will be at Rose Hill Cemetery there. Elliott Elliott, a longtime Republican, served JAMES WEST Ames James Russell West, 78, of Ames died of Parkinson's disease Saturday at Abington on Grand there. The body has been cremated.

Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Ames Municipal Cemetery. Mr. West was born in Ames and lived in Boone County for 10 years before spending most of his life in Ames. He was retired from the heating and air conditioning department at the National Animal Disease Laboratory in Ames.

He served in the Air Force during World War Il and the Korean War. He was a member of the American Legion posts in Ames and Boone. He is survived by his wife, Genevieve; three daughters, Janet Fisher and Faye West, both of Ames, and George Ann Cleaveland of Boone; three sons, Raymond of Brooklyn Park, James of Surprise, and Larry of Federal Way, a sister, Betty Newton of Wall Lake; 16 grandchildren; and 26 grandchildren. Stevens Memorial Chapel in Ames is handing arrangements. BARBARA FITZGERALD Des Moines Barbara Jean Hunt Fitzgerald, 67, of the 7400 block of Southwest 13th Street died of a heart ailment Friday at Mercy Medical Center.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at United Methodist Church in Cordon. Burial will be at Cambria Cemetery. Mrs. Fitzgerald was born in Lucas County and lived much of her life in the Des Moines area.

She was a homemaker and enjoyed spending time with her family. She is survived by her husband, Gerald; three sons, Steve Hunt of Cordon, Russ Hunt of Chino Hills, and Kevin Hunt of Indianola; a daughter, Debbie Hullinger of Cambria; six stepsons, Ed Fitzgerald of Houston, Texas, Ian Fitzgerald, Padraic Fitzgerald and James Fitzgerald, all of Des Moines, and Chuck Fitzgerald and Peter Fitzgerald, both of California; four stepdaughters, Mary Jo Fitzgerald of Houston, Molly Fitzgerald and Kate Fitzgerald, both of Des Moines, and Bridget Collins of St. Paul, four sisters, Laverne Street of Cambria, Marion Pearson of Corydon, Wilma Garton of Cambria and Marlis Luttrell of Denver, a brother, Richard Loney of Gower, and 12 grandchildren. Fareway Stores co-founder dies By DAVE ROEPKE REGISTER STAFF WRITER Ralph Beckwith, 89, one of the founders of Fareway Stores died Saturday of a heart ailment at his Ames home. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m.

Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church in Boone. Burial will be at Linwood Park Cemetery in Boone. Beckwith, along with his uncle, Paul Beckwith, and associate Fred Vitt, opened the first two Beckwith Fareway grocery stores in Ames and Beckwith Boone in 1938. Ralph Beckwith was involved with the company for nearly 50 years, serving as company treasurer until 1984 and serving on the corporate board until 1987. Born in Diller, Beckwith studied mechanical engineering at the University of Nebraska before learning the grocery business at Safeway Stores Inc.

in Omaha. He used his engineering background to design most of Iowa's 77 Fareway stores and invented a way to use refrigerators and freezers to heat and cool buildings. An avid church-goer and Boone business booster, Beckwith had a knack for fixing things. "He always wore a suit and tie, but he almost always had overalls on over them," said Beckwith's daughter, Jean Bailey. "He wasn't afraid to get his fingernails dirty.

We never called a plumber or an electrician or any of them. He could fix anything in his heyday." Bailey said her father was "humble, gentle and mildmannered. He did a lot more thinking and listening than he did talking." Beckwith is survived by his wife, Dortheann; a son, James of Le Mars; two daughters, Jean Bailey and Jan Baker, both of Ames; and seven grandchildren. Friends may call at the StarkWelin Chapel in Boone from 4 to 9 p.m. today or Tuesday morning at the church starting at 8 a.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church of Boone. FRANK STEELE Des Moines Frank G. Steele, 57, of the 600 block of Morton Avenue died of a heart attack Wednesday at his home. The body was cremated. No services are planned.

Burial of the cremains will be at Hamilton's Crematory. Mr. Steele was born in Chariton and lived most of his life in Des Moines. He was retired from maintenance for the Des Moines school district. He served in the Army and was a member of Open Bible Church.

He is survived by two sons, Tracy of Newton and Frankie of Des Moines; a brother, Fred of Des Moines; a sister, Doris Smith of Urbandale; and four grandchildren. Hamilton's Funeral Home is handling arrangements. CHARLES ELLINGSON Ames Charles Edward Ellingson, 46, of Ames died of a brain tumor Sunday at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Ascension Lutheran Church there, of which he was a member.

Burial will be at Ames Municipal Cemetery. Mr. Ellingson was born in Marshall, and lived in Atlantic prior to moving to Ames 26 years ago. He worked for Mathison Ford and started Car Tech with his brother in the mid1980s. He was a member of Ducks Unlimited, Otter Creek Golf Club in Ankeny and Promise Keepers.

He was a Cyclone fan. He is survived by his wife, Connie; a son, Eric Clayton Ellingson of Ames; a sister, Kathy Leonard of Ida Grove; two brothers, James of West Des Moines and Steven of Des Moines; and his father, Clayton of Atlantic. Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Stevens Memorial Chapel. WILLIAM DEAVER Rochester, Minn.

William Robert Deaver, 63, of Rochester, died of cancer Friday at his home there. The body has been cremated. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Garland-Van Arkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa. Burial with military honors will be at Forest Cemetery.

Mr. Deaver was born in Beacon and lived most of his life in Oskaloosa before moving several years ago to Rochester. He was a production manager for PepsiCola, where he worked for 45 years. He served in the Army. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

He is survived by his wife, Beverly; two daughters, Karen Stuve and Paula Hengel, both of Rochester; three sisters, Barb Ewing of Florence, Mary Gott of Beacon and Jean Padgett of Des Moines; two brothers, Harry of Mitchellville and Fred of Arkansas; and a grandchild. The family will receive friends from noon to service time Tuesday at the funeral home. HAZEL HEMBRY Osceola Hazel C. Hembry, 91, of Osceola died of complications of a stroke Friday at Clarke County Hospital. Services will be at 2 p.m.

Tuesday at Kale Funeral Home in Osceola. Burial will be at Decatur Cem- etery in Decatur City. Mrs. Hembry was born in Decatur County was a lifelong resident of Decatur and Clarke counties. She moved to Osceola in 1963.

She was a teacher in Grand River and was a cook for the Osceola Country Club, Eagles and Clarke Community Schools. She is survived by six daughters, Elouise Bethards of Seymour, Lois Gray of Altoona, Imogene Beardsley of Midway, Lucille Baughman of Osceola, Betty Halsted of Des Moines, and Kay Fenn of Nevada; four sons, Doyle of Creston, Gail, Gary and Fred, all of Osceola; a sister, Opal Blevins of Knoxville; a brother, Edwin Poole of Promise City; 25 grandchildren; 50 greatgrandchildren; two step-grandchildren; eight step-great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren. MILLARD McCULLOUGH Melcher-Dallas Millard "Buck" McCullough, 77, of Melcher-Dallas died of cancer Saturday at Pella Regional Health Center. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Melcher-Dallas, of which he was a member. Burial will be at Sacred Heart Cemetery there.

Mr. McCullough was born in Harvard and lived most of his life in MelcherDallas. He had worked as an industrial therapist at the Veterans Medical Center in Knoxville and for Melcher-Dallas schools. He served in the Army during World War II. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus.

He was a Notre Dame football fan and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. He is survived by two sons, Greg of Pleasantville and Randy of MelcherDallas; a daughter, LuAnn Lind of Valley, a sister, Margaret Hedrick of Panora; five brothers, Keith of Streamwood, Donald of Melcher-Dallas, John of Knoxville, Bobby of Pleasantville, and Jerry of Waukee; six grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his wife, Darlene. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the church, where a scripture service will be held at 7:30 p.m.

LEONA DUDLEY Mitchellville Leona L. Dudley, 87, of Mitchell Village Care Center in Mitchellville died of a blood ailment Saturday at lowa Lutheran Hospital. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at McLaren's Funeral Chapel. Burial will be at Rising Sun Cemetery in Pleasant Hill.

Mrs. Dudley was born in Iconium and lived in Centerville prior to moving to Des Moines 60 years ago. She was a homemaker and a member of Grandview Park Baptist Church. She enjoyed quilting. She is survived by two sons, Dean of Austin, Texas, and Tom of Des Moines; a daughter, Shirley Coleman of Des Moines; a sister, Lorene Dudley of Ankeny; a brother, Boyd Perry of Des Moines; eight grandchildren; 21 greatgrandchildren; and two great-greatgrandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. FORMER RESIDENTS Here is information about the death of a former central lowa resident who moved from the area more than 20 years ago: Philip Ryder Anwyl, 81, of Hemet, died of cancer July 23 at his home. No services were held, and burial was private.
