"Some people say that any publicity is good, bad publicity or otherwise," he said. "Look at the United Way. There were Issues of inappropriate use of funding with that on the national level, but the local organizations continued to thrive," Davis said.

"It's no different for the NAACP." As for criticism that the organization is out of touch with the nation's youth, that's simply not true, said Ayanna Boykins, a National Youth Board member from Omaha. "I think the youth will continue to push their agenda, whether the world of the administration is topsy-turvy or not," said Boykins, 22. Mounting criticism of affirmative action is especially worrisome, she said. "The Contract With America, proposed by the Republicans, is a big issue that everyone needs to pay attention to. This will affect scholarships, and jobs, and that's what young people care about" Boon said the NAACP has the largest contingent of youths organized for a purpose in the country.

"Remember, just as many come to report and file discrimination complaints as those I see who want to complain about the NAACP. The organization is vital and necessary." "The NAACP is going to continue in its efforts to get equal opportunity for African-Americans and our fair share of the economic pie," she said. "What American firm has not had a problem" in its administration? she asked. "The NAACP has gone for a number of years without problems in its ranks." The NAACP was founded in 1909. Its main goals have been to end discrimination against blacks and other minorities in jobs, housing and education.

Started by 60 people, black and white, today it has more than 500,000 members and 2,200 chapters across the country. Bill Davis, Minneapolis branch president, said the recent problems began soon after Benjamin Chavis became executive director in April 1993. Chavis' agreement to meet with Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrak-han led to a blizzard of criticism against the organization. The NAACP traditionally had been known for its moderate stands. That position was jeopardized when Chavis met with Farrakhan, who has been criticized for his vociferous attacks on white Americans, particularly Jews.

Davis said the publicity may have hurt some fund-raising efforts, but Name nation's oldest civil rights organization has had to weather more disasters than California lately, including accusations of mismanagement, malfeasance and charges of sexual harassment and discrimination made against top officials. 1 At the same time, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People has been accused of being out of touch with America's youth on civil-rights issues. So, what's next for the NAACP? Association officers from 10 Midwestern states spent two days in Des Moines this week, talking about the organization's future. The states with representatives at the conference were Kansas, Missouri, Iowa, Nebraska, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, Colorado and Montana. NAACP officers downplayed the organization's turmoil at the national level, calling it a blip on the screen or even good publicity.

Ina Boon, Region IV director of the NAACP, said the organization is no different from any major corporation that has had problems with finances and accusations of ill-treatment of women. Apt.
