We worked all week on Nebraska's option play, but we still couldn't stop it.

We Just made too many mental mistakes." Oberg guided the Cyclones to a touchdown and into a 7-7 tie on their first possession. After Gdowski's 26-yard scoring run made it 14-7, Jeff Shudak back in Walden's good graces after missing one game for disciplinary reasons kicked a 46-yard field goal that closed the margin to 14-10 early in the second quarter. Fumble Cost ISU The Cyclones might have reached halftime trailing by only 21-10, but they lost the ball on a fumble by Bryant with about a minute to bo. Ne- braska quickly took advantage of that A on uaowsw second scoring toss to Hughes. The third quarter featured a lot more of Gdowski, until he left with the Huskers on top, 42-17, and it also included a temper tantrum by Walden.

After Oberg was sacked by Kent Wells, he fumbled the ball and Nebraska's Kenny Walker recovered at the Cyclone 33. Walden vigorously protested that Oberg was down before he lost the ball. "It was nice to see the coach stick up for me," Oberg said. "I thought I was down, too." That Dlav set un Gdnwski'i fourth touchdown. "I can't understand why people are surprised with his play," Osborne said of Gdowski. "He's a very good player" Osborne's teams do most of the talking for him he has a 165-36-2 record in 16-plus seasons as the Huskers' coach and Gdowski isn't given to flowery phrases, either. "I was happy with the way I played today and the way our offense played," Gdowski said. It couldn't have been much better. Iowa State Nebraska i First down! REST FOR CLARK. Nebraska didn't need the services of its top run-, ning back, Ken Clark, while beating Iowa State for the 12th straight year. Clark has a sore knee and was being rested for what could be the Big Eight's championship game this week, when the Huskers go to Colorado. But the kickoff rolled out of bounds at Iowa State's 39 without going the necessary 10 yards. "I screwed that one up," Shudak said. "I didn't kick it far enough." Nebraska got nothing from that break, however, when Chris Drennan missed a 53-yard field-goal try.

BUFFS OR HUSKERS. A sampling of Cyclones seems to favor Colorado over Nebraska in Saturday's key game at Boulder. "I think Colorado's offense is a little better than Nebraska's," Iowa State running back Blaise Bryant said. Bryant was limited to 66 yards Nebraska's Kent Wells bulldogs ISU's very first when the Cyclones lost to Colorado, 52-17, and he managed 89 against the Huskers. He has 994 yards this season.

"I'll pick Colorado in a close one," said cornerback Marcus Robertson. "It's probably going to be a real scoring battle," said defensive end Matt Rehberg. "They've both got big-play potential." Said flanker John Glotfelty: "The defenses of both teams are good ones. But I'd have to give the edge to Colorado's offense." BACK AGAIN. After first deciding to give up football rather than relinquish his academic scholarship, sophomore free safety Matt Goodwin rejoined the Cyclones last week and play made the trip to Nebraska.

Goodwin said he and his mother have arranged to repay his $1,200 in financial aid. As a walk-on without a football scholarship, he can't receive aid from other sources without counting on the 95-man roster limit, and the Cyclones have no openings. "I found I missed football a lot," said Goodwin, who dropped off the team before the Kansas game a few weeks ago. "I talked to my mom, and she said that right now we're in a position to do that pay the money back if I wanted to play. "The coaches say they'll put me on scholarship next fall, and in the long run I'll be better off.

The scholarship I had didn't cover books and stuff." By BUCK TURNBULL Register Staff Writer LINCOLN, NEB. Iowa State's defensive problems against potent Nebraska were compounded on the first play of the game Saturday when Don Edwards went out with a sprained ankle. Edwards is the team's top tackier among the down linemen. Two plays after he was helped from the field, Nebraska quarterback Gerry Gdowski began his four-touchdown spree with a 74-yard run. "Here I was, worrying about going against all those 275-pound Nebraska guys' said Edwards, a 230-pound senior, "and then I get hurt because somebody falls on my leg when I wasn't expecting it." Edwards said the ankle was swol-: after the game, and the injury Cornhusker quarterback.

Sophomore Leodis Flowers filled in for Clark and netted 118 yards. UNPLANNED PUNT. With the score tied, 7-7, early in the game, Iowa State's Jeff Shudak was set to attempt a 58-yard field goal. Instead, in what appeared to be some more Cyclone trickery in the kicking game, holder Judge Johnston took the snap and got off a low punt that was blocked. Nebraska recovered on Iowa State's 38-yard line and soon had a 14-7 lead.

"That was my fault," Johnston said. "It was supposed to be a field-goal try, but I bobbled the snap from center." The Cyclones also failed with an Lld.u.jlJI..j(B.lu)!lIiffiiiif.
