1 11 The Des Moines Register ST OBITUARIES Monday, August 23, 2004 Page 5A LEVI NELSON SPOHNHEIMER Ames Levi Nelson Spohnheimer, M.D. of Ames died in the early morning of August 15, 2004 at his home. Levi, 87 years young, was born to Edgar and Pauline (Hohl) Spohnheimer on a farmstead near Donnellson Lee County, lowa. He attended one-room country school before graduating from Donnellson High School in 1933 and later exercised skills in business, farming, and service to work his way through college, experiences that shaped his life-long appreciation of higher education and values of self-reliance, discipline and economy. After receiving his Agronomy degree from lowa State College in 1942, he served in the Army Signal Corps and was selected for the Army Specialized Training Program.

On June 28, 1946 Levi married Maxene Mary Bentzinger, a music teacher, whom he had known from childhood; tc together they raised two sons and two daughters and celebrated 52 years of marriage. His early life goal of a medical educationsparked by the senseless death of a classmate from a fatal blood infection of a heel blister, shortly before the discovery of penicillin-was realized in 1948 with his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of lowa. Levi practiced medicine for over 40 years, from internship in Duluth, Minnesota to private practice in Donnellson, lowa City, and Leon, interrupted by service as an Air Force Flight Surgeon stationed in Idaho and Guam during the Korean Conflict. His memories of private practice encompassed two dollar office visits, experiences with humanity "of all stripes and colors," late-night house calls and the joys of presiding over the entry of 500 babies into this world "mostly by staying out of the way." Later, he was an industrial physician for Ames Laboratory at ISU and mingled with the younger crowd as a physician for the University of lowa Student Health Service. After 'retirement' he traveled to Indian reservations to practice medicine (Project USA), volunteered for the AARP (55-Alive elder driver training) and IRS (senior citizen tax preparer), participated in the Golden Kiwanis Club and spent hours at the public library, researching and reading all manner of publications.

L.N. Spohnheimer was a generous supporter of the of I Medical School, ISU programs including the replica Atanasoft-Berry Computer and Agronomy scholarships, and the Collegiate United Methodist Church in Ames, where he enjoyed community and companionship. Levi was preceded in death by Maxene, his wife for 52 years. His vibrant contributions to life will be sorely missed by friends, colleagues, and 30-some family members, including brother Victor Spohnheimer and wife lola, and sister-in-law Alverda Blankenburg of Donnellson. Levi is also survived by four children; Nelson and Kathy Spohnheimer of Auburn, Washington; Alan and Gina Spohnheimer of Ellsworth; Cheryl and Keith Krewer of Cedar Rapids; Deb Spohnheimer and Milton Garay of New York City.

His nine beloved grandchildren are Stephanie and Kimberly of Auburn, Washington; Sara and husband Thong Dy of Randall; Wayne and wife Michelle of Marshalltown; Kent of Ames; Anna, Matthew, and Rebecca of Cedar Rapids; and Christopher of New York City. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, September 5 at Collegiate United Methodist Church in Ames. A time for visitation will be held at the church on Saturday, September 4 starting at 7 p.m. Adams Funeral Home of Ames is in charge of arrangements.

SARA ANN Des Moines Sara Ann Jacobson, 66, died Friday August 20, 2004 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines of complications diabetes and renal failure. Sara was the daughter of Claude B. and Flossie B. McKim, and was born in Kansas City, Missouri, but was raised and lived in the Des Moines area all her life. She was married to Edward C.

Jacobson in 1955. She spent the last four and a half years at Fleur Heights Care Center in Des Moines, where she had many friends and enjoyed Bingo and watching the birds. She is survived by three daughters, Lori Lister (Dale) of Phoenix, Arizona, Peggy Waskel (Joe) of Phoenix, Arizona and Melissa Clark (Troy) of Altoona, lowa. She also leaves behind nine grandchildren and six great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband and two infant children.

Sara made a lot of people laugh, was loved by many, and will be missed by all. Interment will be at Chapel Hill Gardens Cemetery. MERLEHAY at Chapel Hill MARCELENE "MARCIE" CONNER Indianola Marcelene Mae Conner, 84, died Saturday, August 21, 2004, at Westview Care Center in Indianola. Funeral services will be held at Overton Funeral Home at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, August 24.

Visitation will be held at Overton Funeral Home on Monday, August 23 from 4 to 8 p.m. with family present from 6 to 8 p.m. to greet friends. Burial will be at the 1.0.0.F. Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Indianola.

Marcelene Mae Patterson, only child of Frank C. and Berdella Clark Patterson, was born on a farm near Chariton in Lucas County, lowa on May 6, 1920. She attended Amity Country School and graduated from Chariton High School, continuing her education at lowa State Teachers College. She taught school at Burlington, Norwood and Humeston, lowa. On October 8, 1942 Marcie married Robert Keith Conner of the U.S.

Navy in a quiet ceremony at the Baptist Church in Russell, lowa. After the wedding Bob returned to the Great Lakes Naval Base and Marcie finished the school year in Humeston. They were reunited in May in Oakland, California where they spent several months until Bob was shipped out for active duty in the South Pacific. Marcie returned to lowa and was employed with the Ration Board in Indianola. After the war, Bob and Marcie established their home in Indianola.

Their daughter, Dianna Lea Conner, was born on April 28, 1946. The family spent two years on their farm near Chariton, but Indianola has otherwise been their home. Church music was Marcie's calling. She served as a church pianist for many revival meetings and Sunday School Conventions in the area. She served as an organist for Overton Funeral Home for 50 years.

She served as a pianist and organist for Brown's Chapel and Chapel of Faith. Marcie also worked in the personnel and psychology office of Simpson College. The Conners opened their home to many college students who remained their dear friends for many years. Marcie was a member of the First United Methodist Church and Kensington Circle of Indianola. She is survived by her husband, Bob of Indianola; one daughter, Dee Gee and husband David Blair of Cherokee, IA; and three granddaughters, Jennifer Lea Blair, Elizabeth Eva Blair and Kathleen Conner Blair; brother-in-law, Chuck Maguire of Des Moines; one nephew, Paul Maguire and his wife Penny of Sun City, AZ; one niece, Deborah and her husband James Stanton of Clear Lake; three great-nephews, Mark Stanton, Todd and Jerrod Maguire; a great-niece, Melissa and husband Luke Cookman; great-great-nephew, Beck Maguire; great-great-niece, Makenna Stanton; and many special cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents and sister-in-law, Mary Lu Maguire. Memorials may be directed to First United Methodist Church or Chapel of Faith in Indianola. ALICE ROSE (MOECKLY) SPRINGER West Des Moines Alice R. Springer, 76, peacefully passed away Sunday, August 22, 2004 at Kavanagh House on 56th Street. Memorial services will be 10 a.m.

Tuesday at St. Timothy's Episcopal Church with a gathering to follow, then burial at Resthaven Cemetery. Alice was born in Petersburg, MN and lived most of her adult life in West Des Moines. She was a homemaker, a volunteer for West Des Moines Human Services, a member and past president of West Des Moines Women's Club, past president of Fair Meadows PTA, past president of Valley Band Boosters and a member of St. Timothy's Episcopal Church.

Alice is survived by her daughter, Judi (Ted) Lodden West Des Moines; a son, Stephen A. Moeckly of Sioux Falls, SD; mother, Helen Eisenhower of Estherville; sister, Gladys Sabin of Estherville; four stepsons, John (Julie) Springer, Jr. of West Des Moines, James (Christine) Springer of Phoenix, AZ, Charles (Karen) Springer of Garner, IA, and W. Blair (Denise) Springer of West Des Moines; three stepdaughters, Stephanie Arent of Omaha, NE, Chris Tisch of Tucson, AZ, and Tracy Lehman of St. Louis, MO; two grandchildren, Grant and Nolan Lodden; and numerous stepgrandchildren and great-stepgrandchildren.

Joe, son of Arthur and Dorothy Curry Jones, was born July 24, 1944 in Des Moines.

He grew up and attended school in Des Moines. He was a truck driver and drove for Hyman Freight 25 years and also for Yellow Freight five years. He retired in 2002. He had been a member of the teamsters for 38 years. Joe had lived the past 32 years on his farm near New Virginia.

He was united in marriage to Bobby Jean Bobenhouse in February of 1995 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Joe loved his time on his farm. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time outdoors with his family. Joe was a Christian and enjoyed living near the Broadhorn Church. Joe was preceded in death by his parents and his son, Denny.

He married Kay Barnts of Alburnett on September 5, 1965. Dean has raised purebred Duroc and Finnish Edge hogs for 39 years. Dean was employed by Oscar Mayer, Genetics Unlimited and later his own company, Christian Genetic Services. Mary Ruth Simmons, daughter of Burton Duncan and Fannie M. (Patton) Duncan Danforth entered this life in Keytesville, Missouri on May 23, 1916 and was called home to be with her Savior on August 21, 2004. She was educated in the Des Moines Public Schools, graduating from North High School and the American Institute of Business. At a very early age she was united with St.

Paul A.M.E. Church under the leadership of Rev. W.H. Griffin. She attended Sunday School at St.

Paul and graduated from the Normal School under the late renowned Atty. S. Joe Brown. On March 21, 1939, she was united in holy matrimony to Charles "Jap" Simmons, Jr. by Rev.

H.C. Boyd. They shared 51 years of marriage together. Mary Ruth had been a most faithful and dedicated worker in her church until the dreaded disease of Alzheimer's robbed her of self. She had been a member and officer of the Lady Usher Board for approximately 60 years.

She had been a member of the Gospel Choir, and became one of the charter members of the celebrated and illustrious Richard Allen Chorus under the direction of the late gifted, Lauretta V. Reeves. She also served as one of the supervisors of the St. Paul Chancel Young Adult Choir that traveled throughout the Midwest. Mary Ruth was a member of the William Sampson Brooks Missionary Society; she served as a long-time president of the Monogram Club (a trustee support Auxiliary), the Church Mortgage Liquidation Committee, the Building Fund Committee, and a member of the Trustee Board.

She chaired the wonderful 103rd Anniversary of St. Paul, and served on the committee of the 125th Anniversary. She chaired the Ebony Magazine Drive for St. Paul for many years, helped organize many Annual Conference sessions, and also had served as Church Clerk and Secretary under the pastorate of Rev. E.P.

Williams and Dr. Henderson Davis. She served faithfully on the Church Dining Room Committee and Coordinator of the Church's ministry in feeding the homeless at the United Church's shelter for many years. Working as a Seed Analyst, she retired from the lowa Department of Agriculture after 28 years of service. Prior to that she worked in the Business Office of Mercy Hospital and as a bookkeeper for the United Methodist Church of lowa.

She was a Past Grand Daughter Ruler and member of Rose Temple an auxiliary of Hawkeye Elks Lodge of the IBPOEW; a member of the Past Grand Club and an Officer of the Antler Guard. She served as Loyal Daughter Ruler of Rose Council of Iowa as well as District Deputy for the state of lowa. In the early 1960's she served as Director of the Ebbonettes Girl's Club at the Willkie House Community Center. Additionally, she was a member of the Des Moines Affiliate of the National Black Child Development Institute. After her retirement she did volunteer work for Hospice of Central Iowa for twelve years.

Her favorite past times were playing with her several bridge and canasta clubs, enjoying a good baseball or basketball game, really enjoying the Chicago Cubs, reading magazines or enjoying a good book. Her greatest enjoyment, however, was spending special time with her family. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles her father, Burton Duncan; her mother, Fannie Patton Danforth; and her stepfather, John M. Danforth, Sr. She was also preceded by brothers, Joseph, Charles and John Danforth, and sisters, Charlene (Danforth) Griffin, June (Danforth) Lee, Inez White and Carrie Bumpus.

She leaves to cherish her memories, a devoted "chosen" daughter, Lynda Walker-Webster of Des Moines and a stepdaughter, Betty Kelly of Chicago. Also remaining are a sister, Dorothy (Danforth) Robinson of Darby, Pennsylvania and a very dedicated brother, Paul W. Danforth of Des Moines; a cherished granddaughter, Amandalynn Webster of Des Moines; and a loyal nephew, Dr. Wendell C. Danforth (Susan) and daughters, Sierra and Victoria of Edina, Minnesota.

Also surviving are half-brothers and sisters, Ronald Duncan, Satira (Duncan) Burrell, Sandra (Duncan) Dant and Louise Duncan, all of Des Moines; and a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives. While blessed with a beautiful bouquet of friends and acquaintances in her church and the community, she leaves three very loyal, long-time and special friends, Martha Parkey, Vera Spencer and Dana Blaskey. Church. Memorial contributions may be made to the scholarship fund of The National Black Child Development Institute-Des Moines Affiliate. ALBERT JOSEPH SALAZAR, SR. West Des Moines Albert J. Salazar, 69, went home to our Lord Jesus Christ on Saturday, August 21, 2004.

During his passing he was surrounded by his loving family at home. A funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Church followed by a military honor burial at Resthaven Cemetery. Albert was born February 4, 1935 in Valley Junction to Manuel and Josephine (Ramos) Salazar. He graduated from Valley High School in 1954, and proudly served in the U.S.

Army Military Police Corps from 1954 to 1957. He married his loving wife, Frances Wanatee on July 3, 1959. Albert retired five years ago. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, VFW and American Legion. Albert enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, family events, listening to music and outdoor activities.

Albert is survived by his wife, Frances; four sons, John (Pam) Salazar and Albert (Kimberly) Salazar, Jr. of West Des Moines, Paul (Shawn) Salazar of Des Moines and Darrell (Emily) Salazar of Cincinnati, OH; three daughters, Anita (Rich) Pinkerton, Jean (Darrin) Salazar Garcia and Marlena (Joseph) Perez, all of West Des Moines; eleven grandchildern; a greatgrandson; and a sister, Mary Jo Garcia of Des Moines. McLaren's Chapel Dignity at Resthaven Cemetery PHILLIP JUROVICH Des Moines Des Moines Phillip Jurovich, 65, died Thursday, August 19, 2004 at home. Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, August 25 at Hamilton's Funeral Home, with burial at Berwick Cemetery. Phillip served in the U.S. Navy.

He retired from the Des Moines Fire Department in 2003 after 33 years of service. He was a member of the Greek Orthodox Church, the Croatian Lodge and VFW Post 9662. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, golfing and gardening. He was very proud of his Serbian heritage. He is survived by his daughter, Tammy Jurovich-Hofbauer of Berwick; his sons, Craig and Mike of California and Kenny of Des Moines; grandchildren, Annika, Nick, Giselle, Collin, Caleb, Seth, Alison, Autumn and Steven; and two sisters, Susan Nugteren of Des Moines and Anna Kingery of Ankeny.

She is survived by her son, Tom Clark of Minneapolis, MN; daughter, Patricia Kiel of Clive, Iowa; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Ankeny Funeral Home Dignity and Crematory KEVIN OTIS TICE Des Moines Kevin Otis Tice, 47, left this world on August 20, 2004 at his home. Al-Qaida recruiting Hondurans, officials say Some were reportedly offered money to carry out attacks on embassies; others were approached on ideological grounds. By FREDDY CUEVAS ASSOCIATED PRESS Tegucigalpa, Honduras Honduras tightened security at foreign embassies and declared a national terror alert after receiving information that al-Qaida was trying to recruit Hondurans to attack embassies of the United States, Britain, Spain and El Salvador, a government official said Sunday. The heightened security was implemented three days ago after Honduras' intelligence services received reports of a plan allegedly targeting those countries' embassies here and abroad, Security Minister Oscar Alvarez said. "We are facing a state of preventative national alert, because our intelligence services report that al-Qaida foreigners have made offers for Hondurans to carry out sabotage both here and abroad," Alvarez said at a news conference. Some Hondurans reportedly were offered money to carry out attacks, while others were approached on ideological grounds.

Honduras has a tiny Islamic community. "We believe that there are Hondurans who could accept these offers, some for money, and others because they believe in Islam," Alvarez said. "Our best agents are investigating the case and working out a strategy to prevent international terrorists from using Honduras as a base for training terrorists." The purported al-Qaida plot was directly linked to the war in Iraq, which is why it targeted the United States, Britain and El Salvador, Alvarez said. However, it was unclear why Spain was targeted. Madrid pulled its troops out of Iraq earlier this year.

Honduras withdrew its 370 soldiers in April. "Starting three days ago, we have redoubled security measures at the embassies of those nations involved in Iraq. This situation will continue for the foreseeable future," Alvarez said. Train burned in protest of attack on opposition ASSOCIATED PRESS Dhaka, Bangladesh An angry mob set fire to a passenger train and protesters clashed with police across Bangladesh on Sunday, leaving dozens of people injured, as violence spread a day after a grenade attack on an opposition rally killed 19 people and wounded hundreds. The Subarna Express train was attacked as it was entering a station in the town of Bhairab, 50 miles east of its destination of Dhaka, the capital, said a railway spokesman.

Clashes also were reported in six other towns in southern Bangladesh. More than 200 protesters were arrested in Chittagong, 140 miles southeast of Dhaka, according to the private station NIV.
