How can a simple piece of paper affect your health? Most of the time, when you're at the doctor's office, you don't feel well. So it's easy to forget vital information. In fact, it's natural. Each year, there are over 800 million doctor visits in the United States. Studies show that patients remember less than 30 percent of the information that's given to But studies also show that better communication with doctors can result in more positive outcomes.

So next time you see your doctor, get the most out of your visit and your health care dollar. Keep a notebook of your personal health records, and share it with your doctor. Make a list of symptoms and questions, and bring it with you to your doctor's visit to remind you to talk about certain things. When it comes to your treatments and doctor's instructions, take notes to help you remember important information. And keep a record of your medications, both prescription and over-the-counter.

Because sometimes the road to good health begins with a simple piece of paper. Simple Steps Can Make a Difference I. Ask questions until you understand. This will ensure you're making informed decisions about your own health. 2.

Be honest with your doctor. Don't hold back any concerns or health information. Your doctor needs to have complete information to give you the best care. 3. Bring someone with you to the doctor's office.
