The whole game was pretty much like that. THE STARTING pitchers were Reps. Wheeler and Corbett. Both got tired, then came back when their 'Sides got into trouble. Wheeler, by the way, is a mighty fancy pitcher.

In the five innings he worker the Republicans got only two runs. But the 5,000 spectators picked Rep. Teague (D-Tex) as their hero. He played second base, turned four sparkling plays, and got a double that drove in three runs, And he did this even though he wears a boot that covers an arti ficial lost his own on Anzio beachhead. Rep. Abernethy (D-Miss.) could have had a home run, too, but he ran out of wind at third base, and promptly bivouacked. All Schacht, the baseball comedian, handled the microphone job. His best crack came in an inning which say the Democrats make five runs. "If the Democrats get that sixth run." said Schacht, "President Tru man will try for the extra point." Two cars conceded a chance to break the qualification record set by the late Ralph Hepburn were among those expected to go today. Duke Nalon of Los Angeles was reported ready in a sister car to the Novi Grooved Piston Special in which Hepburn was killed last Sunday, and Chet Miller was expected to go out in Don Lee's German Merceres.

Those who qualify today will line up in order of their speeds, behind the ten which qualified last week-end. They cannot movo ahead of earlier qualifiers, even if their times are faster, unless some of the earlier cars are crowded out by faster cars. Only the 33 fastest may start in the race. Air Force Starts Work Toward 70-Group Status WASHINGTON, May The air force began building toward a record peacetime strength By Associated Press It's a big jump from the bottom of the heap to the first division, but the Pittsburgh Pirates are trying to prove that, it can be done. Of course, the season has a long way to run and the Pirates may snag when they run into the usual heavy mid-season doubter headers, but Manager Billy Meyer's crew is in third place today, pressing the St. Louis Cardinals for the lead. Due to postponements, Meyer has been able to give his veteran pitchers such as Rip Sewell, Elmer Riddle and Fritz Ostermueller plenty of rest and the oldtimers have come through with nine of the Pirates 15 victories. Very few thought that the Pirates, who finished the 1947 season in a seventh place tie with the Philadelphia Phillies, would be among the upper brackets this year.

One who did however, is Branch president of the Brooklyn Dodgers. "THE PIRATES finish in (he first division," Rickey said in spring training. The Deacon didn't say exactly where he thought his Dodgers would place and perhaps as well. Rickey isn't reminding people of his prediction and pointing out how the Pirates are living up to it because his Dodgers, defending National League champions, are in seventh place and threatening to drop lower. The Pirates paid their first visit to Ebbets Field, home of the yesterday, and shot up the place, S-4, to hand the Brooks their sixth straight loss.

Frankie Gustine and Max West were the big guns in the Pirate bombardment, but former Dodgers Ostermueller, Hal Gregg and Dixie Walker also played important parts. The victory enabled the Pirates to pull to within four percentage points of the second place New and Aaron Robinson, beat the New York Yankees, 3-0. Wight held the Yanks to three singles while Robinson drove in one run and scored another. The win was the last place Sox's fifth in 24 games. In a night game at St.

Louis the Browns eked put a 4-3 victory over the Washington Senators to hold fifth place, five percentage points behind the Tigers. A scheduled night game between the Cincinnati Reds and the Phillies in Philadelphia was postponed because of rain. LEGAL NOTICES NOTICE OF CLAIM DATE Estate of GUI Edgar also known as James G. Because lots of elderly Murphysboro men of today will recall this. the day when Jesse died under the old sycamore tree at: the northeast corner of Court Square. There came one day, to the heart of our fair little city (except that the streets were not paved), one bewhiskered gent under a ten- gallon hat on the driver's seat of a black hack behind two rrfules.

And, lo! when he pulled up in the shade of the tree he revealed that he had this same Jesse with him. Yes, sir, the living image of the bandit bold, showing where the bullet from a traitorous partner's pistol laid him low. DID THE kids and old men pile in to see Jesse? They did. NEW SENATOR Meat Strike Is Over; Rail Dispute Unsettled By the Associated Press The nationwide meat strike is over against all but one of the four major packers. But prospects for seltling the railroad dispute have dimmed. The 10-weeks old strike of the CIO United Packinghouse Workers Union ended yesterday against Swift, Armour and Cudahy when the union accepted the nine cents an hour wage increase originally offered by the company. The workers had struck for 29 cents. The strike, which saw some violence, will continue at seven Wilson plants which normally employ about 8,000 persons.
