2:44. A 18,960. White Sox place King on 15-day disabled list CHICAGO The Chicago White Sox placed pitcher Eric King on the 15-day disabled list Monday with a sore right shoulder. He will be replaced by Adam Peterson, who is being called up from the Sox's Vancouver affiliate, said team spokesman Chuck Adams. Peterson, who is scheduled to start today against Cleveland, was 8-2 at Vancouver with an ERA of 2.38, Adams said.

League Leaders AMERICAN LEAGUE Through Sunday' games Bated on 180 It Bat. Fernandez, Cardinals close to deal The Associated Press PARIS Vive la jeunesse. In English, it means "long live youth." In Paris, it was the theme of a history-making French Open that produced a pair of 17-year-old champions. Michael Chang of the United States and Arantxa Sanchez of Spain each achieved two landmarks in winning the men's and women's titles at Stade Roland Garros. At 17 years and 3V2 months, Chang is the youngest male player ever to win one of the four Grand Slam tennis championships.

He's also the first American to win on the slow red clay since Tony Tra-bert in 1955. Sanchez, 17 years and five months, is the youngest woman to win the French Open, as well as the first Spanish woman to capture a Grand Slam singles title. Neither Chang nor Sanchez will be considered favorites at Wimbledon, which begins in two weeks, because they lack a big serve and experience on grass courts. But their victories in Paris proved that tennis has been taken over by a new generation. "It's the changing of the guard," Philippe Chatrier, the president of the International Tennis Federation, said Monday at a news conference.

"The fact we've had two 17-year-old winners is unique for Roland Garros and the Grand Slam. "These two victories show that tennis is far from stagnant as everybody has been saying. A page has been turned and the young are but said he was more realistic. "I knew that was early," Fernandez said. "I didn't expect to go (on the first day) at all.

I expected to go later." Fernandez, who is noted for his defense, hit .231 with eight home runs and 39 RBI his senior season. He hit .233 (95-for-408) in three years at Florida. Fernandez hit .330 in one season at Palm Beach Community College. "I have to hit for average a little more," Fernandez said. "The main reason I was drafted was for my defensive skills.

But I need to improve there, too. Right now that's my strong point." The Baltimore Orioles reportedly are upset with the way LSU worked Ben McDonald in the College World Series. McDonald, who was the first pick overall by the more years. A team with three 13-year-olds and two 14-year-olds can't be expected to compete with teams such as Palm Beach Post 12, which went to the American Legion World Series last year. But Rarrieck said victories mean little at this stage.

"These boys are all good ballplayers, and they're all still young," Rarrieck said. "I was hoping to win maybe 10 of the 40 games this year. I'll be happy with that. Really all we're here for is to learn baseball." Members of the Boca Raton teams were picked by a tryout, with the coaches of both teams choosing who would play for the Blues and who would play for the Reds. "We had a try out and talked some of the kids just one step below 'A' level into playing for the Red team," Hutch said.

"The Boca Raton area, like just about every other area, has a lot of kids who can play. Pitching By TOM D'ANGELO Palm Beach Post Staff Writer Jupiter's Jose Fernandez said he expects to sign a major league contract with the St. Louis Cardinals by Wednesday. Fernandez, who played at the University of Florida, was selected in the 14th round of last week's free-agent draft. "I was a little nervous Fernandez about the (negotiations), but it's gone pretty smooth," Fernandez said.

"We've discussed where I'd be sent and right now we're negotiating the contract." Fernandez said the contract 1 ft ,1 activated; eout The Associated Press CHICAGO The Chicago Cubs activated outfielder Andre Dawson Monday and placed first baseman Mark Grace on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to June 5. Dawson was placed on the disabled list May 9 because of an injured right knee and two days later had arthroscopic surgery to repair cartilage. Dawson, the National League's Most Valuable Player in 1987, is expected to start today in the first of a three-game series at New York against the Mets. At the time of his injury, Dawson was batting .305 with five home runs and 19 RBI. Grace has been out of the lineup since suffering a separation of his right shoulder June 4 at St.

Louis when he was involved in a melee after Cardinal pitcher Frank Di-Pino brushed him back. That resulted in an emptying of the benches and a free-for-all during which Grace injured his shoulder. "It bothered him trying to swing at balls off the tee," Zimmer said. "There's no way he can swing at real pitches or play." Grace is batting .316 with two homers and 26 RBI. Bookmaker linked to Rose willing to give interview CINCINNATI Ronald Pe-t ters, identified as a bookmaker for Pete Rose, said he has renewed his offer of an interview without condi-' tions to lawyers for the Cincinnati Reds manager.

I In a telephone interview, Peters told The Associated Press that he's still willing to submit to an interview with Rose's lawyers, who are preparing for a meeting June 26 in New York with baseball Commissioner A. Bartlett Giamatti. "My attorneys contacted them today and told them we're still available, for any meeting with no provisions asked," Peters said. Reuven J. Katz, one of Rose's lawyers had no comment.

"We're not going to discuss it," Katz said, Peters is one of the key figures in the investigation of Rose's gam-sbling. An assistant U.S. attorney has said Peters told authorities that he took perhaps in excess of $1 million in bets on behalf of Rose over a two-year period. Rose could be suspended for one year if he's found to have bet on i baseball games. Betting on Reds' games could bring a lifetime ban.

I Rose also is under investigation by a federal grand jury in Cincin-i nati looking into his taxes. Lawyers for the Reds manager had scheduled an interview with Peters for last weekend as part of their preparation for the hearing before Giamatti. But they called it off Thursday, complaining of con- ditions established for the inter- view. One of the main sticking points I was a stipulation by Peters' lawyers that Rose pay him $25,000 if any of the information obtained during the interview is given to reporters by Rose's lawyers. The dispute led to an exchange of words between lawyers on both sides Thursday.

One day later, Pe-ters' lawyers said they had offered to drop the conditions. Peters said that he doesn't think Rose's lawyers are sincere in their objections. i "They don't want to talk to me," Peters said. "They know what I've got to say. They've got my sworn testimony from baseball.

"All. they want to do is act like they want to talk, and when it comes to the end (after the hearing with Giamatti) scream that it's unjust that they were not capable of talking to me, saying it would be my fault, when in fact we've given them every opportunity in the i world to talk to me." Scudder sent down; Reds call up Snider CINCINNATI Cincinnati Reds pitcher Scott Scudder has been optioned to Nashville, and outfielder Van Snider has been called up from the AAA farm team, the Reds announced Monday. Scudder was 0-1 in two appear-; ances, against San Francisco and Los Angeles. I Padres' Gwynn named NL Player of the Week NEW YORK Tony Gwynn of the San Diego Padres had 16 hits in 31 at-bats June 5-ll ana was named National League Player of the Week, the league announced Monday. Gwynn had six multi-hit games, including a four-hit game against Houston on June 5.

The San Diego outfielder, batting .356 for the season, drove in five runs last week and scored four. Other players considered were Lloyd McClendon and Dwight Smith of the Chicago Cubs, Cincinnati's Barry Larkin, Pedro Guerrero of the St. Louis Cardinals and Los Angeles' Willie Randolph. Grac taking power." The youth movement also emerged in the juniors competition, where Jennifer Capriati of Lauderhill, won the girls' title at the age of 13Vi. Chatrier recalled that many people had said the tournament would suffer from the absence of veteran stars John McEnroe, Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert.

"People said it would be a dull tournament, but they knew they were wrong by noon on the first day," Chatrier said. "The fact that we have new faces shows that thinking didn't count for anything." In a year when the French are celebrating the 200th anniversary of their revolution, the upsets at the French Open were nothing short of revolutionary. Neither Chang nor Sanchez had been expected to get beyond the first few rounds. Chang, a promising but unproven talent who has played in the shadow of flashy 19-year-old Andre Agassi, was seeded 15th. Sanchez was seeded seventh, but was not considered a serious threat to defending champion Steffi Graf or second-seeded Gabriela Sa-batini.

Sanchez received little attention while advancing to the final. Most of the stories were about Graf and Monica Seles, a 15-year-old Yugoslavian who trains in Braden-ton and reached the semifinals before losing to Graf. Orioles in the draft, threw 162 pitches in his first Series outing a 5-2 loss to Miami. Three nights later he pitched to the last two batters, after warming up three times, to save a game against the Hurricanes. Two days later McDonald started and allowed 11 runs in 3Va innings as LSU was eliminated from the tournament.

McDonald allowed 27 runs in his last 23 innings at LSU and the Orioles, who earlier this year thought the 6-foot-7 right-hander might be ready to pitch in Baltimore, have abandoned that plan. Two Orioles executives have said that once McDonald is signed he will not pitch for a month. He will be sent to Class AA and held to an 80-pitch limit for several starts. They said McDonald will not be allowed to pitch without at least four days rest between starts. for future This gives them that opportunity, plus gives them experience against better competition." The success of the experiment can't be determined immediately.

It remains to be seen how much the experience will help younger players. "They won't find out the value of it until a couple of years have passed," Post 12 coach Craig Gero said. "It's good experience, though." Lake Worth Post 47 got grand slams last week from catcher Jamie LoCastro and shortstop Ryan Hawblitzel. LoCastro's homer came in Post 47's 12-5 victory over Fort Pierce Post 40A in the second game of a doubleheader. Hawblitzel, who leads the area with five home runs, hit his grand slam Thursday in a 12-5 win over Palm Beach Post 12.

Hawblitzel has homered in three of Lake Worth's last four games. Boynton Beach Post 164 at Palm Beach Post 12, 7 p.m. Today's games Lake Worth Post 47 at Boca Raton Post 277 (Blue), 7 p.m. Fort Pierce Post 40A at Jupiter Post 271. 7 p.m.

He will report to the Cardinals' Class A affiliate at Hamilton, Ontario, in the New York-Penn League. Fernandez's father Emilio has assisted in the negotiations.

"They pretty much said the starting job was mine to lose at Hamilton," Fernandez said. "They said if I showed I don't belong there they'll move me out of there." Fernandez said he was surprised he was selected on the first day of the draft, which lasted three days and 88 rounds. He had heard reports he would be drafted between the seventh and 10th rounds, next year, but the object now is to let more kids play." While the Boca Raton (Red) team acts a junior varsity team for the Boca Raton (Blue) team, the Fort Pierce team isn't affiliated with the Fort Pierce A team. Instead, Fort Pierce coach Les Rarrieck said his team (average age just over 15) will play this year against competition and use the experience to play at the level next year. "We're looking toward next year and the year after," Rarrieck said.

"We're planning on keeping this team together next year. We just want them to gain experience and take them up to the next level as a full team." Boca Raton Post 277 and Fort Pierce Post 40 each established junior teams this year which consist of players under 18 who are "one step below regular Legion level." At the same time, Boca Raton and Fort Pierce field squads made up mostly of experienced 17- and 18-year-olds. The junior teams, Boca Raton Post 277 (Red) (4-10) and Fort Pierce Post 40B (3-12), play against competition and have taken their lumps. Post 277 (Red) coach Mike Hutch, who also coaches Broward Community College, said his team is willing to sacrifice wins now for experience against better teams.
